Answer:
If you read the manual you will see that you use a normal outdoor extension cord. Just make sure that the cord you choose has just a single plug on the end.

This trimmer is powered by an external outdoor extension cord. You do have to purchase it seperately from the Trimmer.

Answer:
Yes it is sold separately. You need about a 50' or 100' extension cord depending on the space you want to decrease weeds or grass. I have a 100' cord and it works all around my house.

Be aware that the string advance mechanism will just stop working at some point and you'll have to take the head apart to advance the line manually. I wish I'd purchased the type you tap on the ground to advance.

Rated 3.0 out of 5 by 174 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent trimmer I just ordered another electric Home Lite trimmer and spool package because my old one finally fell apart after five years of weekly use in three seasons.. Easy to use for trimming grass along the fence line & around planted areas. I especially like it to trim neatly around my rosebushes. The pre-wound spools are easy for me to replace on the trimmer. I brush it clean after each use & keep it along with the mower & electric cable inside my screened porch. With all the weather changes here in Missouri, I think my tools last longer simply because I protect them from the weather, besides cleaning & oiling them. July 10, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by You get what you pay for Lightweight, but being electric makes needing a cord (or 2 or 3) a pain for large yards. Got mine last spring as a backup for our gas powered trimmer and used it once before storing for the winter. Pulled it out to use it and now I know why my hubby has let our edges get a foot tall. It has serious issues with letting line out. The 'automatic feed' doesn't work as advertised making it so you have to stop, take apart, re spool line (it unravels very easily), feed through hole, put back together quite often trim for 3 minutes and repeat. Needless to say, I'm going to drop it off at the donation box. At least it was only $30 down the hole. Hopefully the future owner has more patience than I do. July 5, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not the bargain that I was looking for. I was looking for a low cost trimmer when selecting this one. That's exactly what I received. I am reminded of the old adage that "you get what your pay for." The trimmer performed fairly well for one year. Used it to edge lawns, trim around deck, trim around rose bushes, etc. I had to be extremely careful around rose bushes as it had no guard against beating up the trunks. Otherwise it performed fairly well. My complaint is that it ceased to function after about 10-12 months. I tried connecting it to several different electrical outlets to no avail. The on/off switch seems to be broken internally. June 27, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It does the job I need it to do It is a basic weedeater. It chops weeds, I am happy. July 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible spool design Frustrating to use Terrible spool design. It either lets out no string at all when you need it or way too much when you don't. The string gets too short and it won't give you more so you have to stop and take the cap off to pull some out. Cut weeds for 2 minutes and then 5 minutes fixing the spool. Over and over and over. And I'm not talking big weeds; small little weeds in the sidewalk and curb. Or, it lets out way too much line. The amount of line that comes out beyond the gaurd gets cut off by the gaurd's built-in sharp edge. Lots of pieces of the cut line left all over the yard. Went thru 100 feet of line in an hour. Massively frustrating to use. I returned it to the store. June 3, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Uses a lot of line but works The trimmer takes a little coddling to work properly. The line feeds when you release the trigger, so you need to get used to releasing it frequently. Cut a couple weeds, release the trigger. Be sure not to let the line get too short or you will have to restring it, or manually advance the spool as the centrifical force won't be enough to feed the line. It also makes it likely you will foul the line inside the spool. Feeding line properly will chew up a lot of line, so I suggest buying bulk line and refilling the spool yourself (*a skill you will learn in the first hour of using) rather than buying prefilled spools at HD for 7.97 a pop. The price is great, but you get what you pay for. If you want to trim stuff around a large property this is definitely not the trimmer for you. If you have a small yard, it's probably all you need. June 25, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Took it back This weedeater didn't have the power I expected and needed. It qualifies as a grass trimmer, but would not handle the weeds. I retuned it and got one with more power. I would recommend it as a grass trimmer only, but if you have weeds, it is disappointing. July 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DO NOT BUY I will say $30.00 is a deal overall. At $30 it makes it it pretty easy to throw it in the trash after a couple uses. It flat out is disappointing. The string release is so poor. You will not be able to get through a whole yard weed cutting without running out of string. The string set up for this unit is a unique size. You have to buy pre thread string in a 3 pack for around $13.00. They seem to make it where it is impossible to restring it yourself. I have spent more time reloading this thing. It is way too much frustration. June 9, 2016
