Answer:
If placed upright, it’s water tight to rain and driving rain but not full submersion. Also, in very high winds or turbulence (like in the back of a pickup) small drops sometimes get in around the clamps. I fixed that issue by gluing some foam on the inside of the lid near the clamps.

In my opinion I would say yes. There are 4 latches that secure the lid to the top and it's a pretty tight seal so I don't see any reason these couldn't be left outside.

It's not bug proof. Ants can get inside so I wouldn't use it for storing food.
However, it resists rain very well. If placed upright, it’s water tight to rain and driving rain but not full submersion. Also, in very high winds or turbulence (like in the back of a pickup) small drops sometimes get in around the clamps. I fixed that issue by gluing some foam on the inside of the lid near the clamps.

They seem to be water tight. Mine have been left in the rain w/o leakage but I wouldn't think you could fully submerse them and expect them to hold water out. There is NOT a rubber gasket or seal at the lid.

The lid snaps on tight and keeps rain out. I dont think I would put it in a canoe on a rapid river. It keeps my cans of paint dry and not rusting and it has set out all winter. I think that it is well made and so I do not see a problem with water, (Rain) getting into it.

you cant submerse in in a pond...but I think you could leave it in the rain...or a puddle. I would put things in a plastic bag, then close it up in the box and feel pretty confident.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by True Hidden Gem We used these for camping, and they performed amazingly well.....they hold a TON of stuff, ans with the resided lid, a bit more if needed. Lock securely in place, once you match the lid correctly, they swing back like a hinge top if desired as well. They stacked beautifully, nestling one inside the other and didn't move on a 9 hour trip through crazy mountains in the back of a u-haul. We're getting a few more. Very pleased. As for person who couldn't unlatch them, they are a firm close, but that's the point, no? You don't want your case opening on its own. If you have problems with arthritis or weakness in hands, perhaps another one would be better. August 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bottomless Pit for Storage These totes are just the right size to put job site equipment in and then tote around to where you are working. I am using one as a flammable storage box with paint and stain out side of my shop. The other one is in the back of my car with the tools that I need to do a specific job. I love how you can just keep putting stuff inside and it never seems to fill up. It also keeps my tools out of sight from prying eyes. The handles and latches are strong so they don't pop open all or the time. I like the fact that you can stack them if needed. These are great totes. If I had room in the shop, I would have 100 more. They are great. Love them. January 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Durable very good quality great storage for any items. Durable very good quality great storage for any items. Very large and easy to store your tools or any other things. I keep mine in my truck bed with my tools. Water tight and snap on covers. December 25, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Storage Totes Created First, they look fantastic: Their masculine, sporty-industrial design looks great anywhere, so you don't need to hide them. Second, they are durable: I purchased 24 totes, I stocked them fully, and they are stacked six high. The average weight in each is 40lbs, and they are solid. Also, thanks to the intercradled design of the lid and base, there is no shifting in the stacks. Third, they are user friendly: The 20 gallon tote can be easily carried by one person, and the dimensions--about as wide as a person's body--allow it be swiftly lifted trough an atticway, doorway, or stairway. I HIGHLY recommend these totes to everyone, and I will continue to purchase them as needed, or until they are discontinued! November 22, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Bad investment Very hard to open. The cover cracked on two out of three of them. October 23, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lightweight but Strong Storage Solution These totes are surprisingly lightweight. They "nest" together, but I would not trust stacking them very high because it doesn't take much force to separate them. They are very strong and the handles are large and don't pinch your hands like others I have used. The lid is hinged on all four corners so there are a variety of ways to open the lid. I like loosening the latches on one side and then swinging the lid to one side, instead of removing it altogether. Note that because of the handle design, the interior of the tote is not square. Because of this the interior space is a little smaller than the outside dimensions. February 3, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very bad lid design. I bought 24 of these to replace the HDX tough totes I bought in November that shattered once it got cold. I bought one bin and jumped on it in -10F and it held up so I bought 24, I tried to stacked 4 of these up with my tools inside (maybe 20lbs each) and it was very tipsy, then I tried to lock the latches and with the added weight you can't lock the latch shut, want to open one? nope the stupid rubber edge the put on the handle just folds over (some weaker than others). The lids pinch your hands when trying to carry them once they are loaded down. I was expecting something husky... January 17, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I got one just like this (if not the same?) and it worked PERFECTLY for hanging files Originally I got this for stuff I needed stored for long term and wanted a heavy duty tote. Then I noticed the inside of mine had a lip around the top, and worked perfectly to hang files from...these hold a lot of weight, and can be durably stacked and carried....unlike those portable 'file boxes' with handles that break and plastic that cracks. I like this for all of the old important stuff that stays in garage w/o getting crushed... in an emergency, I could just grab it & go. I'm sure I will get more of these because of the quality construction. Oh, and the lid design help keep liquid running off rather than IN. September 25, 2014
