Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by NTP66 The best lawnmower I have ever owned
You get what you pay for when it comes to Honda, and this lawnmower is no exception. I grew up with Briggs & Stratton-powered Craftsman lawnmowers my entire life, but when my 4-year old mower died on me, I decided to upgrade to the Honda. I now wish I went with this from the start.
NeXite mowing deck: This is the best feature of the mower, and it alone makes it worth the price. This polymer-based deck means that it'll never dent, rust or corrode, comes with a lifetime warranty, and best of all, grass - wet or dry - just slides right off it. Most of the time, grass doesn't even stick to the deck, but if I mow a lawn that is probably a little too wet for other mowers, it takes seconds to just clear the grass. It's outstanding. On top of that, you can really tell how much vacuum this deck helps generate, as I can easily pull leaves from the side of the mower into the deck to be mulched.
Engine: The 190cc engine starts up on the first pull, every single time, and is smooth as glass. It's got enough power to handle overgrown, wet grass with ease, and is surprisingly quiet for the size of the engine. I noticed no increase in noise compared to the smaller 163cc B&S engine on my previous lawnmower.
Select Drive: I actually had no interest in the self-propelled aspect of the mower, but I have to admit that this system functions much better than ones I've used in the past. You use the dial to set the speed, and the more you push down on the bar, the faster it'll go. The variable speed control is excellent, and I find myself using it most when starting up an incline to get it going.
4-in-1 Versamow System: This is one of my favorite features. You can switch from mulching to bagging - and any setting in between - using a single handle located at the rear of the mower. The fact that this is a rear-discharge mower means I no longer have to worry about blowing grass clippings onto my patio or garden when I mow around it. Bagging the grass is easy, as well, and Honda's bag is larger than most, so you won't have to change it as frequently.
Blades and the rest: The twin-blade system mulches incredibly well, and you'll be able to tell the difference after the first mow. The mulch is finer, and if you're bagging, you'll notice that it'll help you go further between bag changes. Another feature that I love is that it has a fuel shut-off valve, which helps with maintenance and longevity. While using something like STA-BIL is essential when you store your motor, if you utilize the shutoff and keep gas out of the carb, you greatly decrease the chances of a jet in the carb becoming clogged.

I have had this mower now for 5 years. Yes it STILL starts on the first pull. It takes very little effort. I am amazed at how well it mulches. I don't see any clippings. I only use the bagger about twice a year. Mostly for leaves. It could stand to be bigger. The deck has not clogged yet, and the grass does not stick to it. Very powerful. I occasionally mow down weeds with it, with hardly an effort. The thumb drive may not be for everyone as it requires just a bit of thumb strength, although I like it. only one con that I can think of. That being the rear wheel height adjustment. Very flimsy.

I bought the mower reluctantly due to its price. I have used it now for 3 years and the mower has worked flawlessly. I've used it on steep inclines as well as flat surfaces in both bagging and mulch mode. All operational and mechanical properties have operated as expected. Always has started on the first or second pull. Only comment I can make, there's no way to run the mower in the normal cutting mode ( non-mulching) without the grass catcher since the discharge is in the rear. Still a 5 star!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dmitriy Multiple quality problems at 4 months old
Terrible engineering and quality. Bought one at the start of the 2015 season. Fist one of the wheels falls off. The nut rotates in the same direction as the wheel and screws off. I thought in the space age engineers learned how to deal with this. Second, air filter cover hinges are too short. The air filter pops open at the slightest touch. After one of those occurrences, the engine quit and would not start. Took it to a dealer (under warranty). They charged me for an air filter cleaning and got the engine to start. But the engine would not run as well now as it did when new. (this is a machine that was at the time four months old). It takes 5 to 6 pulls in rapid succession to start. (This Honda gives you a clean lawn and a workout – all in one. ) The engine runs rough and with low power. It surges, shuts off when it comes across a rough patch of grass, etc. I used to run after this mower (self propelled). Now, the engine is so weak that I have to push it. The dealer can’t do anything else about it. I would have expected these quality problems from a $200 no-name machine. I guess the Honda name gets you the $600 price tag, but not the quality.

WOW!! This is an incredible mower! Granted it's brand new but I have broke it in with some of the most difficult grass for a push mower to tackle. Imagine 12-28 inch tall early morning wet grass. As expected, on occasion I had to stop the mower and clean out the discharge port but other than that this thing made an even cut flawlessly. From the very first tank of gas it has started with only one easy pull of the cord. I am quite impressed so far. I am curious to see how well it does after mowing two acres all season. One thing I do know for sure is that the Honda HRX217VKA is off to an incredible start.

Very little assembly. Was ready to go out of the box. Just had to add oil (provided in box) and gas, and with one pull the mower was ready to go. Worked great even on wet grass. I bought this based on recommendations from friends on the quality of Honda mowers. I expect this mower to last 10+ years as theirs did. The only con I can say is the price. It's a little on the expensive side. I wouldn't say it's necessarily over priced, because it's a quality product. I just would like to see the price come down a little more since it does not have the blade-stop feature.

An excellent lawn mower. Had a Toro, and did not last, so went to the Honda. Very glad I made the switch. There is no comparison. The Honda is superior in every way. Easy to use with the variable touch speed control. If your lawn is flat, you may not use it all the time as the large wheels on the mower make it easy to push. Cutting and grass pick up by the bag is excellent. You will enjoy using this Honda model. I would have purchased the next model up with the electric start, but the store does not carry that model.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by phpbutcher Nice features and great lawn mower
I have only used this once but I have to say I was really impressed with it right out of the box. It's nicely designed and all the controls are very easy to use. I was also surprised at how easy it is to navigate because the deck is so light. My main concern was how it would mulch because I hate dealing with clippings and it did a beautiful job. I didn't notice one clipping on the lawn when I was done. The other thing that's really nice about mulching with this mower is that you don't even have to take the bag off, or stick another piece in to block the output hole. The self propelled part was easy to use and run at whatever speed you were comfortable with. It would even go faster than I wanted to if I pushed all the way down.
