Remove vs. wall vs. pull-chain - Part 2

Thank you for the quick response. However, I went into the store yesterday to take a look at this fan, and the display model has no pull chain (and no visible place a pull-chain would be) and the box makes no mention of it. I asked a Home Depot associate, and they said there is NO pull chain with this fan. Is it possible the online specs are incorrect and this fan is remote or wall operation only ?

Thank you.

Answer:
You could order a fan with the chains and no remote but the remote saves a lot of wear and tear. I am going to my daughter's house today to replace a pull switch for the light in her laundry room. With a remote the problem wouldn't be there. It is a small investment and a time saver too. I installed this Hunter fan in my office 2 weeks ago and I love it.

My experience is that this fan is ONLY remote controllable. Even if it is running and I turn the wall switch to the off position and then back on again, I must use the remote to make the fan or light function.

Hello again! Thanks again for your great product questions! I apologize for any confusion. I re-checked the fan specs & you & the Home Depot Associate are correct. There are no pull chain for this fan. Based on this, the fan would definitely be remote control only. The remote that comes with it would be the best option in fan & light operation.

I don't have the answer to that question. Call Hunter customer service at 1-888-830-1326 I would think a specific remote will only work for that specific fan. They operate on frequencies.

You can search for “Hunter ceiling fan remote” or look under “ceiling fan accessories” to locate them. You can also search by model number. Our most popular models are 99110 which is a full function remote that includes operation of all three speeds, full range dimming and a safe exit feature. The safe exit feature automatically turns the fan light off after 30 seconds which allows you to leave the room safely. All you need to do is hold the off button down for 3 seconds to enable this feature. 99111 is our wall control/remote. If you currently have to use the pull chains to change the fan speeds and turn the light on and off this replaces the switch on the wall and allows you to operate all three speeds and the light from the wall instead of using pull chains. The 99112 is our basic on/off remote. This remote only turns the fan on and off and the light on and off. It doesn't allow for adjustment of fan speed or dimming. Thank you! Read Less

Introduction
LED lighting in the home is becoming more popular due to the energy and money saving benefits it offers over traditional halogen lighting. One of the most common problems that an electrician faces when installing LED’s is enabling them to dim.
Resistive Dimming
Resistive dimming has become a standard way of dimming halogen lighting and it works by reducing the voltage allowed to the bulb with a variable resistor.
A resistive dimmer switch is easy to install because it is simply wired between the mains (240V) power and the bulb, however whilst the lighting is dimmed the voltage resistance is converted to heat and is not considered energy efficient.
LED’s use between 12V to 48V so a transformer is required to convert mains power (110V-240V) to the required reduced voltage. Using a resistive dimmer between the main voltage and the transformer will damage the transformer and using a resistive dimmer between the transformer and the LED will cause it to flicker instead of dimming.
Note: LED’s cannot be dimmed using resistive dimming; it will slowly damage the LED’s.
Pulse-Width Modulation Dimming
Pulse-width modulation works by switching the voltage on and off at a variable speed. This causes a flickering effect that is too quick for the human eye to see. By increasing and decreasing the switching speed it increases and decreases the max possible light output and dims the LED.
PWM dimming is energy efficient because unlike the resistive dimming the more the LED is dimmed the less wattage it uses.
A problem found with PWM dimming is as the amount of dimming increases so does the amount of time the voltage is turned off. This will eventually fall within the flickering speed in which the human eye can see.
This flickering can normally be seen when the LED is dimmed to below 10% of its original light output.
Pulse-Width Modulation Dimming
Figure 1 – Pulse-Width Modulation Dimming
TRIAC Dimming
A TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current) dimmer works by conducting the current in both directions, alternating at a variable speed. This makes the switching much faster than Pulse-width modulation dimming so it never goes within the flickering speed of the human eye.
TRIAC Dimming
Figure 2 – TRIAC Dimming
Dimming Signals
Both PWM and TRIAC dimmer modules require a signal to tell the dimmer how much to dim the LED’s. The current standard is 0-10V.
0-10V Dimming
0-10V signals work by sending a separate 10v signal to the PWM/TRIAC dimmer module and then using a resistive dimmer to reduce the voltage on the 10V signal. As the voltage drops the dimmer module reduces the brightness on the LED’s in relation to the voltage.
Example:
10V = Dim at 100%
8V = Dim at 80%
3V =Dim at 30%
DALI Dimming
DALI is an open source 2 way protocol designed for controlling lighting in the home. It is a royalty free standard meaning it is possible to mix and match DALI module’s from different manufactures. DALI works by assigning zones and linking all the DALI modules for each zone together.
The DALI controller can then control multiple zones individually.
DMX Dimming
The DMX 512 protocol was originally designed to control nightclub and theatre lighting and has only recently started to be used in the home.
DMX works by sending a data signal with a value between 0-255 on each channel. There can be a maximum of 512 channels and the signal carries the information for all the channels to each dimmer module receiving the DMX.
This means that each dimmer module is given a DMX address so it knows which channel to read and adjust the brightness accordingly. Each dimmer module has a DMX In and DMX out socket so the data signal can be daisy chained from one module to next.
DMX can control colour changing lighting as well as non-lighting devices. E.G. Fog machines, Blinds and even motorised doo Read Less

Answer:
Hold the center button down on the remote to dim. It is not a bright light to begin with, so it's not much of a "dim".

