I have been a Hunter customer for 20+ years... Still have one of my 40 lb "original" Hunters made in America.
I bought a new house and decided to go with a "nicer" set of Hunter fans at the recommendation of my nice sales associate at my local Home Depot. We selected the Markham and ordered it online with 5 foot poles for both fans.
Both fans had flawless metal parts finished in "new bronze" (which looks like oil-rubbed bronze). Everything was meticulously wrapped in plastic bags. The fan blades were also wrapped, but they were horrific in finish and overall quality.
Upon opening the bag, which had a label on it proudly proclaiming the parts were manufactured in a Chinese electric product plant, it was apparent the Chinese quality control folks were absent that day. Out of the ten blades in both kits, seven were scratched through the dark color side (the one I needed to use) and they had something sprayed on them that look like "dust." These blades were touted as "dust proofed" with nanotechnology and I suspect that was the goop unevenly fogged on the blades, -which would not even wipe off with a moist paper towel. On one blade, the painted edge had peeled back, exposing the lighter wood color underneath. And, simply poking the rubber grommets through the blades during assembly peeled back the colored material exposing the particle wood material underneath. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!!!
Then I got to the pole installation and found that both poles had been scratched as well! One showed finish damage under the paper label. Both poles were shipped in a narrow box which had no packaging in it but the plastic shrink-wrapped material covering the tubes. No foreign material was in the box so I an only assume the tubes were damaged at the factory before wrapping. Major bummer.
My ceiling is 16 foot. Fortunately, I own a scaffolding I bought through Home Depot so I am not out rental charges. I attempted to call Hunter Fans in Memphis the weekend of 25-26 January, 2014, and was told they open on Saturday at 1100. When I called back at 1105, the recorded message said they were closed for "the holiday." Early Superbowl getaway??? Customer support from Hunter: Zero.
I called Home Depot online order assistance and they told me to return the whole order to the local store and that they would expedite a new set to me. As soon as they arrive, I'll inspect the fan blades and report back what I find. I spent nearly two hours assembling the fans, and had to spend an hour disassembling them and attempting to re-package them. There went a morning.
Hunter has dropped the ball on this model. If you are going to spend nearly $600 for a couple of fans and poles they better have blades of better quality than a no-name $39 special fan. Thank God for Home Depot customer service. They came through to make it right again.
Stay tuned for an update on round 2... If these are as poor, I'll let you know. If the blades are decent quality, I'll report on how they operate after installation.
