Answer:
Turn a faucet on as little as you can for a steady flow. That's about it. When I was on city water I saw no difference in my bill. That makes sense as the unit only uses water when the furnace fan is running, not at all in the summer and none when the hunidistat setting has been reached.
Taking a wild guess, maybe a gallon or so every 24 hrs? It's not much. The feed is just a 1/4" tube.

Hi StanDIY, I found out there is a paper template that comes with this unit for installation.
I contacted Honeywell to get the dimensions. The best I could get from Honeywell for this model is 9.88" inches by 12.75 inches.

Answer:
If you're not comfortable with cutting holes in your ductwork or making water tight plumbing connections then you probably want a pro to do this. If you're pretty good with tools and have some experience with HVAC then go ahead. It's not rocket science, but needs to be done exactly according to the instructions. I've built houses before and this took me a long afternoon.

By-Pass Flow-Through Humidifier with Water Savings is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from I got a nearly empty box! Nearly all parts missing! I don't normally give bad reviews but I am really shocked. The box does not appear to have been opened. It appears to be factory packed but nearly everything is missing and of course Home Depot closed early today. Here is a list of missing parts. 1) Thermostat wire 2) Feed water tubing 3) Saddle Valve assembly 4) Transformer 5) Accessory Bag 6) Humidifier pad Basically I got an empty plastic shell , a paper mounting template, and some flexiblend ducting. If you buy one of these items I strongly recommend opening it and checking parts before you leave the store. Quality control appears to be non existent!

I had water pouring out of the back - poor quality connector. Directions average at best. Install video helpful, however lacks detail. They provide a whopping 20' of thermostat wire. 6" dryer vent instead of 6" flexible duct for the bypass. With better quality, this could be a product worthy of your investment. I have mine turned off for the moment and am presently on hold with Honeywell. We'll see where that goes. Suprised Home Depot would sell something so poorly made.

There have been no problems with operation. Installation was easy if you have done several DIY projects. Honeywell claims that it can humidify a 3000 square foot house. This is not true. I had to buy another humidifier for our second floor. Because of the high price and false claim, I cannot recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great do-it-yourself product The product was really easy to install with everything you need, obviously except tools, in the box. Make sure to read the box carefully before you purchase to make sure you have the clearance needed for installation. I am very handy and the entire job took about two hours to complete due to the directions being very easy to follow. I truly believe that anyone could install this product. I live in Michigan and when the temperature drops, the heat comes on and the house dries out. Once having the humidifier installed, there was a clear difference in my house by the next morning.
