I have a second similar machine that is 5 years old and it is first showing signs of wear now, probably 30 or so extended uses.

I've had mine 10 years and plan to replace the rubber auger parts before next winter. This will be the first time they have been replaced. Don't forget that the scraper bar on the bottom should be inspected and probably replaced at the same time. I've seen the parts (there are 6 rubber auger pieces and 1 scraper bar) online for roughly $60.

Hi Bert:
The auger paddles on the HS520 are made of a heavy-duty rubber material designed to be strong and flexible for the best possible snow throwing performance. The useful life of the paddles is relative to the conditions. Abrasive or rough surfaces will cause the paddles to wear a bit faster than if used on a smooth surface. With the scraper bar adjusted properly for conditions, a typical residential customer should expect years of service from the paddles. Please note paddles are a wear item, like tires on a car, and must be replaced when worn out. Hope this helps, -Robert@Honda Read Less

Manufactures are usually not in the habit of having installed pieces that are not required for use. I would do a little closer checking perhaps on line on the particular unit and check all available photos.

No, that hardware is used to mount the starter control. See page 3 & 4 in the owner's manual for complete details. If you didn't get a manual, download a digital copy here:

I've seldom found a pre-season sale on these machines, I've purchased both mine on sale late in the season, but it'll be a small amount off and they'll go fast.

Answer:
I would say the best time to purchase a snowthrower is at the end of season as far as price, but don't wait to long the more desireable machines go quick. Selection may not be ideal another option is very early in the season, waiting for the snow to fly is a little late.

Hi Randy:
I'd suggest you give your local store a call and see what they can tell you. Thanks for considering a Honda snowthrower.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Home Depot and Honda to the Rescue! Our trusty ten year old snowblower finally bit the dust. Being a particularly brutal Chicago winter this year, we soon learned snow blowers were becoming increasingly hard to find in stock! But we decided to check out Home Depot online and are so glad we did. We purchased a Honda 20 inch Electric Start Snowblower, the Honda HS520AS.The electric start makes it so easy to start. The manual start is also much easier to use than other snow throwers we have had over the years..no heart attack using this Honda! It is a surprisingly quiet snow thrower...our old one was always so loud! I highly recommend this snow thrower. The online shopping experience also comes highly recommended. The ease of checkout, the ability to communicate with online professionals made the entire experience a pleasure. Thank you Home Depot and Honda for coming to our rescue this snowy winter March 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic for a single stage snowblower I've had an HS520AS for about 10 years now. It is still running strong and has needed almost no maintenance. I did break a couple of the bolts that hold the handlebar in place. They are a special design, so I had to purchase those from the dealer. Other than that and basic maintenance, it's been problem free. I do plan to replace the rubber auger and scraper bar after this winter. But after 10 years, that's certainly to be expected. I would absolutely recommend this unit. It's a bit expensive, but well worth it!!! I attached a photo of my 5'3" daughter. Note the snow bank behind her. It is becoming a challenge to get the HS520AS to pile more snow on top of the snow back, but you have to admit... it's done a great job this winter. One last thing I almost forgot about. It ALWAYS has started on the first or second pull in the fall. I have NEVER actually used the electric start. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't buy the electric start AS model. You really don't need it. February 8, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Snow Beast! Heck of a niced little unit. Assembled from the box quite easily even for someone with only a basic set of wrenches. Once assembled, oiled & fueled up it cleared the walkway simply and quickly without missing a beat. The auger works great and really chews up the snow. After the walk I threw some red food coloring on the driveway snow and then threw it into the front yard. We set the blower out front and jam'd a boot in the auger to look like the woodchipper scene from Fargo. This little show blower get's a lot of attention, fine runner! The chute is extremely easy to operate and you can blow the snow clear across the yard, on the neighbors dog or wherever you want to throw it! It really runs strong. They electric start is worth the extra money over the base model. Very nice little unit! January 10, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Basic over priced Junk It has never worked right - it has been in the shop more than it has moved any snow. It is now in the shop again - last time -- if it doesn't work right after this - its junk. This machine is way over priced for what you get. I have used it only on light snow - nothing over 5 inches. When it does work it is good and fast BUT it never seems to even make it through the job before it breaks down February 15, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good machines I have purchased 3 of these Hondas all with electric start. The first one had a problem with performance the second year and needed to be repaired which was not properly done and had additional problems and due to not having all pieces of broken part inside engine did further damage and required engine replacement. So I decided to replace the entire machine which has been operating for a few years now they are a great little machine and although I did have trouble with the first unit it's replacement has operated without any problems, also the third machine at a different residence has never had any problems after 4 years. My only suggestion would be on the chute control handle as it should be shorter so it does not stick out further than the side of the machine so it would not scrape the car when snoblowing next to it. Perhaps a remote control would be an improvement.. January 26, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It appears to be a good product - as most Honda products We bought this snowblower at the end of this winter (2013), and we only used it after the last snow storm. It was great! I was very impressed at its ease of use. However, this is the first time we used it and also the first time I've used a snowblower. The only difficulty I had was finding the drain screw to drain the gasoline for summer storage. I have used other Honda products in the past, and all have been good and reliable. We will see what happens next winter. April 30, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by HondaLawn Mower. 21 in. Nexite Deck Electric Start Gas Mower Just bought and used 3days ago. My yard has slope and I was concerned about it. However, this Honda mower has so much power, I do not even push at all, other words, I could be even pulled since 190cc engine. I was not expected this much power but I am fully satisfied with this mower. That is why I bought HondaSnow Blowers. 20 in. Single-Stage Electric Start Gas Snow Blower too. Can not wait to have snow this season! October 29, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love the electric start I had this model without the electric start. A shoulder injury prevented me from starting it last year. I sold that one and got the electric start. So nice to push a button and have it start right up. It handles all kinds of snow without any problems. Have used it twice so far this year. Hondas are pricey, but they are well-made and built to last. January 1, 2014
