We had these 40 years ago when I was young. They'd last like 3 years. This one runs good and battery life is okay and it seems nice. But I've only charged it 3 times now and already blade went dull. Now it doesn't cut well at all. Are replacement blades available for it?

Yes, Mac, the blades are available. Please use part number (310964001) and contact our parts distributor, Gardner, by dialing 877-544-9250. I have checked inventory and they have plenty in stock. I do not know the pricing but they will be able to help you. Thanks!

There is a black cover on the bottom of the shear behind the cutting blades. This must be in place and the slide latch in the locked position to depress the lockout button on top of the handle. If the cover is in place and locked, remove it. Look for a small gray plastic button-like protrusion on the shear unit right behind the blade assembly. It should be sticking out about 1/4". If pressing the grey plastic piece (or it's missing) your grass shears is broken.
If the above works, look for a small ramp on the slide latch of the black cover. This ramp is what pushes the grey button in when you lock the cover in place. This ramp may be broken and pushing the gray plastic piece. Read Less

I have a Homelite model UT44174 Cordless Shear. The battery is dead and will not recharge. It's a 4.8 volt battery package. The unit is about three years old and the sales receipt is long gone.

Where can I acquire a new battery?

I have searched the web a lot for replacement batteries, and cannot find any. The Homelite manual states: "NOTE: Batteries are not intended to be replaced." Furthermore, you need to open the case/housing (which I have done). The battery is hardwired in. You would need soldering skills to remove & replace the battery even if you could find one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from BATTERY BAD Purchased 2 years ago at Home Depot. Battery will not charge. Tossed in trash. No more Homelite Products for this household.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor battery life, Homelite provides poor rude response to questions about battery life Would not hold a charge with the 180 ma charger provided. 2 notes written to Homelite about expected battery life were 1st, completely uninformative, 2nd attempt, rude, told me they could not give me an estimate, just to charge it several times before it would reach full capacity and that's all they would tell me, even though I asked what ma/hour capacity the batteries were, basically, sorry that's all we're telling you. Interesting to note this is another formerly American company now owned by Techtronic, a Hong Kong based holding company which owns many brands including Milwaukee.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Battery no good, waste of money! Like several other people I used this only through the summer for about 4 months until it would no longer work. What a waste of money. I do not have much of an area and only needed it for around 15 minutes each time until the battery died in the fall. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Skeptical about Home Depot to carry a product like this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 4.8V Grass Shears Easy to use & cuts well, but batteries do not last long even though I take very good care of this product by cleaning blades after every use. Even spray a dry lube on blades to cut done on the resistance.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A very poor choice The blades dull quickly, are not replaceable. One of the blades on my unit broke. The unit does not hold a charge. One of the poorer yard purchases I've made.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 2 summers, total of an hour's use and battery is dead Only used this 2 summers for a total of an hour's use. Went to use it this summer and battery won't charge. Very disappointed!
