Very little assembly. Was ready to go out of the box. Just had to add oil (provided in box) and gas, and with one pull the mower was ready to go. Worked great even on wet grass. I bought this based on recommendations from friends on the quality of Honda mowers. I expect this mower to last 10+ years as theirs did. The only con I can say is the price. It's a little on the expensive side. I wouldn't say it's necessarily over priced, because it's a quality product. I just would like to see the price come down a little more since it does not have the blade-stop feature.

An excellent lawn mower. Had a Toro, and did not last, so went to the Honda. Very glad I made the switch. There is no comparison. The Honda is superior in every way. Easy to use with the variable touch speed control. If your lawn is flat, you may not use it all the time as the large wheels on the mower make it easy to push. Cutting and grass pick up by the bag is excellent. You will enjoy using this Honda model. I would have purchased the next model up with the electric start, but the store does not carry that model.

I spent several day online , looking at reviews and to make a long story short this mower was on top of its game. I am very Picky and I built High tech equipment, and turbines so I know about high end equipment and what it should look like this model I should have bought sooner ! I cut 2ft tall grass right out of the box ran like a beast. no lack of power, great on fuel low DB! starts ver well when hot also just FYI. If there is any problems its operator malfunction..lol

Excellent mower! The smart drive control is convenient, easy to use and the self propel system is smooth and powerful. Handlebar easily adjusts and can be folded down for storage in seconds. Starts first pull every time and engine is powerful enough to make full passes through thick 6-7 inch grass. I bag all my clippings and it left not one behind and the bigger bag and smaller mulched clippings cut how many times I needed to stop and dump them in half. For how big this mower is I found it surprisingly easy to maneuver. The mower does all the work you just need to make sure it stays straight, don't know why I waited so long.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Samir Honda Lawnmower
I have only used this twice and it is bigger, heavier, and wider than what i had before. It cuts the grass in very small chunks compared to what i owned before which was a John Deere with a Briggs and Stratton engine. This allows me to cut the back and front of the house without having to empty the bag at least twice and sometimes 4 times. I can cut the grass when it is partially wet which was a nightmare to do with the previous lawnmower. So far so Good and hopefully it will stay that way. This is a very expensive lawnmower compared to what I owned before but if it can cut my time it will be worth it in the long run

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by USA1169 So far it lives up to all the great reviews
A bunch of different sites gave this machine the top reviews so I went for it. Three mowings in I can say it is an awesome machine. Starts on one pull, cuts like velvet in mulch mode without the bag which is how I like to mow. I was going to go for an unpowered push mower (my yard is about 6,000sf with lots of different shapes) but I love the power drive. Really smooth and easy to regulate. We will see if it holds up. And it is light enough without the bag to pull backwards and spin by hand easily.
My only complaint is the height adjustment levers on the back are hard to get to around the handle. But that is not a big deal since I rarely change. Also it took too long to ship, pick it up at a store.
Buy one, it is actually worth the $ out of the box. If it lasts as long as it is supposed to it will be a good value.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bruin Great Choice!
Written for those who have chosen Honda but don't know which one. My choices were down to two mowers with the larger CVC190 engine, the HRX217VKA @ $599 or the HRX217HYA @$729. The only major difference in features on the more expensive model is the roto-blade stop which stops the blade but allows the engine to continue running while you bag the grass and a "cruise control" transmission that you set with a lever on the left side of the handle. I chose the HRX217VKA and do not regret the choice. The auto choke feature allows the engine to start with one or two pulls. It runs a little rough for a while but maintains a constant engine speed for cutting when it has warmed up - there is no throttle. The Smart Drive is not well explained in the literature but it is great! There is a dial that you set for the speed and you pull the Smart Drive until it is even with the mower handle.. At first the mower will move forward faster than you expect until you get the settings figured out. What the literature does not explain well is the fact that the Smart Drive allows you to change the speed from full stop to full forward set by the dial and any anywhere in between by how much you pull the Smart Drive handle. Like having an accelerator in your hands the only difference is the engine runs at a constant speed the transmission is what varies the speed. The adjustable discharge chute on all new Honda mowers is a great feature that allows you to partially bag and mulch by adjusting the chute. I normally mulch but by partially bagging it eliminates the clumps of grass when mulching tall grass. No more plugs required when I mulch.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Greeneye You get what you pay for.
I bought this mower about 3 years ago and it has never given me a day of problems. I used to buy Toros, but they simply didn't last very long . Easy to start, solid construction, mulches even the thick grass, and has several speeds to match your pace. You can never go wrong with a Honda. If this mower ever breaks, I would buy another Honda without hesitation.
