I'm thinking of using these crates as little seats for my balcony. Are they strong enough for someone to sit on them?

Answer:
Not sturdy at all. They're flimsy and and bend with slight pressure. I cant believe people are using these poor quality crates to build coffee tables.

Answer:
I wouldn't use these (especially the largest one) as seats for adults. Kids might be able to get away with sitting on the medium or small one, but they are not very sturdy and are pretty rough. Without sanding, you would likely get splinters with prolonged contact.

Answer:
It's ok. Pretty small staples are keeping it together. I would put anything too heavy on it. I added my own extra staples to make it a little more secure. It's not 'rickety', just a little cheap.

Answer:
NO WAY. I bought four of these to use as planters and someone walking by accidentally kicked into one and their foot went completed into it. They are not made to be sat on, made from some kind of 1/4 inch soft wood. They didn't even last a year before they fell apart completely.

No. I tried stacking them, and they were very tipsy. Several crates were broken on the shelf when I visited the store in person.

Answer:
This would work if the items were not too heavy or you don't pack it full. They are pretty light weight and break easily. Mine didn't last one season for magazines. One I accidentally kicked and blew out the whole side. Two slats broke and I wasn't even wearing shoes. The other ones I used as planters out on my deck. I think one fell apart by itself, and one is still in use since last year.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 282 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quality was better than I expected After reading some of the reviews, I was surprised at the high quality of these crates. I bought one to use as a magazine crate in the living room. The construction of mine was solid, but I did add a finishing nail between the staples in each board just to add some longevity to the box, since it might get heavy as it fills up. I distressed the wood a little then sanded lightly & stained it with Minwax Provincial stain. I'm going to add some felt pads to the bottom so it won't scratch up the floor over time. The carrying handles are nicely done. Several have asked inside dimensions, here they are: Length - 16 3/8" Width - 11 3/4" Height - 9 1/8" Thickness of side boards - about 5/16" Thickness of end boards - about 3/4" Overall, I'd recommend these highly and you won't find a better price on a wooden crate of this size and quality.....they're Made in USA. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worth it! I waited until these were on sale as I needed to buy a number of them. Was totally worth the wait! I stained them a dark cherry and used these as shelving for an open area we had in our dining. SO happy with the result. April 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Versatile, perfect for our project! We needed a crate to make "shelving" . These served perfectly! March 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Adequate purchase I bought these crates to use as glorified bookends/bookshelves to sit on top of dressers or end tables. These came with no padding in the packaging. All arrived in good shape, not coming apart. These are put together with STAPLES, not nails. The strips will not hold a lot of weight and will become bowed if you try to use them as actual shelving. The bottom strips will all have something underneath them for the application that I'm using them for so I'm not worried about weight. It took a stain well but will need some extensive sanding because they are very rough. RUSTIC is the correct word. My assessed value of these items are that I did not have to buy, saw, or put together the wood so the price that I paid was worth it. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by DIY These are great for DIY projects . I made a coffee table out of the four crates July 26, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by get what you pay for I needed these for a project I was making. They were inexpensive so I jumped at it and realized they were very cheaply made. 2 slats broke when I was sanding them so I had to install reinforcements inside of them. I was using them for craft purposes, can't imagine actually using them to hold anything. July 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Alternative inexpensive 'furniture' - nice! This is not only useful but with a coat of paint, it will be cute and stylish.....and not expensive..... July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by LOVE THEM! Painted them and turned them into a side table. Fantasic price and easy DIY project. July 20, 2016
