Been running this for 2 months now in my living room. I've replaced the pre-filter last night due to dust buildup. cleaned the filter since I had it all turned off and unplugged...
I know there is a static charge on the filter. That HURT.
Filter, however, is rather clean. I rinse this out in a large glass bowl of clean water. Water is still seems quite clean after the rinse. So I sprayed it out with the garden hose nozzle. I'm still not seeing any difference in the media (color, attached grime, anything) so I have to assume it didn't actually grab anything. There is a very fine layer of dust on the exhaust vents of the unit, and if I make the mistake of falling alseep in the living room overnight with the filter running, I wake up in the morning and my mouth is covered in a disgusting film of particles that I have to scrape off, and my throat is so dry and painful as to make me think I'm getting sick.. Not kidding. If I turn the filter off for the night, there isn't any issue. It only happens when the filter is running.
The charcoal pre-filter seems to due a decent job of clearing cooking odors in about 40 minutes to an hour after cooking is done, and stops a generous portion of dust from entering the unit, but the main filter doesn't seem to capture anything. My furnace filter gets changed monthly and ist still just as gray and dirty as it used to be. I'd hoped that by running this filter in the space we use most (living room/dining room) that my furnace filters would end up lasting longer, and in turn the air in the entire 2500SqFt house would overall be cleaner because of it. It appears that my choice of filter is too blame.
Other issues: Seems a bit top heavy and easy to knock over. Touch controls are a bit sensitive & "touchy". It is a slight bit loud on settings 4 and 5 (have to turn the TV up a couple notches). Can't say that it is reducing allergens at all (neither of us noticed an improvement with that).
Too late to return it to the store, so I guess I'm out three hundred, and I have to look for a new filter.
My advice to people looking for air purifiers: Avoid the term "HEPA-like" and get a real HEPA filter isntead. Yes you'll have to buy new filter cartridges and put themin every few months, but at least those will actually clean the air going through them.

Overall, the product helped clear runny noses. Help improve odors in home. Not sure on the bacteria part so far. It works great for large rooms. It isn't silent, but has slight sound similar to a low low setting on a fan.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by jstine35 Bought this as a Christmas gift
I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my mother. She has two large dogs and smokes, so I knew she would need something "hefty". When she first plugged the unit in, she got an awful smell from it that made her feel sick. She unplugged it and the smell went away. She tried again later and the same thing happened. She called Home Depot and they told her to bring the unit in to exchange it for a different one. The new one that she received seems to be working very well. There is no smell when she turns it on. She seems to be happy with it so far.

I am very well pleased with the air cleaner. I have dogs in my house and with the air cleaner running in the main living area, one cannot tell that the dogs are in the house.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by FrustratedOne If your a smoker, steer clear of this.
Well, bought this in the Chicago area, so paid $300 for it out the door.
Wish people who smoked reviewed this or at least people with fire places. For the first day, it seemed to do what I'd hoped for, make the apartment air fresher. Then after about a week, my wife and I noticed that walls in our entire living room, dining room and kitchen now have a light grey tint to them. As does our white painted butcher block top cabinets, table, chairs and island. Also our stove and refrigerator. Now if you run your finger on any surface, it will be black afterward.
Not to mention, the "washable" filter doesn't rinse out at all. Tried many cleaning solutions, pressurized water, soaking... entire media is black and the air coming out of it doesn't seem an cleaner than the air going into it.
Now we need to clean every single surface in our entire house and will probably need to repaint as there are many stories on line stating how nearly impossible it is to get walls clean after something like this has happened. The best you can do is clean it with something aggressive to remove as much smoke residue as possible and then prime/paint over it.
We have since unplugged this thing (and the smaller version we bought for the office) and replaced them with a true hepa paper type forced air filter.
So, my $300 "genius" purchase has cost me $600 so far and I haven't even bought all the items it's going to take cleaning and repainting!
If you have allergies, don't smoke and don't have a fireplace, then give this a shot. It is pretty quiet on it's medium setting while moving quite a bit of air, nearly inaudible at it's lowest setting.
