Answer:
Turn a faucet on as little as you can for a steady flow. That's about it. When I was on city water I saw no difference in my bill. That makes sense as the unit only uses water when the furnace fan is running, not at all in the summer and none when the hunidistat setting has been reached.
Taking a wild guess, maybe a gallon or so every 24 hrs? It's not much. The feed is just a 1/4" tube.

When energized, the solenoid valve in the Honeywell HE280 has a maximum capacity of 6.86 gallons per hour, at a maximum water pressure of 120 psi. To save water during a call for humidity, the HE280 control board cycles the valve open for 104 seconds and closed for 53 seconds.

Hi StanDIY, I found out there is a paper template that comes with this unit for installation.
I contacted Honeywell to get the dimensions. The best I could get from Honeywell for this model is 9.88" inches by 12.75 inches.

Answer:
If you're not comfortable with cutting holes in your ductwork or making water tight plumbing connections then you probably want a pro to do this. If you're pretty good with tools and have some experience with HVAC then go ahead. It's not rocket science, but needs to be done exactly according to the instructions. I've built houses before and this took me a long afternoon.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 17 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product! We had an existing Honeywell humidifier on the furnace that stopped working (10 years old) instead of troubleshooting it was easier to buy a new one instead. The cutouts on the sheet metal were already there so that probably saved me an hour of measuring and cutting. Installation went very smoothly, parts are well laid out in individual bags. Easy to wire (the old one had to be wired to the furnace, this one is powered by a plug in AC pack). It was up and running in about 2 hours. Just make sure to double-check your connection on the water saddle valve and DO NOT over tighten (hand tight plus a 1/4 to 1/2 turn with a wrench.) Watch the the Honeywell installation video on YouTube, it's a huge help! Made a big difference in the air in our house, much more comfortable! February 29, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works perfectly Installation is time consuming but not difficult. Installed on the return side, connected to hot water, drained with a pump. My target moisture levels in a 3,000sqf home were achieved just a few days after startup. March 4, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Life Saver!! With nose bleeds, static, shocks when touching anything, this thing will change your life. With the turn of a dial, you can set your comfort level right where you want it. January 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by dont purchase this product You would think that they would sell filters for these. Nope, the filters are nit sold in stores and are no longer available on line. November 30, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very satisfied! I have forced hot air heat in my house and it is very dry in the winter. I had been running 2 humidifiers but they are loud and didn't quite work as well. I had heard a lot of pros and cons of running and inline unit like this. I got a price to have one installed and it was upwards of $600. So I did some research and found an installation video from Honeywell on You Tube. I decided to buy it and install it myself. It took about three hours. I would watch the video on my phone and check the installation instructions that came with the unit to make sure I was installing it correctly. Then perform the step. It's very easy to install and I know nothing about HVAC. I saved a lot of $ money doing it myself. Although my house is under 2000 sg. ft. I bought the larger unit. My humidity level in my house is now consistently 40-45%. You can feel the difference especially while sleeping. It's great! November 3, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by BONUS !! It Comes with 1000$ in Extra Charges I bought the TrueEase 150. I live few block away from Honeywell headquarters in MN so I thought I’ll support local company . This unit seemed to fit my needs. This was headache right from the start. From slow leaks by solenoid valve to inconsistent humidity and it breaks. Honeywell is a a company that is ignores non professional installers, so after spending $200+ on humidifier you will need to call a professional to install it , which cost about $500.They will not honor anything installed by homeowner. The instruction are not for DIY’er they are simply horrible. The instructions are very ambiguous - especially when it comes to wiring and DIP switch and programming humidistat. The instructions are written by some technical engineers that have should quit in 80’s. This is humidifier should be a simple device and be user friendly. I shouldn’t have to be looking every time at the manual to adjust humidity settings. All of the humidistat setting are codes not words so i.e. humidity is 4 , upper humidity is 20 etc etc you get my point. One of the biggest disappointments disappointments was when I discovered how much water this thing is using - the 12 gal/day claim are perhaps Honeywell hopes. The water is pouring and pouring and pouring. I have it discharging the water to floor drain but I decided to see how fast it will fill up 5gal bucket - it was full in less than two hours. My humidifier was set to 35% and we are talking about smaller 3-bedroom house. I looked at my water bill and my usage had risen about 800-1000 gal a month when I’m using humidifier!!! After two years the circuit board stopped working. I called Honeywell twice and they wont honor the 5yr warranty until it is a contractor that makes the call and orders. I have degree in electrical engineering and I know how to troubleshoot the electrical connections. So in essence I need to call a contractor that will charge me at least $150 to tell them that the circuit board is fried and then once the part is in another 150 to put it in. Mind you this whole new unit costs around $200. I bought the part for 35$ online and it works …for now- But certainly this is last Honeywell product I bought. Be aware of huge additional costs Big disappointment with the whole unit and Honeywell customer service is a joke. Stay away! December 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Keeps the whole house comfortable This was a replacement for the non-water saving model, and was installed after replacing the entire HVAC system. The old model used an exorbitant amount of water and still couldn't keep the humidity level up. This model only runs a trickle of water and keeps the humidity at a steady 40 percent. Installation was very simple (easier than the first, since it used the same hole cut in the air duct). I can't understand why Honeywell (and Home Depot) still carry two models when this one works great and the other hardly works at all. This water saving version is definitely the one to buy whether you care about your water bill or not. December 27, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Install and Works Great I own my own Home Improvement Company and have installed these in customer homes and decided to finally install one in my own home. Our 2 year old son was coughing nonstop at night in the winter with the dry winter air and we had a humidifier in his room. We have a 3000 square foot home and after a few days of the installation our sons cough has stopped and have noticed a considerable difference in air quality. Has been in for about a month now and can't believe I waited this long to get one! Installation took about 3 hours and most of that was getting a new electrical outlet close to the furnace..
