When I opened the box and removed the side pieces of the ladder, I noticed cracks in the bend at the top of each piece that extended from one side almost completely across to the other side. Upon further inspection, I found a strip of white tape (I ordered the bookshelf in white) along the top of each piece, following the curve of the bend, and crossing over the crack. The damage appears to have been present when packaged and the pieces did not look used. Instead of replacing the cracked pieces prior to shipping, tape was added, whether in an attempt to "repair" it or what, I don't know. Unbelievably poor quality control. The thing would have eventually snapped and crumbled under any weight. I saw no point in further inspecting the product, it was returned to Home Depot.

I like the modern look and the color of this bookshelf, and my cutting machine fits well which was why I wanted to buy the item. However, putting it together was a little challenging. The printed directions were minimal and resulted in the shelf pieces falling onto each other at one point, which broke the top shelf. I was pretty upset about this, but we repaired it and it looks OK now. I think the directions could be better and more detailed. Just have a helper hold your shelf pieces while you put the end pieces on. The lower shelves hold a good amount of my craft items which has freed up working space on my table. Overall, its a good buy!

This is a nice, sturdy bookshelf. I bought this piece because I was looking for a bookshelf that wouldn't make our bedroom look over crowded. Thanks to the open design and relatively low profile (my husband used to walk in to the previous shelving unit I had in the same space) it works perfectly for our space. The only trouble I had assembling the bookshelf was when I has attaching the second frame piece I found that something must not have not been lined up straight or the side was slightly warped because I have to forcibly push the top down to screw it together. However, it all fit together in the end, and the whole piece feels nice and sturdy.

I almost gave up on this piece! The first time I attempted to put this bookcase together (by myself), I followed the instructions exactly and the thing kept falling apart. I finally put it away and tried it again a couple of days later. In the meantime, I read the product reviews and one had the suggestion that the piece went together easier if you attached the shelf backs to the shelves before attaching the shelves to the side pieces. I tried it that way the second time and it went together with no problems. Two people could put this bookcase together in no time. It's solid wood, very heavy and sturdy, with a beautiful finish.

We were very pleased with the appearance and quality of the finished assembly of this book/display shelf. Two small cautions: you really should "place" the top shelf in it's final location BEFORE final attachment of the side rails, otherwise you must force this piece into place; also we found it helpful to temporarily tape the cam locks in place on the second side before final assembly, so that they wouldn't fall out while lining-up the 5 posts on the second rail.
The final bookshelf is an impressive self-assembled piece of furniture - very nice finish and weight to the piece. We liked it so much that we immediately reordered another one - they look great flanking our TV.

Assembly of the bookshelf would have been easier if the screw holes had been pre-drilled on the shelves themselves. I don't have a power screwdriver, so that was difficult. Also I was surprised that the "covers" for the locking bolts were black fuzzy and not the same finish as the wood. My biggest disappointment was that I thought the shelves would be far enough apart to put magazine organizers on them---they fall short by about 1/2". So, much of what I was going to put on the bookcase won't fit. But it is sturdy and I hope will last for a long time.

We purchased the 42" bookcase to use under our TV which is hanging on the wall. We have a 37" flat screen mounted on our wall at about eye-level (when standing) so we took out the top two shelves of this bookcase and put the bookcase flat against the wall. Our TV fits perfectly inside the borders of the bookcase and it really ties everything together. It looks better than just a TV stand and we have received plenty compliments on it. Removing the two top shelves did not alter the construction - the remaining three shelves are still sturdy enough to hold nick-nacks and our cable box/dvd player.
