We have a boat that has a cabin and something is eating us up at night. I believe it is the 'No See Ums' but can't be sure because well .... I can't see um. Can I use the pest strip in that small a space with packaged food and is it safe for my family to sleep overnight with the strip?

The official answer, from either Home Depot or Hot Shot, is always going to be what the label says, which is that it can't ever be used in a space occupied by a human being (or pet) for more than four hours a day. They HAVE to say that, because that's what the label says.
But the REAL answer, as hundreds of actual USERS of the product have said here and anywhere else you look, is that it's perfectly safe around people, pets, food, etc, and we have been using it 24 hours a day every day, where we eat, sleep, and live, for decades with absolutely no harmful effects at all.
So if you're the paranoid type, and you're looking for something new to be afraid of, then follow the canned "expert" answer and remove the strip several days before you enter the room. But if you're mostly sane and want to enjoy the amazing effectiveness of this amazing product, ignore the experts and the label and fill your house with these strips.
I live in the edge of a forest in a 60+ year-old frame house. My house was FULL of spiders, ants, clothes moths, and lots of other creeping things, including the horrible brown Asian stink bugs that are unstoppable in their drive to overrun North America. A few years ago, having tried EVERYTHING else with no success, I remembered the Shell No-Pest Strips from my childhood and found to my amazement that they're still around, now made by Hot Shot.
I ordered a case of 12 and hung them (conservatively, at first, following the overly cautious instructions as well as I could), mostly in my basement but also in a few locations upstairs where I and my cat don't spend a lot of time. In less than a week, ALL of the bugs were gone from those areas. I was so grateful and delighted that I ordered another dozen and put them everywhere, and my house has been full of the strips and totally free of bugs ever since.
I maintain a stock of several dozen of these things because I won't live without them, but I'm afraid that at some point the toxophobes who delight in ruining other people's lives will succeed in their so far unsuccessful (in the US at least) drive to have them banned, as they are already in Europe.
They're not cheap, but they work like nothing else, and I wouldn't ever give them up, no matter what the EPA or some phobic neurotic said. If they ever are banned, I will look for an overseas source somewhere (India, maybe?) and get them wherever I can get them. That's how much I love and trust this wonderful product. Read Less

Yes & No. It may be OK to leave these strips near sealed food containers, but the instructions say not to use in everyday living spaces. If I were you I would put one or two of these in your boat cabin, close the doors & windows and leave the cabin for 24 to 48 hours. After that the bugs should be dead. Air out the cabin and for a few hours after that and you should be good to go.

Answer:
Hi Stephanie. You can absolutely use Hot Shot No-Pest Strip in a boat cabin, but not while it's occupied. Use the strip for a week or two before you plan to use the boat, then plan to ventilate the boat cabin for a couple of hours before you use it. To be safe, we recommend removing all food from treatment areas before using this strip.

Boat cabins are specifically mentioned, in that these pest strips are NOT to be placed in cabins that will be occupied in the next 4 months.
I recommend placing sticky traps near a light source, such as a nite-light to attract the bugs and capture them without poisons.

To get rid of the bedbugs fast, you should put a couple of the strips with the mattress inside something airtight like an all-around zip-on plastic mattress cover, but if you just have a strip hanging in the room where the bedbugs live they'll die before the strip loses its punch in a few months.
That's because the insecticide permeates the air, and any creature susceptible to it is going to breathe that air and die, even if it's hiding inside a baseboard or a mattress seam. Read Less

I would say no, they really shouldn't be used in your bedroom or a confined area like that. You need something more specific for bedbugs, these are hung in a room for flies and such, they won't kill spiders or other crawlers.

they will work but you cant be around them they make bugs start doing back flips to get away . it kills better in a confined space so if you hang it on an outside door you will wake up to some dead bugs but its not near as effective because of too much air flow.

Answer:
Hello katjo,
This product is designed to be used in enclosed areas were there will be little to no foot traffic for an extended period of time. A better solution would be to use a product like flytraps and or strips. These could be secured out of the way of the cats and should help eliminate the flies. I hope this helps.

That's because the insecticide permeates the air, and any creature susceptible to it (all insects, spiders, etc) is going to breathe that air and die, even if it's hiding inside a baseboard or a sweater or a mattress seam. How long it takes will depend on how large your space is, how much ventilation it has (the less the better, in this case), and how many of these strips you hang in that space. The more you hang and the less you ventilate the space, the quicker you'll be bug-free. Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by best flying bug killer I have been using this product for years. We were infested with meal moths out of a package of cereal and they kept coming back. I hang this no pest strip and they were gone within a few days and never came back. March 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not for use in occupied areas I bought this to kill flies that gather inside our family room windows. The instructions on the package tell users not to use it near windows or in occupied areas of house. Wish the sales person had told me this. I'm returning it. March 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Recommended by our Pest Control technician We have a section of our building with standing water outside, and we could never get rid of mosquitoes which were frustrating workers. Nobody liked the bug spray smell, and after talking with our pest control technician, he recommended these strips. We placed it in a corner on a Friday, and by Monday the complaints stopped & haven't heard about smells or annoyances. It doesn't get any simpler, just open and hang where needed! July 28, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by craw space no pest insurance. Use this product 4 times a year in my out buildings and in my craw space. Has really done a fine job these last few years. Thanks December 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by FANTASTIC!!! This was my 2nd method in attempts to eliminate a terrible infestation of small moths in our house - Within 3 days of exposure, the remaining little pests numbered less than 5 per night, from 20...this 20 was after exhaustive cleaning, and elimination of the probable sources. Its now almost 2 wks, and it appears that all have been eliminated, esp. any new adults from larvae that was existent at the start of this experiment - which is the true test of the pesticide. Will leave the strips near all "hot spots" until the efficacy is gone (4 mths, per directions). Am soooo relieved...EXCELLENT! Go "Hot Shot" - now my favorite brand for pest control, and Home Depot! :) September 14, 2015
