Customer Reviews

Hamilton 6-Shelf Bookcase in Walnut is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 184.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very attractive, but irritating to assemble. An attractive, sturdy bookcase. Shelves won't sag like most bookcases, when loaded with heavy books. Delivered on-time. Several Negatives: the package weighs #114. Very heavy pieces are awkward for 1 person to assemble, making it take hours. Directions are very small drawings, lacking key details, so need trial and error. The back panel consists of thin & thick boards that you slide down a track & for me, wouldn't stay in place without generous glue & shifting the bookcase from R-side-down to L-side down. Screws need to be re-tightened each time you shift the piece. Great final result, but you need lots of time to assemble.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointing I got this item on sale, and the materials are what I had hoped for: mostly solid wood, with very little particle board. It was quite difficult to assemble, though. The selves were too short and we had to buy additional hardware to make them work. The finish scratched very easily, so we had to buy stain to cover the scratches. Once assembled, it looked ok, but we had to sink some wood screws to make it steady. If this had been full price I would have sent it back, but for the sale price it was an ok value, as all I got were the materials and pattern.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Overpriced I was very disappointed in this bookcase, I have assembled 5 bookcases in my home over the past few yrs and this one, not only was missing pg 2 of instructions, it had to be taken apart 2X's in order to make the top slide on. Apart from that the materials used were poor quality, the inside of bookcase was flat pressboard without a wood finish. The exterior has a rough finish, unlike the picture on line. Was NOT worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good looking bookcase for great price This is the third Hamilton bookcase I have purchased. It is sturdy and attractive. The assembly of the bookcase was different that the previous 2 bookcases so the holes were not in the correct positions and some of the pieces did not line up. I had to take apart the bookcase an realign everything - still had to drill some holes to get the top piece aligned. So while it eventually turned out okay, could be frustrating to assemble

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Anticipate cleaning problems Ordered two of these bookshelves for my new library. They look nice, but unfortunately when assembled there is a 1/2 inch gap between the bottom shelf and the bottom board. Once the bookshelves are filled they will not be moved and this gap will be a definite cleaning issue. I am not happy with it and if they weren't already assembled they would be returned.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not as it appeared Just assembled the "honey oak" model. Assembly was easy, quick. Overall quality is good - much better than particle board. However, don't think that you are getting oak veneer or even oak-like. The color is much redder than I would have expected for a honey oak color and, although the picture on the web makes the grain appear to be large and open, like oak, the actual wood is your typical imported appearance. I was hoping to match some existing oak finish in the room. Fortunately, the bookcase will be far enough from it, and in a corner where it won't be so obvious. Still, a good value for the money. Would be nice if you could request a small sample of the actual wood with the finish on it, before purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saving our Books! We moved to an old home over a year ago and we had a few hundred books and no place to store them. They have been on the floor in stacks. Purchasing the wide tall Hamilton Bookcase saved our books. They were beginning to show some mildew damage. After setting up the bookcase we were able store many of our more current books, then clean and decorate the built in bookshelf beside the fireplace where we keep Hemingway and Louis Lamoure volumes. Our antique glass front law bookshelf holds all the Classics from Dickens to Faulkner. We have only one small box of books that will go in our bedroom once we locate an oak two shelf bookcase for under the window!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sign of the Time I bought two of these bookcases, which show the typical type of furniture we have become used to: pre-assesmbled, looks good and moderately priced. In general I am pleased with the product as it satisfy my needs: Hold my books without having the shelves sag under the weight as the shelves are made of wood as well as the side panels. I was also amused as to how the back is formed by use of structural ribs and thin compressed wood panels. A particular aspect of this product is that the oak color looks redish rather that blond. The assembly was generally easy, but it will facilitate a second person to speed the process. Parts are well labeled. The product was delivered in good condition as the wood components are individually wrapped and enough cushion is provided to avoid scratches and broken parts.
