Does this require an underlayment when used as floating on plywood subfloor, not subject to excessive moisture? (Not in a basement.)

This question is from Hand Scraped Maple Amber 3/8 in. Thick x 4-3/4 in. Wide x 47-1/4 in Length Hardwood Flooring (299.28 sq. ft. / pallet)

Does the warranty require any type of felt or other underlayment? If so, which is recommended? Or is one simply recommended regardless of waranty? This will not be in a basement, but on an upper level, standard subfloor, and a floating floor.

Answer:
This floor doesn't absolutely need "foam" underlayment. At a minimum, a moisture barrier should be installed, such as felt. I'm not clear on what products satisfy the warranty.

Answer:
In your case, no. There is no underlayment required by our warranty, in your situation. A floating floor underlayment is recommended, however.

Answer:
Hello emrmcrn,
Yes, most if not all laminate flooring requires some sort of underlayment. The 2-in-1 type underlayment is the minimum you must have, or you can go with the 3-in-1, which will provide the moisture barrier, sound reduction and cushioning and is thicker than the 2-in-1 type.

Customer Reviews

Hand Scraped Maple Amber 3/8 in. Thick x 4-3/4 in. Wide x 47-1/4 in Length Hardwood Flooring (299.28 sq. ft. / pallet) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wood floors for a flip I bought 2 pallets of this flooring for a house I was flipping. The floor color is dark and very nice. But all the reviews are right--the flooring is very very soft and will dent very easily. For example, if you put your fingernail into it, there will be a cut/dent in it. I didn't care because I bought it for the relatively low price not for how long it will last because it only has to show well while the house is on the market. If you are planning it for your own house especially if you have kids or pets, I would definitely reconsider. By the way, I bought this same flooring in another color a couple of years ago for the house I lived in and it did suffer the same number of dents. It's just really a floor for show not for actually living unless you're okay with dents, dings, etc.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK +/- This flooring is reasonably easy to install. It looks great after installation. It scratches pretty easy - don't know how long the nice look will last. Install was completed 2 weeks ago & already has minor scratches.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful color We have had this flooring in our home for 3 years. Color and grain is beautiful! It goes well with casual and formal furniture well. Adding on and will order it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great look and good value This was my first installation of an engineered wood floor. The product was easy to install, looks great, and is a very good value. I used an upgraded underlayment (MP Global Best), which adds a good feel to the finished floor and reduced sound when compared to other hardwood floors in our home. I would consider using this product again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to install looks great! This flooring went in like a dream. Took 5 of us to install around 500 sq ft. in 8 hours. Cuts easy snaps together very nicely. Has 4 different size to stagger the seams nicely. The color is beautiful and some pieces have really great wood grain we have found a few "favorites" on the floor. Now the down side this floor has a hardness of "3" and dents. We where at the end, last 3 or so rows in our hallway and decided to bring in the couch. Well the couch didn't' quite fit and in the process of turning and lifting put about a foot and half long dent in the floor. Luckily with some elbow grease we pulled up the damaged boards and slid in new ones. Since the install a tipped over chair has dented the floor, and a laptop falling of a coffee table has dented the floor. Don't get me wrong I knew what we where buying and expected some accidents and well some "added Character" just beware it will dent and it doesn't take much force to do it. All around you can't beat the price it looks amazing and with some care and tlc will look great for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Random Length Hardwood Flooring Is The Best The products random length is what makes this so great. As laying the flooring I was able to better stagger the pieces, which resulted in far less waste. The floor was easy to cut and instal. A pull bar was only used in laying the last pieces in the closets. The only thing that was sort of a pain was that I could not cut the board Face down, or it would chip. I had to cut the board face up, with the floor being so dark it was hard, at times to see the pencil line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes a beautiful floor! Very easy to install. We ordered 2 pallets of the flooring and 1 pallet had all the same lengths of board in it and the other pallet had random lengths. Over half the floor was installed before we found this out. It worked out for us as the room was odd shaped and we could use the shorter lengths in the second pallet at the edge of the room.
