Husky 18-Gauge Flooring nailer: The versatile Husky 18-Gauge Flooring nailer is the ideal tool to install your tongue and groove flooring ranging from 3/8 in. to 3/4 in. thick, solid or engineered, including the denser, exotic hardwoods like Stranded Bamboo and Brazilian Cherry. This Husky nailer utilizes the thinner 18-Gauge L-Cleats, which are less likely to split the tongue on softer, engineered flooring and allows for easier penetration when installing higher density wood flooring. Features include: no-mar base making it safe for engineered flooring and pre-finished surfaces, light strike bumper for ease of use on softer, engineered flooring, fiberglass mallet for added durability, lighter weight and non-marring head; anodized aluminum magazine for increased durability, die cast aluminum body, hardened steel drive blade to increase longevity and swivel air connector for hassle free mobility. The Husky 18-Gauge Flooring nailer is the best choice for installing the majority of solid or engineered tongue and groove wood flooring.
  • No-mar design provides increased protection from marring when working with a finished flooring surface
  • Ergonomically designed handle for ease of operation and reduced fatigue
  • Anodized aluminum magazine for long lasting durability
  • Lightweight and durably constructed of high-strength aluminum and heat treated steel parts
  • Fiberglass mallet with rubber head included

Floor Gun Selection

I will be putting down a 3/8 inch floor - The gun advised by HD rep was 15.5 Gage, looking at the instructions the smallest plate is 5/8 - 9/16, do I have the wrong nail gun?
Asked by: bill
Higher gauge is a smaller diameter or thinner piece of metal/nail/cleat. It is opposite. For 3/4 inch Brazilian Cherry hard wood, the standard is 18 gauge L cleats from a floor nailer. 15.5 gauge sounds way too big if you are using a floor nailer. If you are using a "gun", you have to use one that shoots finish nails and NOT a brad nailer. Brad nails will not hold and the wood planks will squeak after they come loose. 16 gauge is OK for finish nails from a "gun". Your floor is half as thick as mine, so I would think that 15.5 gauge is way to much (too large of a cleat). Make sure your floor nailer has the right plates. If not, it probably was not designed to work with your floor thickness.

Customer Reviews

18-Gauge L-Cleat Flooring Nailer is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from All-in-one, sturdy, performs well, great warranty Out of the box, the nailer comes ready for action, ¼” inlet pre-connected and pneumatic oil included. A 5/8”, ¾” and 3/8” base plates included along with the 7/16” flooring shim. It is for 18 gauge cleats only. I used it to install ¾” solid Victoria Mahogany covering about 700 Sq. feet. The nailer performed well and drove every 1 ½” cleat perfectly into the tongue. It had no jams and gave each course a nice tight join. I ran it at 90 psi after running some sample strokes. PSI however ranges from 70-115 that pretty much covers all sorts of wood materials out there. In my experience, this nailer has full capability to perform and produce professional results job after job. Before use, do add couple of drops of oil and if possible use air filter. Included rubber mallet got some good weight to it and performed well setting tongue& groove joints, couple of bangs on long lengths and everything was a nice fit. I like the fact that it’s a bit lighter than others I’ve used; it certainly helps covering large areas. The User Manual is well-detailed for DIYers and offers great tips with illustration. I enjoyed using it, love the results it produced and highly recommend to DIYers and Pros.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great nailer for pros, looks very stylish It is a quality tool, well-built, just the right weight and feels good in hands. I wasted no time putting it to task after finishing first three courses from the wall using finish nailer. With this nailer, I used generic brand 1 ¾” 18 gauge L-cleats with 6” spacing on ¾” X 5”pre-finished cinnamon maple, finishing 2 rooms covering about 450 square feet. The nailer fired about 2500+ nails with zero misfires. I did start by adding couple of drops and then kept adding every 500 cleats; it had no trouble delivering what so ever. Simply put, top score on performance. Non mar ¾” plate worked well on the pre-finish surface. Additional included plates are 5/8” and 3/8”. Overall, I am much pleased with its quality, delivery and appearance. The geometric design on the handle bar in fact gives it a very stylish look. Husky offered 2 years warranty with it that will cover defects in workmanship or material and does not cover misuse or normal wear and tear. I must say that as long as you don’t run it dry and use it with air filter, it will last you many years without trouble.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Strudy and Well Built My one complaint about this nailer is the way the plates line up with the hardwood floor. I laid down 3/4 Oak. I noticed that i was sending come nails on top of the wood instead on top of the tongue.I was using the 3/4 plates but it catches on a different part of the nailer. This was mainly MY FAULT but once you get going in a nice rhythm it is hard to pay attention. Other than that it was a very smooth nailer. I also used this on my hand scraped Bamboo. The 18 gauge was great for this. Flew right through the bamboo. You can give it a nice hit with the mallet (included).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Paid for itself instead of getting rental I found this at my local store for $75.00 . I used it for about 800 sq. ft of 3/4" hickory. The nailer performed flawlessly. As another reviewer mentioned, it is possible to drive cleats into the surface of the wood as the nailer may catch the tongue when not aligned properly. This was completely my fault, I wasn't used to the nailer. It is clearly marked in red where the tongue should be aligned with the nail gun. The mallet was well balanced & felt good in hand. It was cheaper for me to buy this than rent a nailer for 48 hours. No regrets with my purchase. I will never use a manual nailer again! I was initially worried that the plastic plate would leave marks on the dark stained, prefinished hardwood floor I was installing, it never left any. When friend was racking flooring for me, I was able to fly through the open areas of my floor, no jams in just over 3,000 cleats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good nailer, great customer service Bought this nailer after reading online reviews and they are all spot on (except for the one guy's jamming problems). I did 550 sqft of 3/8" stranded bamboo with no problems. It did develop a slight air leak under the cap, but it didn't affect the performance that I was able to notice. I called customer service after finishing the floor, and they are sending me a new nailer with a return label to send the old one back, no questions asked! This is the sort of customer service I honestly didn't expect, but am pleased to have received!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leaking Air Messed Up L Cleats This floor nailer worked for about 5 minutes, then air began to leak somewhere near the connection to the air hose. The name brand compressor was working well. I found that 100 psi worked well to drive 1 3/4 inch L cleats into 3/4 inch Brazilian Cheery hard food floor boards (on tongue groove area). After a few minutes, my L cleats were all over the place (these were name-brand Powernail L cleats). Some were sticking out 1 cm, some were going deep and cracking the tongue wood. I oiled the nailer also. I adjusted the psi, then the l cleats would stick out 1 cm or so. I could not get the floor nailer to hold a steady pressure anymore. I returned this and got a Norge floor nailer to see what would happen. The Norge floor nailer worked perfectly at around 77 psi. I hardly cracked the wooden tongue and the unit only cost about $240.
