Why is this dryer taking 2 hours to dry an average load of laundry?

This question is from 6.0 cu. ft. Electric Dryer in White
Asked by
Maggie

July 25, 2013
I purchased this set about 2 months ago when I bought my house. I had not hooked them up because the house had absolutely awful well water that was causing everything that came in contact with it to corrode. I fixed the water problem and set up the washer/dryer. The washer is great, but the dryer takes about 2 hours to dry an average load, no matter what setting I use. Unfortunately, it is too late for me to return it. I was told by GE customer service that the dryer takes 45 minutes to determine the dampness of the load and then it will start drying. I explained to her that not only was this on all cycles (not just the more/less dry), but also that it seems impossible that anyone would produce or buy a dryer that runs for 45 minutes before drying. I think she must have been mistaken. She said if the heat comes on and the dryer dries that I do not need a service call. This is ridiculous! What am I supposed to do with this brand new dryer?!?

My dryer dries a load in about 45 minutes. What the rep told you is ridiculous. I would guess the problem is either that your venting is crimped, clogged, or some other such problem, & needs to be replaced with new venting, or you are putting very large loads into it. The clothes must have room to move around in order to dry in a reasonable amount of time.

I'm sorry it's taking so long. I would be annoyed too as electricity isn't cheap. You might try putting in 1 or 2 dry towels to help hasten drying time. I also use those small rubber balls you can find at Bed Bath & Beyond which are also said to speed dry time.

I have had no problems with this dryer and it certainly does not take 45 minutes for the drying process to take place. It only takes about 45 minutes to dry about 7 pairs of jeans. I would call home depot and talk with them and have them send someone out to fix the problem because there IS A PROBLEM. I really love this dryer. I have had it about 7 months and have never had a problem like this.

You definitely need a service call. I have this same dryer and the clothes dry in an appropriate amount of time. We have alot of denim and t-shirts so I usually put it on cotton and "more dry." It's very quiet and efficient. Keep pushing for them to fix or replace. I hope this helps.

I need to clean the lint trap after 30 minutes or mine takes a long time to dry clothes. Try that and if it still takes too long, you might have a bad heater coil. It shouldn't take 45 minutes to determine the dampness of the clothes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy this unless you want to buy another one within 2 yrs Bought this dryer less than 2 years ago, and I am already in the market to buy a new one. Replaced the fuses trying to fix it, and the timer switch, spending over $60 for that and the technician said if that didn't fix, it was most likely the motor- so basically another $90 just to be told they didn't know how to fix it. Run away from this piece of junk- is such a shame that they don't make quality machines that actually last any longer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hate it. This dryer was inexpensive and it shows. I have to hold my foot against the machine when I attempt to open the badly fitting door, in order to not disconnect the vent pipe by dragging the machine along with the door. When I discovered that it wasn't putting out any heat, I called Home Depot and was told it was not returnable, but I could call GE for a repair visit. So here we are now, waiting on a heat coil part. Don't buy this.

Only had a small space to put it and it works great. Have it about 2 months and now the door latch is broken. Latch was tight and now it's broken. Technician is coming on Tuesday so let's see what happens. It dries clothes quickly and is very quiet. Have to give it 4 stars since the latch broke so soon.

You have to use force to get the dryer to open. I called Home Depot and they did send out repair. Repair, which I have a video of, had to use force to open the door. They said it was made that way because previously the door was not latching on tight enough and clothes were not drying quickly. The new and "improved" model, now has the door so tight, a normal person has to work to get it open. It's not a repairable problem. Still shocked that this isn't a problem for more people since the repairman himself admitted it was hard to open.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great I was a little nervous because of some of the negative reviews but I really think some people are a bit too picky. I own a dryer that is quiet and dries my clothes. It doesn't have buzzers or weird settings. It's basically a big tub that spins your clothes and blows hot or warm air on them. Honestly, some people must want extra features just to match their cell phones. Personally, I hate going to the laundry mat but I like to have clean clothes. I like this dryer. Here's a hint, guys, filter to only read the guy comments.
