2.5 mph too fast for me (82); wasn't expecting that. Clutch bar far below mower handle requiring removing one hand to reach way down and pull up clutch bar. Drive then engaged in first 15 degrees causing mower to jump ahead with other hand on mower (Put clutch bar 15+ degrees from mower; could then engage securely with both thumbs). Ended up keeping rear wheel drive always engaged and holding mower back, with rear wheels skidding, on corners (Had accepted rear wheel drive because of St Augustine grass here in New Orleans).
Returned mower after one use (Home Depot very accommodating).
Mower needs 1) adjustable speeds, 2) better clutch control, 3) front wheel drive (control), 4) adjustable engine speed.

I have a lot of experience with mowers having grown up in a mower shop. This mower is exactly what I wanted, side discharge and mulch and no bagging. Honda has always built great engines but I am equally impressed with the rest of the mower. Discharges very well, haven't mulched yet. The long, rigid handle gives better leverage for maneuvering making the unit easier to use and feel lighter than it actually is. I also like the single speed SP unit for its simplicity, effectiveness and durability, you don't need multiple speeds if the one speed is right for you. I only use the self propelling for the hilly parts of my property and the speed is right for hill climbing. This mower also pushes as easily as a non-SP version so I can go quickly over sparse, flat areas when propelling isn't needed. For those reviewers who say the SP engagement bar is too far away, I recommend they bump the bar with their body which will engage the unit and bring the bar up to a thumb-reachable level. It isn't difficult, just get creative. I guess Honda wants to make sure the drive engagement is intentional and if it were closer people might grab it too easily by accident. This mower definitely isn't cheap but it is very well built and I expect it will last.

i bought this mower in late march i wanted to use it for a few months before i gave a review. i want to start with saying this honda mower does what it should, it mows the grass very well i wish everything every in life just worked. it is self propelled i am 52 and have no problem keeping up with it it starts on the first pull i have almost an acre with a steep little hill and i mow twice a week with no issues. the rear wheel drive was a little different but very easy to adapt to this thing is good on gas, easy to clean just use a garden hose. not a lot of bells and whistles you just turn on the fuel hold the blade control bar give it a pull and it starts hold the self propel bar down and your off. i had been using a craftsman self propelled with a 6.5 horse power briggs and stratton motor, the honda is lighter uses less gas mows cleaner, if you need a mower give this one a look, oh and the warranty seems good. i recommend this mower, i hope this helps.

good cutting.. single speed is a little too fast to handle with the rear wheels drive. Overall great..

This was my first Honda mower. I purchased this mower because it was simply a rear drive, side discharge/mulcher. I did not want a mower with a bagger. This mower starts very easily and runs and cuts very well. The only thing that I do not like about this mower is the clutch lever hangs 8 - 10 inches below the handle bar. You must remove one hand from the handle bar and be very careful not to have your other hand wrapped around the handle bar or you will pinch your fingers when you bring the clutch lever up. Other than that I am very pleased with my Honda mower

Provides very good cut. Self-propel feature works well. I wish the handle had more position adjustments. Also, the machine is bulky and difficult to maneuver around obstacles. I would still recommend it.

I have only used this mower 1 time, but I am experienced at using self propelled mowers, of different manufacturers, for the past 50+ years. It seems to be a pretty good mower. The only issue that I have with the mower is that the drive control lever is not easy to use. It would work a lot easier if it was located a little closer to the handle bar so that you could reach it without having to remove your hand from the handle bar. While holding the mower/ blade control lever down against the handle bar you have to be careful that your fingers are out of the way when you bring the drive control lever up against the handlebar. It hangs down a good 8 to 10 inches near your thighs. I had an issue with the drive control lever not disengaging properly (it would not drop down on it's own), but I oiled both sides of the lever and the upper part of the cable and it seems to work easier. The mower came completely assembled with the mower on top of the bottle of oil. The bottle leaked completely through the owners manual, but was contained mostly in a plastic bag. I will download a copy of the owners manual later. There was just enough oil to partially fill the mower. The bottom line is that I would recommend this mower to anyone who wants a no frills self propelled side discharge / mulcher ( that is not very fast) but exactly what I wanted.
