I am placing this between 2 trees. The 20' one is too short. I need 24'. So I am looking at the 40' one and want to know if it will "stop" or "set" or "lock into place" at 24'. Or will it just keep coming out till it is at the 40' length ?

Yes, you extend it to the required length than make a wrap around the tabs and it will stay that long.

Thank you for your question. The base of this unit mounts to a wall and has a retractable end that can be attached up to 40 feet away. There is no mechanism to lock the retractable end in place at set distances. Thank you for your interest in Honey-Can-Do.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Laundryroom device This device was easily installed .Product does its job very well. The locking device is oversold. It merely an attachment that you wrap the line around. its held taught by friction. September 23, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Doesnt function well Line used is too "stretchy". Wet clothes cause it to stretch and lengthen thereby causing the clothes to slide together and then they don't dry. August 2, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Doesn't lock Unless you have 40 feet to stretch this too there is no way to lock it into place, the moment you hang your clothes the weight causes the line to fall...I would have done better to just but line and stretch it between two eye bolts, I wanted something retractable and this is but it does not lock any slack line...won't be buying again needless to say June 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works, Compact, Easy Install Easy to install and came with the hardware to do so. Installed Retractable Clothesline to garage, so I screwed a 4" x 2" x 3/4" cedar board with longer screws to properly anchor, then attached Clothesline to the board using the included screws. Attached included i-hook to fence post about 33 feet from garage. I use it to dry cloth diapers, which are about 15 - 16" x 18", soaking wet, heavy towels basically and it does sag some, but still very happy with product. Only a handful of uses but still retracts great. July 27, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Clothes line does not lock The clothes lines does not lock so if you are not using the full 40 length of the line you will need poles to hold the line off the ground. April 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good purchase Good product it is compact and durable. It fits the requirement October 13, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Had to return. When I hung it, I noticed the line was much thinner than the old one I was replacing. Therefore there was too much sag when hanging things like wet sheets. Could not get it tight enough due to the thin cable stretching. June 30, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Easily broken I used this line twice before it broke. The thin cable snapped with the weight of the cloths. Even before it snapped, the cable stretched so much that the cloths touched the ground. I love the idea of a retractible line, but this cable is totally insufficient. March 14, 2015