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty but much more complicated than other fans to put up I really liked the fan in the store, but I wish I hadn't bought it due to the complicatedness of installation. We bought another fan for another room at the same time and I wish we had just both two of it even thought this fan looked much nicer in the store. I wouldn't buy again and honestly I would have returned it if my husband hadn't already invested so much effort/time into it. I like the remote feature as our fan is high up (vaulted ceiling) and the look of it. It also moved the air well, so now that it is up we like it. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Timeless! Love the antique flair to a very classy modern style fan. Paddle fans can be very drab, but this one is not! Beautiful lines, excellent lighting, great investment. July 20, 2016

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Wow. How bad does it need to get before you pull these from the shelves to save the Hunter name. I'd say you waited a little too long. I bought two of these for a new room. Nice fan/ light if it worked. Installation and instructions were good and straight forward. Got it all connected and fan balanced then I turned on the light. Both were so dim that with the 3-60watt bulbs I would compare it to a 4 watt night light. Played with it, checked my wiring could not figure out why they were so dim. Then they just stopped working all together. No fan, no light. Went through the trouble shooting list. That is a joke. the first on the list should be "the receiver may be faulty return it and get a pull chain type" Home Depot you should take the initiative and pull these from your shelves. They are garbage (the remote and receiver) I never got the chance to review the fan and light. April 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fairhaven Ceiling Fan with Light This quiet Hunter Fairhaven fan (Model 53031) circulates the air well so the air conditioner does not cycle 'on' too long. The major complaint from purchaser's of this fan has been the dim lighting. I finally reached an intelligent customer service rep (Krystal) who researched the problem I was having with the dim lighting. When I turned on the lights, it was bright for a few seconds before it dimmed, I told her. Using a multi-meter, the lights were only using 28 watts of the 60 watts allocated. That is the major complaint I have read-which I also had.. What I am about to tell you is not in the Owner's Guide & Installation Manual! Here are the steps for a normal bright light that you thought you would get when you bought your Hunter Fairhaven fan! Make sure the wall switch is in the off position-to get started. Quick & easy process! Turn on the wall switch to the fan. Using the remote control, hold down the 'Off' Button, press the 'light' button twice. That is it! Your lighting problem is now fixed! Customer Service also recommended purchasing LED lighting so I will look into that. I fixed my fan today July 21,2015. I am extremely happy with the lighting in the living room. There is no mention in the manual on where to put the remote receiver. I called the customer service and it sits in the canopy. I angled it into the ceiling for a better fit. Another quick fix: If you are attaching the fan blades (blade irons) to the motor by yourself, put the 2 screws in the blade irons, place 'Scotch' tape over the two separate screws to hold them in place. Then securely tighten the screws to the motor using your screw driver. Remove 'Scotch' Tape. I also used Scotch tape to complete this task! July 21, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Was replacement for a 3-yr old exact same model. Wires melted inside old fan base. Fan is very attractive but the exact same model we installed 3 yrs ago simply failed due to wires melting inside the fan base. We replaced with same style to avoid making another design decision. Hopefully, this second fan will last longer than 3 years! The Hunter brand was a disappointment. March 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Hunter quality is gone forever! I purchased 3 of these fans without doing any research. It's a Hunter fan, I'm covered right? Big mistake. The installation was easy enough. I didn't realize these fans were remote controlled only. Two of the fans don't operate properly anymore. I can't use the light on the fan in my room. After about 30 seconds it trips the whole unit. I have to reset it by removing power from the unit. I can only run the fan. The other fan remote operates when it wants to. If I bounce the signal off the window and the mirror on the dresser I can get it to work, sometimes. The other fan I bought was a Highbury. It's light would flicker whether the fan was on or off. At least that fan had pull chains so we deleted the entire remote system and fixed that problem. Unfortunately, the Fairhavens don't have that option. I called Hunter to see what they could do. Their best offer was to offer additional fans at a discount. They want more money from me for their inferior products! I can't believe this 'American' company would treat a Veteran this way. February 22, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Pain to Install, remote control operation only, but looks nice The remote control receiver is quite large and is supposed to fit inside a tiny canopy - no matter what I tried, I could not get it to fit. Seems like a major oversight by the company. I was ok to operate the fan without a remote control, so I decided to not install the remote control receiver. Once done with the installation, I found out there are no manual switches to control the light and fan. I wasted 2 and a half hours on installation. January 9, 2016
