After purchasing this for an entry area, it arrived packaged beautifully and was easily assembled. My only fault with the design is the back panel. It comes in two pieces with a taped vertical seam down the middle. I purchased the cherry finish, so it was barely visible, since it is taped on the back side, but this could be a problem if purchased in a lighter finish. Also, this back panel is very thin and if not set exactly into the frame, the wood screws used to secure it to the frame will split the veneer on the interior. Othewise, it works nicely in the space and the concerns mentioned above can be hidden with books or accessories.

This bookcase was betrayed by the little details. The paper stickers which identified each wooden piece were difficult to remove and even typical cleaners used to remove the adhesive marred the finish. Additionally, the material provided to cover the cam locks inside the finished bookcase loooked like a fabric bandage, not neat the color of the unit and did not adhere well to the cam locks. This somewhat dimininished my satisfaction but the unit is good looking and worth the money overall. The retention sysem provided to prevent the unit from falling over was quite flimsy as well. Details kept it from being excellent.

I expected this unit to be of much higher quality than it was. The unit is not a candidate for assembly. The dowels are not long enough to support the construction. The holes drilled for the screw clips are too big for the assembly hardware which depend on a tight fit in order to provide some stability. I had to take my brad gun and put this together. I had to cut new dowels and glue them in. I managed to get it to where I could use it but I would not recommend this bookcase to anyone. The only good thing I can say about it is that they did a good job on the veneer.

I purchased the Salem bookshelf about a month ago. The delivery guys put it in my truck, and I noticed one screw off the back panel loose. I thought no big deal....when we got it home, and went to tighten, a large chunk of the fiberboard came off where the screw was being screwed into. When we went to move it into my office two more screws came out, and the whole back panel fell off!!! At this point the side panels started wobbling in, it had an accordian effect. Very poor quality...and construction. I am calling the corporate office regarding this piece of junk.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by NJshopper nice piece, but misleading
The shelves are nice, and fairly sturdy. Nice finish (but a little darker than the catalog shows). The only problem we had with the piece is that the top is a solid, heavy piece, and a waste of space. I bought this to give us more space for books in our son's room, but no matter how we set up the moveable shelves, none of his books fit! We now have the trouble of trying disassemble it and pack it up and trying to ship it back, and it came in a HUGE box and was very heavy!! Good piece if you're not particular about what size the shelves really are....

This is a good quality prduct for the money. The directions are clear and it is relatively easy to assemble. There is only one point where it even makes having a helper easier than doing the work alone. Assembly took about 30 minutes and there was no tension in the process.
My only qualms about the product are two. First and most important, the lovely columns on the front of the case are a bit too long and hinder getting an even tight fit of the top to the sides. Second the back piece on my item, while clever in design, was only drilled out on three of the four sides. That added to time to put together the product and should have been picked up in a quality check. Neither issue affects the final product's ability to do its job quite well.

This bookcase looks nice when it is put together but the assembly was a nightmare because most of the pieces took alot of time to tighten and parts did not fit together evenly on the back. Very difficult to get together but when I finished it presented well. It also should have stated that it needs to be anchored to the wall to stand straight. I just had the room painted and was not going to ruin the paint job for the bookcase. After that assembly I would have spent alot more money for one already in one piece. Decent value for what it is.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Monkey219 Love this bookcase!
I purchased one of these bookcases for my 3 year old's bedroom to house his rapidly growing library and was beyond thrilled when I put it together. The assembly was very straightforward (though I do recommend an electric screwdriver to quicken the process) and easy to put together (I did it myself) and the finished product was beautiful. The color is rich and looks perfect in my son's bedroom. I loved it so much, I just ordered another one for my 1 year old and the overflow of books between the two boys. I highly recommend this product.
