Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by G60ING Great Space and Price but Several Damaged Boxes
I used to sell Craftsman tools years ago and had several of their boxes. When I moved a couple months ago I sold them thinking I would replace them. I've been looking at all brands and sizes and for garage needs. I decided on two 40" combos for my auxiliary storage boxes.
I couldn't figure out what the differences were between the two 40" combos HD has for what was $298 and now $348, after trying to buy my boxes yesterday I figured it out. One of the 40" combos has a flat top bottom box that uses a bracket to bolt the two boxes together. The other combo has a traditional top with a lip running the perimeter for the top box to sit in without sliding off. After three trips to the store I when through 3 of one design and 1 of the other and didn't find one combo that wasn't damaged in some way. Inspect your boxes at the store, getting home to then find the damage will only anger you ;)
The flat top boxes does have nice plastic caps on the ends of drawer pulls.
The flat top's top box is significantly lighter than then then combo with a lip on the bottom box. (thicker gauge of sheetmetal?)
The top box from from the flat top combo will NOT fit on the box with the lip.
I think the combo with the lip is the better version for my tastes, I hope to eventually get two damage free examples. Here are the numbers to guide you to the lip combo: Model # HTC404 HMT406 Internet # 204398420 Store SKU # 720161 Sales check item number: 873388006458
Unfortunately 4 out of 4 products that I inspected during my 3 visits to the HD store yesterday were damaged. The staff there was super helpful but at the end of the day I decided to take home a damaged product (because I had undamaged half of it at home) because I was tired of dealing with tool boxes for the day. I will order 2 of the design I want online to have shipped to the store. Hopefully between my current damaged combo and the two coming in I will have two undamaged boxes.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Dave This tool chest is as good as any if not better
I have had all kinds of tool chest I rate this one as good as Snap-On or Craftsman I size. I unpacked the chest and filled it with tools right away I like the way the doors glide even when they are full of tools.

Bought for 298 the other day which is a heck of a deal got it home and everything was together besides the casters which was simple to put on. seems very sturdy I use it commercially and have not had any problems. Most boxes cost 300 for just the top box and this was the whole set. So far im impressed with its durability and the ball bearing slides.

This is not a daily use mechanic shop type of chest. This is the weekend warrior, shade-tree mechanic tool chest. It is sturdy, but the drawers can be somewhat temperamental. They do hold plenty of weight, and slide smoothly, but may not always close perfect flush. This is only noticeable when you try to lock it. For 300 bucks, there is not a better tool chest on the market period! I've shopped around for over 2 years, and I'm glad I went with this chest!! Also it appears this model is better packaged and shipped. Not a single dent or scratch on either the top or bottom chest. Love this tool chest!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Homeremodeler533 The last tool chest you will ever need
One thing is for sure, you will not be disappointed by the storage capacity of this behemoth. When it first arrived at my door I couldn't believe how massive it was! I was able to put all of my tools from 3 different shelving units into it and it still looks empty.
The drawer sizes are great, perfect for hand tools and there is a giant bottom drawer to hold power tools as well. The construction is very sturdy and it has a great shine which makes my work area look much nicer. Also I know the construction is solid because I put it in my (very) unlevel basement and it doesn't wobble or anything.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MCPO Great Tool Chest. Even better Customer Service
This tool chest is a great value. After much research this was by far the best tool box for the money. Easy to unpack and assemble. Just attach handle and casters. Very well constructed, large heavy duty rails on all the drawers and large casters for easy moving. Struts on lid work great.
But even more important, what a Great experience! I purchased this Tool Chest on line with pickup at my local store on East Adamo in Tampa Florida because they didn't stock this chest. When it arrived 6-7 days after I had place the order, I received an e-mail and a phone call letting me know it was ready for pick up. When I went to pick it up everything went like clockwork. Debbie at the customer service desk was super. She was very well trained and organized. First she quickly checked that my order was there, second she called for someone to bring it up to the front, then she finished the paper work. This made my wait time minimal. The man who brought it up front was friendly and quickly recruited a co-worker to help in loading of our truck. All three of these people seemed happy to do their jobs well. Thank you.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by OldsDad For a home shop. Great!
This review is written with the price point in mind. There is no match for the price/size anywhere I've found, even the cheapo stores.
First off as of Dec. 2013, HD has two different manufacturer part numbers under the same store SKU, for this chest. The major problem, and it is major if you want them to stack, is the top and bottom are manufactured completely separate depending on the MANUFACTURER part number. One set has a bottom chest with a lip on three sides, in which the top chest sits. As a consequence the top chest is slightly smaller in length and width (3/8" if I recall correctly)to fit inside the "lips". The other MANUFACTURER (remember they are both under the same H.D. SKU.) number has a bottom chest completely smooth on top, no lips, and the top chest has the exact same dimensions, and they attach via brackets and pre-drilled/tapped hole in both top and bottom cabinets.
So, if you missmatch either cabinet they will NOT fit together. The smaller top-cabinet will not reach the corners to be able to use the brackets, it also does not have attachment points, and will just slide off if the bottom-cabinet is the "non-lipped" version. If you get the larger top cabinet, with mounting holes, it will be too big to sit down inside the lipped bottom-cabinet. This was a major annoyance but the staff at the store were exceptionally helpful in finding me the correct top cabinet to match the bottom I had which I'd already assembled and wasn't loading back in my truck myself. Let's be honest, this is a price point decision, so I rolled with the punches. Just check your boxes before you leave the store.
The cabinet is more than adequate for the home DIY'er. I have mine in my barn/shop and it's GREAT for storage. The metal is a thin guage as expected, but is strong enough I have no concerns with it fully loaded. The drawers slide well and it's that much nicer now that I've added non-slip mats inside the drawers.
The lock mechanism is for keeping out small children, at best. Do not buy this for security. I'm convinced anyone over the age of 6 could just yank them open. I didn't buy it for the locks and probably will never use them. If you plan on locking them, there is a considerable amount of fussing with the drawers to get it to both lock and unlock.
I would not use this in a professional setting, but if it's for your house it's a no brainer.
It's all a matter of expectations. Keep them congruent with reality and this will be a great addition to your garage/home shop too.
