CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 153 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by This should be an Acura, not a Honda! Wow, what a machine! The HRX217HZA is the top-of-the-line residential mower in Honda's lineup, and for good reason. If you like a smooth luxury car, then this is the mower for you. Coming from a 13 year old Honda Harmony HRB215, this is a huge step up. Power is plentiful, I have not run into any situations that might require a larger engine. The engine is super smooth and quiet. Whenever I hear a Briggs & Stratton powered mower start up in my neighborhood, it just sounds loud and cheap by comparison. The overhead cam Honda GCV190 is a peach. Great tone, not too loud, and never bogs down. The electric start feature on this model is a savior for my family. We have been blessed with bad backs, and the electric start allows us to mow without feeling the pain of manually starting the mower the entire time in the yard. And YES, this IS a self-charging unit! The 2013 models do not ship with a battery charger, as they have their own means of charging built in. Our mower came with a near-flat battery, so I just used an automotive 12V charger set to "2A - Small battery" and it charged it in a few hours. I don't anticipate having to top up the battery ever again, since it charges while I mow. The blade brake clutch, aka "Roto Stop" is a cool feature. With the electric start, it really isn't a necessary feature, but I love having it regardless. Being able to stop the blade and walk away with the mower idling is pretty cool, since I can take a quick water break and immediately start mowing again without having to start it again. As far as the self-propulsion goes, the hydrostatic transmission can shoot this mower up to 4mph. At full speed, this mower is quick, and if you can keep up, you can make very short work of your lawn. I have noticed that my Hydrostatic transmission does make a bit of a howling/grinding noise when engaged, but I haven't determined if this is normal operation or a flaw yet. When mowing, the large 9" wheels create a very smooth mowing experience. It powers through anything your lawn can dish out, and is very easy to maneuver. I've always liked the curve on Honda's mower handles - plus the fact that they're rear wheel drive. It makes engaging the drive wheels and turning the mower very easy. If you're considering a front drive mower, STOP! They can be cumbersome and require the front of the mower to be lifted on nearly every turn. Compared to my 13 year old HRB215, this HRX is very heavy. Over 100 pounds, if I remember correctly. You may notice this if you have to mow steep hills, or sidehills where the mower might start to slide down a bit. The drive wheels can push the mower up most inclines, but you do feel the weight of the mower a bit. This is likely due to the weight of the roto stop, starter motor, and battery combined. These "luxury" features do make a noticeable difference in mower weight. If you're looking for the best, look no further. This Honda has everything you could ever want in a mower and more. Rated 5 out of 5 by Great purchase! I bought this Honda to replace a 20 year old John Deere and have been more than pleased. Each of the features of this mower met or exceeded my expectations. Starts immediately, lighter than my old mower, mulches the grass finer than my old mower are but a few of the benefits. So far, it was worth every penny. June 23, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Top Quality This is the Rolls Royce of the residential Honda lawn mowers and it is worth the price. The mulching is excellent and the cut is sharp and even. The only shortcoming is engaging the blades: they don't always engage. By comparison, for 30 years I used the most expensive residential lawn mower John Deere sold (which came with a Kawasaki engine that was a dream). The mechanism for engaging the blades in the John Deere was easy to use and always engaged. Honda could have done better in this regard; nevertheless, I bet this machine ranks at the top of the bests in its category. Hence I give it a rating of excellent overall. August 20, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Starts every time I owned an older model (2004) which I gave to my son when I moved and bought this model because of the electric start. I do wish they would include a plug in charger for after winter storage, because I have bad rotator cups in my shoulders which make things hard to pull start. Also I Love my Troy Bilt weed cutter that has many different attachments and a hand held electric starter option. April 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent mower; love the electric start Replaced a 20+ year old Honda w/ the electric start self-propelled model. New mower cut great and I noticed a smoother more even cut. New mower is heavier than my old one, but it doesn't pose a problem. The electric start is great. Assembly was a snap; take it out of the box, lift the handle into place, add supplied oil and my NEW gas, turn the key and I was up and running. Read lots of cautions about only using fresh unleaded gas ( less than 30 days old) due to carburetor fouling. Recommend buy gas and use for a month and then pour excess into car tank. Also follow recommendation to "purge" gas line at end of the season. June 18, 2014
