Island comes apart and easy to assemble. It is only an online piece delivered by truck. The whole top piece is in one piece with you just assembling the bottom of the island.

I use a cutting board on top so it doesn't hurt the wood finish. I'm sure you could put food on it, the top has a tendency to scratch easy however.

Top is made of Real wood. You yourself must decide what level of wear and tear you are willing to accept. I personally had a glass top custom cut for protection of the top. I bought it to use it heavily and wish it to remain beautiful.

No. the top is all wood and surface scratches easily. I use a large plastic dough sheet or arts and crafts sheet yo work on and i also use placements.

Answer:
Thank you for your inquiry. You can place food directly on the top of the unit, however, I would recommend using a barrier such as a cutting board to protect the finish of the item.

Answer:
It weighs about 240 pounds. The two biggest boxes are 70 pounds each. I had to hire two carpenters to put it together. I would check with your Home Depot store to see if you can have the island delivered to the store and have them put it together and deliver it assembled.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 38 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best purchase ever! We moved into a smaller home which is really in need of updates. However, we don't have a lot of money to spend. This kitchen island was the perfect solution! It's very high quality, functional, and looks beautiful! Only drawback ... it was a little tricky fitting one of the pieces together. Luckily, my husband is handy. And the customer service/support was excellent. March 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Better than expected This island is definitely worth the money. Solid construction and easy assembly. Before my order arrived I wanted to cancel it and not get the chairs but I was so happy with the look and quality I decided to keep them. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Island! Great Island! Love the decor and how strong it is! Easy to put together, only took a couple of hours. As you can see it looks great in the kitchen! Thank You Home Depot! April 7, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I love my Kitchen Island The Island came in 5 boxes. My husband and two sons put it together in no time. It opened up my kitchen and I know have extra counter space> I love it!!! February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful Island The island and chairs arrived on time in five boxes. My sister and I put them together but had to have someone with stronger arm strength to help with the cams. It was just what I was looking for. January 15, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Customer service disappeared I love the island unit and my husband and son had no problem putting it together. That alone would have gotten 5 stars. But I had a termite in the one stool and when I called about it the young was so shocked and said he would send me a new seat. Since then I got an email called them back and spoke with someone new and she said she didn't know if they could just replace the seat part. That was a couple weeks ago and I havn't heard anything since. October 20, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Kitchen Island The advertising for this product is misleading. One ad reads "aged cottage oak finish," the other a "distressed look." Believe me, you will be distressed all right. The entire piece, but most prominently the countertop, has a series of nail holes in it. It looks as if your eight year old had a field day with a hammer and nail. There are also these patterned "dings". There are ways to make a piece look older without making it look like someone had used it for target practice. Stupid idea by a stupid person who should be summarily fired. October 12, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Worth the EFFORT to Assemble. My wife and I assembled the island, with some difficulty making pieces fit. Customer support by the manufacturer was outstanding, with prompt response to every e-mail I sent. After the first assembly it looked pretty good, but several joints were not tight, so that dowels and screws showed at the gaps. More outstanding response from customer service. Following their hints I disassembled the unit and put it back together using a pipe clamp to squeeze the joints. Now it looks very good. The parts are designed to fit snugly. An old guy like me can't work up the strength to ram them tight. It would have been good to find in the instructions a recommendation to use a pipe clamp. Otherwise the instructions were quite easy to follow. No problems at all with the chairs, which we like a lot. August 27, 2015
