Hi Dave:
Yes! When you release the blade control (Roto-Stop) the blades stop spinning, but the engine continues to run, and if you have the SmartDRIVE engaged, the mower will continue to self-propel.

Yes, the one I have has 3 options: Bag, Mulch, or Discharge. For the discharge option, you simply need to set it to the Bag option, but don't attach the bag. The clippings will drop out the rear hatch.
I personally haven't used this option, as the mulching works really well, even in tall grass that is a bit moist.

On top of the bag is a large, black plastic guard which flips down when the bag is removed. Clippings can be discharged to the rear when the bag is removed, if the "Clip Director" is set to the "BAG" position. Not having a side discharge chute allows the mower to cut close to a wall or fence in either direction. The mower can also be used as a rear discharge mower with the clip director set to partially mulch and partially discharge to the rear. When strictly mulching the bag serves no purpose and can be removed if desired. Read Less

Hi Marty:
HRX and HRR models have REAR discharge built-in. There is no option to covert either to a side-discharge design.
Honda HRS models DO HAVE a side discharge design built-in. HRS models are "no-frills" basic mowers, but feature the same GCV160 engine found on many other Honda mower models. Included here is a link to the HRS216SDA, which is a single-speed self=propelled model.

21 in. 3-in-1 Variable Speed Gas Self Propelled Mower with Blade Stop is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 285.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this mower for mulching (and everything else) Honda is the best for mulching and the blade brake is so convenient. I purchased this mower to replace an equivalent Honda that is 9 years old. The transmission in my old Honda was slipping. I hope Honda has improved the transmission. If not, that is the one flaw. But the engine and mulcher are amazing. I wanted to try a different kind of mower since my previous two had been Hondas. I bought an equivalently-priced Husqvarna and intentionally let my grass grow for two weeks. The Husqvarna had problems mulching my grass and I returned it and bought this Honda. The grass grew another 5 days and I mowed/mulched it today with this Honda with no problems. Actually, my 9-year-old Honda also had no problems mulching the grass. There is almost nothing bad I can say about this mower (I'll see how the transmission works over time, but that will be many years). 1. I love the blade brake for two reasons. A) I have a lot of dirt around my house that I need to take the mower across. If the blade can't be stopped, the spinning blade makes a huge amount of dust. B) It is nice to walk away from the mower and pick things up without having to restart the mower. 2. The mulcher is amazing. If the grass is high, there is a little bit of clumped grass that I have to distribute with a rake, but this is not a problem with normal length grass. I have also run in bagging mode and this works really well, too. But I'm too lazy to bag when I can mulch (plus the nutrients go back into the soil). 3. It is really easy to raise or lower the handle and it folds really easy. 4. The instructions are easy to read and understand. 5. It is easy to turn the mower on its side and rinse off the grass. Note: This mower does not have a connecter you can connect your hose to for washing it. That could be a disadvantage, but I don't really know how well those connecters work for grass that is stuck to the body. 6. I like the handle that allows switching between the mulcher and the bagger without having to insert a mulcher adapter (improvement over the previous version). 7. I like the adjustment on the self-propelled throttle. You can raise or lower the throttle for comfort (improvement over the previous version). If your thumbs get tired, you can raise the throttle angle and use your palms instead. 8. An equivalently priced Honda had a push-button start instead of blade brake. It might be convenient to have a push-button start (I have never had one), but the mower always starts easy with the pull-start and I rarely have to start it because I can keep it running with the blade brake when I walk away. 9. My experience in the past is that it is best to replace the blade(s) rather than sharpen them. When I had them sharpened once, the mulcher didn't work right. Perhaps the one detriment is that the wheels don't have much tread. The self-propeller runs great with these wheels, but I had to replace the wheels on my last Honda when they wore down after a number of years.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from So, so...... I purchased this mower 3 years ago, and I expected quite a bit, it wasn't cheap. Toward the end of my third cutting season, I would not recommend. I've had to put the front left wheel on twice (if falls off), bagging capacity is so poor I gave up on it, and the tabs on the height adjuster fall off as well. Last night my wife was mowing for me and the self-propelled drive went kaput . I guess I expected more from a Honda.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good mower Never had a self propelled mover before, though this one is nice. Speed is adjustable to suit your walking pace. Mulch ability dose a good job on an acre of land, just don't have three foot tall grass. It will do it but it is murder on the mower. After using it to cut down my three foot tall grass and keeping up with it this summer it has been great. Worth the buy.

I've only used this mower once due to the winter weather setting in but I was thoroughly impressed with its performance. I had been waiting on my old mower to get out of the shop & when I found out how much it was going to cost, I elected to purchase a new one. I'd never owned a Honda & decided to jump off & try it out - Cost was the only thing holding me back before. My thick fescue lawn was about 3" taller than usual but it didn't have any problem plowing thru it. The result was a beautiful cut with no residue left behind. I really like the double blade; seems to help pulverize the clippings better. Lots of settings for the wheels which is a plus. Easy to start and easy to get set up for 1st mowing. The self propelled unit is awesome as well. It will take you for a ride if you want to walk that fast
Date published: 2016-12-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product for the money I've only used the mower a few times, however I'm extremely happy with it. Both times that I have mowed I've used the bagging feature and it picks up the clipping as you would expect. The mower was hard to backup when I first got it out of the box but it's much easier now as the belt is breaking in. I would definitely recommend this product.
