Answer:
Yes, the drive is activated on a separate bar than the blade and since the mower can idle without the blade turning you can drive it around under power without the blade turning which is nice.

Answer:
Good question Becky. Some mowers won't even run if you let go of the drive handle. With my Honda, I simply let go of the blade control, squeeze the transmission handle and drive it. Handy if I have lawn tools and a bag full of grass. I put them on the mower and it hauls them for me.

Answer:
Yes. When you start just do not push the yellow button on the hand control. This will allow you to run the self propelled function of the mower without running the blades. This function is perfect if you are moving from one area of the yard to another and must cross a landscaped area where you do want to run the mower blades.

Answer:
Yes, the transmission works with or without the blades turning. This is an excellent mower, well made and built for simplicity. I highly recommend it. I especially like the mulching feature because you do not have to use bags or carry off clippings. But you can always bag your clippings if you would rather do that. I think Honda has a video of this on their website.

Yes, one is not to press the second lever with the yellow button. Pressing only on the lever closest to operator; It will propel/travel without engaging the blade. I routinely use this method to travel front to backyard.

Yes it does come with a battery pack bolted to the handle bars but you sometimes have to hand start it the first time and run it for a hour to charge the battery. There's no way to hook up a charger to it.

Yes. When not in use for an extended period (i.e. winter), my suggestion is to disconnect battery. You can do this by snapping open (pull) the cover door and pull the plug from the battery. By doing this, you will not have to recharge or replace the battery, at least as often as you would if you didn't. Hope it helps.

Yes. You can even adjust the proportion of clippings going back on the lawn vs. in tha bag with the variable discharge lever. For heavy grass you can put more in the bag to avoid clumping on the lawn. For normal or light grass you can put it all back on the lawn. It's up to you.

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 216 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Honda mowwer Had previously owned the HXA model for 11 years and was extremely satisfied with it. Purchased this model the HZA which is basically identical but has the electric start. Would recommend the Honda mowers as they are very reliable and simple to use and upkeep! May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easiest hand mower I have ever had! Opened the box, connected the handle, added the oil and started it. I really like the feature of NOT having the blades turning when I am moving from one lawn to the next. I had another brand mower that I needed to empty the basket three times per lawn. Now, I only need to empty the basket once per lawn and the basket comes off and goes back on very easily. The variable speed drive wheels should be standard on all mowers. This really is the easiest hand mower I have ever had! Well worth every penny! May 12, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Honda 21" electric start mower This mower is a beast, it will bag mulch and start on the first try everytime. The bag works well, the nexite deck stays clean underneath even in wet conditions. Im a 6 ft 1" 220 lb guy and this mower is extremely heavy. I caution anyone who has to mow under or around alot of obstacles. The mower itself performs flawlessly. Self propel an blade engagment work good. June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Honda HRX217HZA New mower Replacing a honda that is 10 years old Wife has pains in her shoulders pull starting the old mower so opted for the electric start We were concerned about the additional weight of the mower verses the old mower We were surprised that the new mower was easier to manuver and felt lighter than the old Electeic start is great Also not having to constantly start the engine when releasing the handle for the engine, only the blades disengage and the engine runs Only mowed yard once so far; excellent cut on a few inches of grass Look forward to manu years of use Most info online did not do this mower justice Would recomend rhis mower to anyone who has a 1/4 acre suburban lot May 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Don't second guess yourself. I have a bad habit of going cheap, and then making due with the quality of the item I purchased. I replaced my dad's 20 year old Honda I inherited with a top of the line Craftsman that was marked way down. The Craftsman gave me 5 or 6 years of decent service, but little things began wearing out and breaking almost from year one. I bit the bullet this year and bought the best Honda had to offer. After a couple months I'm completely satisfied. The quality is unmatched by any mower I've ever used, including dads old Honda. The 190 engine doesn't care if the grass is wet or dry. The solidity of the wheels, deck and handles are reassuring. The electric start is not really necessary right now, as it starts with one pull, and no need to shut it off before finishing. But who knows ten or twenty years from now. I may need it. My best advise is buy the best model you can afford, as long as it's a Honda with the 190 engine. June 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mower Best mower i have ever owned. I would recommend this product to everyone. I cuts and mulches great! June 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Lawnmower!!! Arrived on time, easy to assemble. Came with oil and battery had sufficient charge to enable it to start on first try. Easy to operate. Manual had very useful recommendations for use of ethanol gas....time will tell. Been using for almost 2 months and loving it! May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Mower Easy to start and operate cuts grass excellent overall very happy with the mower. June 7, 2016
