A small and light 21" mower is perfect for small yards with many turns required to get around items. For long straight runs the self propelled unit might be more suitable. The SDA model is self propelled though I don't own this model it does cover it in the same user's manual and the drive transmission appears to be on the rear axle. It's not geared wheels that wear down as in other brands, the SDA model has an enclosed gear box wrapped around a portion of the the rear axle. Read Less

Answer:
It's a push mower so there is no power drive on it at all. I like that because there's less chance for power drive related break downs and the mower is easier to maneuver.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 147 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Used only once, but best ever Disclaimer - new, used only once. Wanted a basic but well-built mower and this is it. Bought it based on standard characteristics: all-steel chassis, mulching capability, non self-propelled, idle setting, Honda name. (Would've liked option of bag.) This review would be more valuable had mower been used more, nevertheless in the one use it could not have been better. Started first pull, ran smooth, cut best in mulch-mode of any mower I've had. Fyi, noticed some other reviewers consider this mower "heavy" but I find it the lightest and most maneuverable I've ever used. Based on what little I've seen so far I expect this mower will last many years. June 3, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very well [pleased After about 4 months of using this Honda lawnmower, I have been able to determine that this product is very well constructed and will even mow through a thick blanket of leaves with no trouble at all. It leaves behind a well distributed, much thinner layer of well mulched leaves. My old mowers of a different brand often times left a caked up mess of grass clippings that needed to be scraped from underneath the mower when I was done using it. This product has never given me this trouble. So far, absolutely nothing has stuck to the underside of this machine. I am very happy with this product all the way around. December 30, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what I needed Owned mine for five years and it's great for my needs (smaller yard, would also be great for a trimmer mower). I mulch with the standard blade, which works fine if you don't let the grass get too long. Tip: remove the air filter and plug wire before cleaning the underside -- the air filter can flood with oil depending on which way you tip it, and the Honda engine starts so easily I can imagine it coming to life just by moving the blade while cleaning. I spend an hour every fall, draining gas, replace oil and thoroughly cleaning and oiling the underside of the deck, plus I store it in a heated space, so I think this mower may last a lifetime. June 14, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Cuts Well, Hard to Push This is a nice mower, but much harder to push than I expected, and much harder than the 16 year old generic one it replaced. The front wheels are way ahead of the cutting deck, so it doesn't trim close to objects in the front. It cuts very level, probably due to the super long wheelbase, which also makes it hard to turn, but go well in a straight line. It's very well built and starts the first time it fires, every time. Great engine, really qiuet and it has an adjustable engine speed control, which many others lack. From a function standpoint, it's really nothing special, but the best value I could find with an OHV engine and good for getting lots of exercise. April 24, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by High quality mower. I wanted a simple mower that was quality made without self-propel. Toro, John Deere, had self-propel feature. I've had too many self-propel mowers in the past which break after the warrenty expires. The mower does have a plus a real " Honda engine". Quiet operation, metal deck and fuel shut-off switch. Home Depot offer of free shipping was a saving. I priced this same mower from other suppliers and they added shipping. The mower was shipped in an original Honda product box and shipped UPS. The mower was in perfect condition and the box was also in perfect condition. Very please to purchase this on-line. May 14, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great engine & performance / reliabilty This is my second one of these. I bought the first in April 1999, & after 13 years the engine starts flawlessly on the first pull, but the deck is rusting to where mower is no longer usuable. I received the new one from HD, just 3 days after ordering it online. Straighten the handle bars, tighten, add the included bottle of oil, gas it up & it started on first pull. It is identical to my 1999 model except the stickers/look & such have changed. I hope this one will last 13/14 years as well. Would highly recommend this HONDA push mower. Little over priced but I suppose you get what you pay for. May 25, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by honda push mower The mower is fine but it is not what I ordered. The one on the website is a different model. You may want to update your website. Unfortunately for me the model advertised by home Depot is no longer being sold by honda so I decided to keep the newer model even though I bought the one with the throttle control. It is quite enough that I can live with it. Having been through this experience with the home Depot website I probably will not order anything from you all again - but I like the local McAllen store. Juan Cavazos Jr. August 26, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Honda push mower is great Ordered online, wasn't supposed to be here for about 10 days, but arrived in two. Pretty much ready to go out of the box. Started right away and no problems at all. The quality is great, I like having the adjustable speed control. Last mower just ran at one speed all the time. If I could of, I would give it a 4 1/2 stars as not too much is perfect, and only used it three times. No complaints at all. If I had to nitpick something, it is that the side discharge chute comes off easily if you bump into a fence or something. But it also attaches easily. May 6, 2014
