Pretty much any brand of chain oil will work OK. Some are darker which make it easier to see the level in the machine.

Answer:
The manufacturer says bar and chain oil. However in cold weather that stuff likes to gel, another manufacturer says SAE 30 or simple 10W30 will work. However they mention increased oil consumption and possible excessive wear to the bar and chain. -- Applies only to electric chainsaws. Never use motor oil in a gas saw unless you're in real trouble.

For the bar oil? Just buy the cheap bar oil right by the saw (I forget the brand) but any brand bar oil will work.

Not recommended, but in an emergency you could temporarily use automotive motor oil. This would likely void your warranty. And you should understand your bar and chain would wear more quickly.
Better lubrication will extend the service life of your bar and chain.
Its much cheaper to buy chain oil than to buy new bars and chains more frequently.
Chain oil can be found in stores near the chain saws. Read Less

Answer:
If you are looking for a replacement chain for your homelite, you do not have to use brand specific; Ie, I changed out my 16' bar and chain on my homelite chainsaw with an 18" power care bar and chain...most of the packages indicate what saws the bar and chain are compatible with...some even indicate the exact model numbers of the saws they will work with.

Write down the model number on your chainsaw and take it with you to Home Depot. The various chain packages fit several models, and there are several model numbers on the package. You should be able to find yours on one of these. If not, there are HD personnel always willing to help.

Answer:
Usually the chain tightness is controlled by the operator. And the chain is normally tightened to the point of just snug, and by lifting the chain from the bar 1/8" is a good rate. Also stay away from small limbs and loose brush.

Answer:
Either your chain is too loose, or you are twisting the bar against the cut. When you are cutting in a perpendicular position, you can only move it in the cut in an up and down motion. As for the manual, you can get it on line. Put the brand name and model number in your search engine, along with the word, "manual" and you should be able to find the manuat to print it out.

Answer:
You may not have the chain around the sprocket on correctly. Make sure the inside teeth of the chain match up to the sprocket indentations. Or, you don't have the tensions tab inserted correctly in the chain bar. This would make the chain come off because you wont be able to apply the right amount of tension to the chain when adjusting it.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't waste your money. Can't even trim a hedge!! The chain bar is to flexible. The oiler doesn't work, the chain won't stay on no matter how you adjust it. Noisey and rattles. I RETURNED IT IN LESS THAN 2 (TWO) HOURS. I bought a Ryobi pole saw instead. Much better. Same money! August 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great choice for the money and size No assembly required just open the box add oil and start cutting trees. that was one of the best parts about this after the hurricane here in Florida. it was a great help and with other high priced options, im glad that i chose this one. Homelite brand is a great brand ive bought many of their products and im very satisfied with all of them. October 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by As Advertised Ready to go right out of the box - just add the oil. Made short work of my large ash tree. Love not needing to deal with gas/oil or that tool that always seemed to be missing in the old models to adjust the chain. Seems sturdy so far. October 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I had brought a truck load of wood down from the mountain, and needed to cut it down to fireplace size before splitting it. Unfortunately my gas powered saw obviously had some varnish in the carburetor from sitting for too long. I decided that I would get this electric saw to have at the house and fix my gas saw later. I really like that this electric saw and my gas saw use the same chain, and since they are both Homelite they have the same tensioning system. I am ultimately very impressed with this little saw. It's not as powerful as my gas saw, but I was anticipating that when I bought it. I am surprised at how powerful it really is, and it's so easy to use. I know that I will fix my gas saw before I go back up to the mountain to get another load of wood, but I doubt that I will make my neighbors hear that two stroke motor again. October 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Read all reviews carefully; 4 star rating misleading I purchased this product less than 2 weeks ago. It is going back today! Wish I had read all the ratings and not just relied of it being 4/5 stars. The chain will not stay on; if you wish to put the chain on between every cut and sometimes 2, 3, or more per cut then this is for you. Plus left to sit overnight the oil leaks, leaving wooden countertop with large oil spots. Yuck! October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product Survived the hurricane Matthew had some clean-up went to Home Depot for an affordable chain saw and found variuos products on their shelves I decided to go with Homelite 16in chainsaw i'm very satisfied with the product it out preformed my expectations I will purchase other homelite products in the future as I need them thank you for a great product October 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Chainsaw I had a tree fall during Hurricane Matthew and needed a chain saw. I read many of the reviews and watched lots of youtube videos and felt this was going to be a good buy. I used the mobile app and purchased online. Then first thing this morning I went to the store to pick this up. And I was right, it is a good buy. Many of the written reviews mentioned the chain falling off. Mine did once as well. I found that after many cuts if you reach down and tighten the tension control the chain does not fall off. Once I determined not to ignore that everything ran fine. You also have to keep an eye on the bar and chain oil reservoir. The saw uses oil. But it performed excellently. My neighbor brought his 40cc gas powered 16 inch chainsaw and I found the two were very comparable in performance. But mine did not run out of gas. I did not have to mix oil into gas. Mine was not near as loud, in fact hearing protection is not required. I also followed the instructions and emptied the oil reservoir once finished. After cutting up the tree I am very satisfied. I can put this away until needed next time and not worry about it sitting with gas or the engine seizing because it has not be run. I am very impressed. October 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Lite chainsaw This 16 inch HomeLite chain saw is made for light use. It is very consumer grade. Don't expect this chain saw to last long or cut many big branches. If you occasionally cut a tree branch, this chainsaw is for you. Buyer remorse: I wish I had shop around for a better built one. I paid HomeDepot slightly over $80. October 11, 2016
