Answer:
It depends on the size. It tilled up my garden that has not been tilled since at least 4 years, but it does need a bit of patience when it encounters resistance.

I tilled hard original soil with a different 8.5amp tiller. 2 passes was enough. Just keep clearing rocks.

Hello GoldiB. If the ground has not previously been broken then this cultivator is not made for your job. This unit best performs on ground that has been tilled before. If your yard has been previously tilled then this will perform shallow cultivating to remove weeds at 7-3/4 in. tilling depth at up to 200 RPM. Avoid working the soil when soggy or wet. I hope this helps. Thanks for reaching out to us.

10 in. 8.5 Amp Electric Cultivator is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 47.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from electric cultivator Great power, front end kept flying upward instead of grinding the dirt apparently not enough weight . took me 2 hours to do a 4 x 6'section. Ugh.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing little machine! I was skeptical of purchasing this machine due to the fact that our entire backyard needed to be tilled for levelling and new sod, and the soil in our area is clay and rocks. This amazing little machine tilled to a depth of 6-8 inches without much effort on my part, other than trying to keep it under control while it churned the soil, and didn't want to stop. The slate and quartz rocks were no match for its outstanding tilling abilities, but did struggle a little if a tree root was encountered. Easy assembly, easy operation, maximum outcome!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does a good job. This is probably not the most powerful unit out there, but for my 20x8 garden it was perfect and went down relatively easy to the stated depth. It took me less than two hours to finish my garden and it was the first time a tiller had ever been used in at least 4 years. This unit is not the one you want for large jobs when time is at premium. For small jobs (like my garden), if you don't mind easing a bit when you feel the motor is under stress, it can do a very good job. I purchased mine on sale for 100$, making it a great buy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Amazing I bought this little handy dandy tiller to do the garden that I paid someone to till for me last year. Since the area had already been a garden, I thought i was home free. I mowed the grass and put this baby to work. It does not dig into the ground at all it goes so fast forward that it kills your arms to keep it in place to try and till an area. Honestly I messed with it for an hour trying to get it to dig and it just does not have enough weight to it to do a good job. I read the reviews and made sure the ground was not too hard, the ground is nice and moist and now I have $200 piece of equipment that is useless! Save your money and buy a better tiller!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy set-up I received the tiller. It is a replacement for a gas tiller that I've had for years. The out-of-the-box setup was very easy and took less than thirty minutes and required no tools. I used it and was satisfied with the results. In comparison with my gas tiller, this unit is much easier to maneuver. The unit does overheat and at one point during the project I saw smoke. The unit will shut itself off and can be easily restarted once it is cooled. For the money, it's a decent deal.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beware of what you really want This product is likely not what you are looking for if you have anything other than already prepared garden beds and looking to mix it up a bit. Overheats within a few minutes of doing this task, never mind something a bit heavier. This is NOT a small rototiller. Do NOT expect be able to use it to break up ground. Using it for our small garden beds and it is OK.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect for my small little flower areas I use this in my flower beds and around the house, No problems. I do square foot gardening, and break up the soil with a shovel, Then I come in with this small rototiller and it smooths everything out. Very nice. be sure to use a heavier gauge extension cord,

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works for what I needed easy to assemble. works for already somewhat tilled dirt. Do not recomend for untilled dirt (heavy sod). have not used it that much yet.
