I am looking for a great mulching mower for grass at 3 in high that does not leave clumps. Will this work for me?

My current Toro mulches great when the grass is not too high. I hate bagging the clippings because I then have to put the clippings in plastic bags and dispose.
Asked by: sjr
This mower is a stud. Unless the grass is really, really wet and tall, I have NEVER had a problem with the clippings clumping up. The dual blades chop the grass so fine there is no way for them to clump. The grass is chopped so small that it almost creates a problem (if you catch the clippings) because the bag gets too heavy when it is full. The variable adjustment on the back of the mower that allows for degrees of mulching and bagging is perfect for those times when you just have to mow really wet, tall grass.

I've waited to write this review so I could give an honest review after using this mower for 1 year. I did about a month of research before choosing this mower, believe me I looked at every other mower out there. This is by far the best mower that I have ever owned! The build quality is solid, the speed of the self propelled control is great for all types of users because of the adjustable dial. It can be adjusted from a very slow crawl to a very fast walking pace. I tend to like to get my mowing done as quick as possible, so I usually have it on full speed and I have to walk quickly to keep up. But with the control lever turned to fastest speed, you can still go from the fastest speed to a crawl by pressing the lever less or more. So I can be going full speed and then slow to a crawl as I need to maneuver around trees, stone edging, mailboxes, etc. The composite deck is really nice too, because I never have to worry about RUST. I live in Florida where we have the salt air and high humidity and steel deck mowers start to rust quickly... even if kept in a garage, which mine is. The 190cc Engine has impressive power on my very thick and healthy St Augustine grass, never bogging down at all. It easily starts on the first pull every time. I do recommend using a fuel treatment additive or ethanol free gas on any lawn equipment. (Ethanol is death to lawn mowers) any mower will start having carburetor after a year or two if you use gas with Ethanol. My local gas station has a Ethanol Free pump and I only use this fuel in all my gas powered yard equip. The mulching and bagging option is nice if you want to choose how much grass to bag vs mulch. I don't bag at all, so I use the mulch only option which works great, chopping up the grass into such small pieces that you can't even see them. I'm sure the Honda Twin Blade feature is why it mulches so well. Overall this mower is awesome! You will not be disappointed if you make this purchase. I know it's on the expensive side or the self propelled mowers but it's worth it. I'm sure the $399 less expensive Honda mower is great too, but I wanted the composite deck and 190cc engine. I have neighbor friends that own the others Husqvarna, Troy Built, Toro, Craftsman and I used them all before I made my decision on buying this mower. This one wins hands down!! I hope this review helps you with your decision, it is a honest review after a years worth of mowing.

I was a little reluctant to buy this model versus the other lower priced Hondas but am glad I did. Great product - does a fantastic job mulching even in damp grass. It is lighter and quieter than steel deck models and the mulch adjuster is a great feature. I keep the bag on all the time and when mulching if I run into an extra long patch of grass all I need to do set it to partial bagging to avoid potential clumping. It gives a beautiful, even cut and the mulch is so fine you can't tell it wasn't bagged.

You have to be real careful with changes because the mower will go much to fast or slow. After an hour of mowing, my thumbs hurt from pushing in the speed control activator. Poor engineering design of this feature. It should have been "reverse".

Yes is was easy to assemble & it did start on the first pull out of the box, & it does cut even. That lasted about 6 mows. The air filter cover comes off anytime I hit a bump, or sometimes for no reason at all. I now only have 3/4 of it, as it fell off & i ran it over. I now have a zip tie holding it on. Setting the rear wheel cut level takes some muscling. Horrible design, I'm 6' at 225lbs & I have a hard time every time I have to adjust. The one pull start advertised is a urban legend with this unit. Even after it's warmed up it takes 5 to 10 pulls & then once it is started it takes another min to idle at a consistent speed to be able to mow. And last, but not least it's a major event to get a replacement bag & frame. Home Depot didn't want to help me, told me to contact a Honda dealer, (I thought this to be them being they deal with Hondas) & I bought it from them. The earliest they or any other "dealer" could get me a bag & frame was over 7 days. I'm a landscaper, I don't have 7 days. I even asked if I could buy the bag & frame off of the floor model & I was was told no. Now today 2 weeks later I'm still trying to find a frame & bag to replace the one I lost. I hate this mower, I wish I had never bought it. 39 days & it already needs a new belt, airbox cover, & who knows what with the engine & the poor performance. I shopped Home Depot because I like to use PayPal, had I known they wouldn't back up a product sold in their store, I'd never had bought from them. My receipt says 90 days for a return, yet I asked just after around 20 days & I was told to call Honda. Yes I'm heated. I work hard for my money, handing $600 over for a piece of equipment that doesn't get the job done, or have easy access to replacement parts is a tough one to swallow. zero stars if I could for both Honda & Home Depot. thanks for sticking me with this thing. (the bag frame is a Unicorn I'm convinced)

Very easy to assemble, took me a minute to figure out how to put the bag onto it's frame though, other than that a piece of cake. And Yes, just like everyone else says, the Honda engine starts with the very first pull....Every time. I've always used a front wheel drive in other brands of mowers, and always thought that was the way to go, but let me tell You, I was Wrong! This rear wheel drive model does ALL the work, You just have to walk behind and steer it. Leaves the Cleanest cut You ever did see, the mulching blades do their job perfectly. If You're wondering if the speed of the mower will be fast enough for You, like I was, have no worries, You will be Pleasantly surprised at just the HALF speed mode. This Mower is truly a Fine Tuned Industrial Machine, & worth EVERY dollar of it's cost. The first time I used it, I didn't want to stop mowing, and almost went to my neighbor's yard. For Real!

This is the greatest self propelled mower of all time. It's better than any commercial small mower 21-33 inch. Huge bag, select between mulch and bag to get the ultimate mowing finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from i bought this mower to replace a really tired Lawn King mower. pulled it out of the box, assemble... i bought this mower to replace a really tired Lawn King mower. pulled it out of the box, assembled the grass bag to the metal frame, adjusted wheels to setting # 2, poured the supplied bottle of engine oil in the oil fill tube, put gas in the tank and pulled the starter rope lightly ONE TIME and this thing started up! we had a lot of rain last month so a bunch of weeds popped up but i was not able to mow them until now, and some weeds were 2.5' tall with 3/4" stumps! This mower totally devoured everything in its path leaving no trail of wet weed or grass clumps! the self propel will give you an aerobic work out when used at max speed, but adjusting the sensitivity knob made it very easy to control. this mower will COMPLETELY fill the grass catcher then start to pop wheelies. (maybe thats Hondas way to tell you its full) I could go on about how pleased i am with this mower, I am very satisfied and amazed at how effortless this machine worked to clear the yard! I thought $600.00 was a big price to pay for a mower, but the ease of use, Honda quality and this mowers brute performance proved to me that it was totally worth the money I paid for it! If I ever have to buy another mower, it will be another Honda!

While I was shopping, I was standing next to a landscaper who told me that this was the "Cadillac" of the lot. I bought it and there is nothing about this that disappoints. Apparently the two blade feature makes more of a difference than I realized. This picks up a lot more than the top of the line Toro I was replacing, holds more in the bag (I've only had to empty the bag twice per mowing vs. three times per mowing with my Toro), and doesn't clog like my old one. That last feature is the one that the landscaper sold me on, and he was right. I've only had it for a few weeks now, but have already had to use it in wet grass. I'm sold.
