Is the battery replaceable? If so where is it located? I have Model UT44170. Works well but doesn't hold a charge very long ( have to keep the charger engaged with a extension cord).

Answer:
No, not really. I opened mine after it died. The battery is basically hardwired. Furthermore, I searched for the battery "pack" and didn't find a replacement.

First of all , I do not own one of these, but I do anticipate getting one so this is mostly basic information.Basically any battery operated rechargeable item can have the batteries replaced.Think of a cordless phone or cellphone. With sealed units like this trimmer, it is just a matter of removing the screws that keep the outer body halves together to reveal the type of battery that it requires.Someone at the factory installed batteries in it when it was made,so you just need to open it up to see what type they are.Unplug the old ones and remove. There will always be a number on the battery to identify the type and a voltage number as well.Often the trickiest part is getting the halves back together once you install the new ones.Just be careful as to how any wires and the switch go back in. I just did this on a very old rechargeable weed eater.Do a seach on the battery number or check one of your local battery outlets and I can almost guarantee you will find a replacement! Open it up! You were going to throw it out anyway , so what do you have to lose?P.S. The tool manufacturers don't want you to know this, so you will go out and buy another one! Good luck. Read Less

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 36 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't Bother Once battery won't take a charge you have to throw the whole shrubber away. Called company and there is no way to replace battery. This lasted about one season. If you have arthritis in hands the switching is hard to use. May 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 7.2 volt grass shrubber shrubber was lightweight and easy to use, unit charged quickly. May 24, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Handy grass and shrub trimmer Charged and used it in a few hours. It is small and handy - like the product. May 10, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't buy this, terrible battery life I bought this believing it was like most rechargeable units, plug it in and let it charge up. That worked fine for the first year then died. Awful unit. April 3, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by poor power supply After two seasons of light trimming, about ten to twelve separate times using it, the battery holds only enough charge to cut the smaller branches (it used to easily cut ones twice the size) and is good for only about five to eight minutes before it gives out. February 24, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Handy for touch up This product is handy for minor touch up of a hedge or shrub. Not for heavy trimming. December 8, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk Battery dead in less than a year! No replacement available. Had to take apart on second use because of trigger jam. Model is not even listed at manufacture home page. Best advice, do buy! September 29, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Underpowered I was hoping for more power. Its OK for grass but not much use for brush. October 13, 2015
