Hi Dan,
I am happy to help. We do not recommend turning the burners on unless there is a pot or pan on the cooking surface. If you prefer front controls you may want to consider a slide in range. We appreciate you checking with us.

Hi Larry- This is Sue at GE Appliances. Thanks for your purchase! We are sorry to hear of the difficulty with installation. We do not provide the wiring size or gauge (the physical thickness of the wire) for those trying to wire their house for any cooking appliance. There are too many variables involved, such as: length, type of wire, etc. This is a safety issue; if the wrong size wire is used, the insulation covering the wire can overheat, melt and cause a fire. Local electrical codes must always be followed for these situations. Please contact a local licensed electrician for more detailed information. Freestanding and slide-in ranges that use a power cord use 3 or 4 wire. New construction requires 4 wire hookup. GE uses all copper wires, there is however a light coating of Tin covering the wire. This gives the appearance of aluminum wiring and prevents the copper from oxidizing. Thanks for checking with us! Read Less

Answer:
I don't find that it gets hot. The only heat (on all electric stoves) comes from the small back burner on the right. I lay utensils in the middle and they are never warm.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 56 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Simple, clean looking, nice big oven & 2 big burners October 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good value for a quality stove This is a great stove for a rental property. Simple controls, no complicated circuit boards to replace. September 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product for the Price Replaced my broken oven (had to use a counter top oven for a year) with this model. I was thrilled to be able to cook in an oven that was full sized instead of my counter one. This oven may not be the highest tech version, but I prefer the ease of use with this model. Especially since my previous one had the control panel blown and would have cost more to repair than to replace. This oven has worked very well, cooks evenly and the oven light is bright enough for me to check the food without losing heat by opening the door. My only issue is that I wish it came with three racks instead of two and it needs to have an oven pan issued with it. Good thing I kept my old one. October 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good = no electronic panel in top to corrode over time Last stove would come on and off when top electronic push button switch panel was slowly failing with corrosion/heat/crazy ants crawling/ etc. I am extremely happy to not have an electronic panel giving me unreliability and frustration not knowing if it would come on and then if it would stay on. I am also happy to not have the self cleaning function which we only used once in about 7 years for our last stove due to the furnace heat needed to clean and then filling the house and probably helping to destroy the electronic controls in the prior stove with the extreme heat penetrating the stove and reaching to wiring in the control unit.(I bet hardly anyone uses the self cleaning function of a stove anyway after they try it once, due to the increased heat required) Thanks Hotpoint for the simplicity, reliability, and cheaper price. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by No regrets I really do love my new range. I did not want something with a lot of fancy features, just a basic stove and oven that looks good, and this does. One or more of the reviews complained about the bottom drawer, so I was a little worried about that, but mine works like a dream, and it is roomier than my last old Hotpoint range. I think one person said you couldn't open it while you were cooking. I am wondering if he meant the stove might start tipping when you open the drawer. The installers placed brackets on the wall and fastened the range to keep it from tipping (earthquake proof), so maybe this person did not have the range installed correctly. I had a little problem with the oven temperature, but I learned how to calibrate it, and after a little frustration and time, I did get the temperature right; however, the oven knob was very hard to pull off at first, and I may have broken it, because now it fits very loosely and does not feel like it is on snug, which bugs me. I have ordered another oven knob. I can still use it, I just don't like it being so loose. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by out with the old in with the new!!! LOVE this stove......it has everything I was looking for and it fits perfectly in the space that i have for a stove!! July 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst Stove Purchased brand new got it home and did not work. Had to drive an hour and a half back to the store to return it. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by No Regrets, Part 2 This is a continuation of my review from July 19. (I can't see a way to edit my old review.) I explained I had a problem with the oven knob. I just didn't want people to think the stove was so cheap because of this that they would not buy it, because it really is a very nice range. I know it is hard to decide whether to purchase something online, and I am telling you I don't think you will be disappointed. When I got the new oven knob, I looked inside and could see a metal insert. When I pulled my old knob off the oven, I could not see a metal insert inside the knob itself. I looked at the "shaft" on the range where the knob goes on and saw the insert was stuck in it. It did not come off with the knob that first time when I had to pull hard to get it off (to work on calibration on back of knob to get correct temperature, see instructions on Youtube, etc). I took some pliers and managed to pull out the metal insert and push it back in the knob, pushing it down to be flush with the end of the knob, then replaced the knob on the oven, and it was not loose anymore. I am very happy to have fixed this problem. I decided to keep the new oven knob in case I need it some day, but for now all is well. Also, it was a little frustrating trying to get the oven temperature right. I had to re-set it on the back of the knob a few times, then wait a long time (give it 20 to 25 minutes to get to temperature). I finally got it perfect. I have used the oven several times since calibrating it the last time, and the temperature is always perfect, so just don't give up. With mine, I ended up having to turn the dial almost all the way to the left to get it right. Overall, I am very, very pleased with the range now. I also did not realize with my last oven that you really should not put foil on the bottom of the oven, so I put my foil drip pan on the last rack, making sure there is about an inch and a half around all sides. This may have interfered with the temperature somewhat, I don't know. But all is good now. And the oven is very big inside, so having the foil on the lower rack rather than right on the oven floor is not a problem. There are two racks and five different levels where you can place them. Don't think I will be using the very top one though as it is too close to the top. July 23, 2016
