Does the remote receiver not fit within the housing for the fan? Do I have to mount the receiver on the ceiling next to the fan?

This question is from Fairhaven 52 in. Brushed Nickel Ceiling Fan with Remote Control

I have paid for both a handyman and an electrician to come out an install the fan. When the handyman said the receiver would not fit within the housing, I called the electrician to advise. He confirmed that the receiver was too large to fit within the housing and be hidden from view. Is there something they're missing?

Answer:
I recently purchased a Hunter Fairhaven from Home Depot, the model that uses the built-in remote. Nothing I did could make the receiver fit inside the canopy. It was far too large. Page 10 in the manual had nothing to help me; it merely gave me the wiring setup.

I was fooled, and angry when I opened it up to discover they'd just tossed in a remote, & expected ME to do the install, when it was clear in 20 seconds that there's no way it was going to fit. Answer:
The remote fits in to the housing and completely covered by the fan. The fan housing has two hooks to support the fan while doing the wiring and the remote should slide right in the housing and then the fan should be righted and the remaining housing screws put in place. Cut off any excess wiring once the fan is wired and that should provide plenty of room for the remote to fit in the housing.

Sorry - after looking at my installation sheet I forgot that the re is a minimum about 5" rod that looks like a flush mount but is not, so technically it can't be flush mounted but it looks like it is from most angles.

I'd say this is too big for a 10x10 room. My room is 13x17 & it's a lot of fan for that room. I searched all over for a remote control fan, but this is the cheapest one I found & I didn't really care what size it was. I just wanted the remote. Unfortunately, this one is not factory installed, and it's not going to work any better than buying an off the shelf Remote control kit, and installing it on the fan of your choice. That's basically all this fan is. Just the usual type ceiling fan, with a remote kit tossed in for YOU to install.
I'd suggest buying a fan you like, in the size you want, and add the remote kit. I also bought a smaller fan for my 13x13 spare bedroom, and at 40" it more than blows the room around, and doesn't overpower the room visually. You could probably do with a 36" fan in that small a room. Read Less

Hunter recommends a 36'inch fan for a room size 10x10 to produce better air flow in the room. Fans of this size are not compatible for remote installation.

What about model 22549? Does it also operate exclusively by the remote or is there also a pull chain? We didn't receive a pull chain.

The fan portion is not working after installation and just wondering if skipping the step to set the fan speed to the high position before installation is the cause.

I'm pretty sure it runs off the remote only. No pull chains shown in the pics, and none were on mine, either. You could wire it to a power switch, but that will only turn it on & off, IF it's in the 'on' position, and STILL won't allow you to control the fan.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 1. Drill pilot holes. 2. Upgrade wood screws I went 1 for 2 on this product today. I will say that the one that is installed looks great and functions well. I love it! The other one seems to have a defect in the motor housing. I can't get the blades to spin and the housing seems bent. That one will be returned tomorrow. I wish that I would have noticed before assembling the entire thing. One word of advice. DRILL those pilot holes! Also pick up some upgraded wood screws. You will need two #10 x 3" wood screws. The screws that are included strip out really easily. They are Phillips head and very soft brass screws. I spent the majority of my installation time backing out stripped screws. Not fun at all. The rest of the installation was not bad. I did it by myself in about 2 hours. March 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic breeze Bought for living area to help with AC. Love the remote features, 3 speeds and dimmer light. Comes with caddy to store remotes. Looks amazing and truly helps with air flow. Needed to buy extenders because ceiling is sloped, which were easy to convert. Very happy with these, would definitely recommend. Ordered on line, arrived very quickly. January 7, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Why are most ceiling fan lights so dim?! Appreciate it when others read reviews so I can make a better buy decision, so here is my review: Installation: It took a little past an hour to install the Fairhaven fan without any problems and with no need to level. When I bought the fan, I went ahead and purchased spare batteries and bulbs, because generally the ones that come with most products don't last very long. Lights: Incandescent candelabra bulbs that fit this fan are not very bright at all! Installed this fan in a small bedroom that has been converted into my office. I still need to have multiple lamps on in my room in order to get the amount of light I need to work. Tried other bulbs but they would not work with this model fan. So if you are thinking you can substitute the bulbs and you find something better that works, I'd love to hear about it. Used iPad to take photos of fan, had to brighten up the picture a little bit, low light speaks for itself in how the photos came out. Speed: I've read in other reviews that speeds 1 and 2 are similar, but I'm not seeing that. For a small room the air movement is plenty adequate. The only sound is a muted "click" when turning light on or off or to adjust speed. This fan is super quiet! Appearance: Careful when handling blades because the veneer is thin and can peel off. Otherwise, the fan is attractive, the blades are thick and three dimensional, look like real wood. Remote: As others have mentioned, if you turn the wall light switch off, it turns the whole fan off and you will need to use the remote to turn it back on. My remote works great. I have a tall cabinet next to the doorway and that's where the remote sits for quick access for entry in the dark. Overall for the price, this is an attractive fan with a remote and a quiet motor that works well. Would not suggest buying this fan if you are depending on it to be the sole source of light for the room, unless you already have a super bright room. January 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by EXCELLENT for my need! I needed a remote controlled fan for a fairly small area. This fan fits all those needs! Remote works great. November 13, 2012
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Remote does not work how you think it should! This fan looks great! The issue is the remote. You can't use the wall switch to turn on and off the lights or the fan. The wall switch only provides power to the fan then you have to use the remote to turn the lights on and off and control the fan. My electrician took off the box that talks to the remote and could only get the lights to work. A Hunter technician said you can't bypass it for the fan. I don't understand what Hunter was thinking. Shouldn't it work like a TV you can use the controls on the TV or the remote? They don't make this clear on the box or the user guide. I had to buy 2 new fans and didn't have the box for my old ones so I'll have to eat the cost. February 10, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not the good old Hunter any more! It used to be that a Hunter fan was the gold standard. Not this one. After 2 years, of not much use, it will not run at hi speed. I go and buy a new controller & remote, same problem. Now I'm out the $40 for the new controller and still have to buy another fan. This piece of junk fan does not even have a pull chain option for the light or fan so it is a "through away". Buyer beware. The next time you buy a Hunter fan do not assume that it is a good one. Check it out thoroughly. Oh, and I am a master electrician. Extremely disappointed. June 30, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice fan works weird I have to agree with some of the reviewers about the remote control, weird that it does not hold the lamp when the switch is turned off. The quality of the fan is exceptional for the dollar spent bought mine and installed in less than 1 hour from unpackage to flip switch. The wires could be about 2 foot shorter but that is why you can custom wire the fan. Had a noise issue last night with a hum, loosened the fan from the ceiling so that it was not crammed up to the ceiling as I was feeling the vibration there and the noise is gone. Fine fan for the price May 12, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Remote Issues First of all, this is a beatiful fan! There is one HUGE issue with this fan in my opinion and that is the remote. As a previous reviewer mentioned, there is no 'memory' in the remote. If the light is on and I turn the switch off, when I turn the switch back on, the light will be off and must be turned on by the remote. I have NEVER had a remote controled ceiling fan operate this way. Why would I want to walk into a dark room if my remote isn't on the wall next to the switch... doesn't that defeat the purpose?
