Customer Questions & Answers

Can this cord be used with an electric snowblower?

Asked by: Colleen
Absolutely. That is why I purchased this extension cord. It works well and remains flexible in cold weather. My snowblower is rated at 15 amps and this cord fits the requirements.

How is this cord in freezing Cold temperature?

Do it get hard and stiff in cold weather? I'm thinking about getting it for a snow blower. The Snow Joe Ultra 18" 15-Amp Electric Snow Blower w/ Light – SJ623E
Asked by: Hook
Yes it did get a little stiff. I was still able to roll it up though. Use it for my diesel truck.

Compatibility with portable generator and sump pump

will this cord work properly with a 3500/3000 watt portable generator and a sump pump that is 115V,9.0 amps and 720 watts. Dont want to burn the house down!
Asked by: Rob
To: 'Rob' - Re:{....Using a portable Generator & Sump Pump Outside} P.S. = IMPORTANT!! P-L-E-A-S-E closely-examine that Portable Generator....somewhere, there has to be a Ground Screw, usually brass / copper, extending from the Base of the Unit or Alternator itself. Whenever using any portable GEN., always have a temporary, 1/2" or 5/8" diameter copper-clad steel ground bar driven into the earth, a specific electrical grounding clamp for same & connect w/ a short length of solid, bare #6 copper wire! ......Thanks.

Operating and Storage Temperatures

Are there recommended operating and/or storage temperatures for this cord? Please advise.
Asked by: ChuckV
ChuckV dated 01/25/2016 ( or, should that have been this NEW Year of 2017?)... There is N-O required or absolute minimum Operating Temperature for copper cabling! .... obviously, it will be much less flexible than during mid-Summer, during ambient Tempts nearing 100F.. F.Y.I. = at much-lower temperatures, say near Zero F., those conductors W-I-L-L be better-able to conduct Power for that 100' distance. Additionally, NO Special Conditions for Summer Storage.

Customer Reviews

50 ft. 12/3 SJTW Extension Cord with Standard Plug is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective - SURPRISE I received this Husky 50-ft Extension cord almost 6 months ago, and thought it was fine. I even wrote a glowing review on it (since removed) because it worked on the indoor/regular outlets I used and it has a great price. Being made of 12 gauge wire it should handle virtually any 110V tool or accessory, from air compressor to table saw or electric lawn mower, even though it's rated for “medium duty”. The thick, bright red/black wire made it very visible and tough enough to withstand occasional abuse from stepping on it or catching it in doorways. Then I tried to use it outside, in a GFCI outlet. The outlet kept tripping. After troubleshooting with an electrical multi-meter, I discovered the cord is MIS-WIRED. The neutral (white) and ground (green) wires in the male plug are wired together (shorted). That makes the cord into a regular two-wire, non-grounded cord without the enhanced safety of a 3-wire cord, and there was no way to tell until I used it in a GFCI plug (which senses the wiring and trips if it's faulty)! Hopefully, this is only a problem with my cord and not a generic issue but my advice is to check your cord thoroughly before using it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wore out before 3 yrs. Used this cord as an average homeowner fixing up house. It developed strange twists that actually have caused the outer insulation to break through in several places, despite fastidious rolling up after use and indoor storage. I tried to take it back to Home Depot for an exchange, and they said only for 90 days. But it has a 3-year limited warranty! I am okay with prorating, because I have definitely used this cord, but I can't anymore. I will try again on my next visit to Home Depot. LoL.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable and heavy duty I purchased this for use with an electric snow blower. Needed high current capability along with long length. This cord certainly fit the bill. I was concerned that the cord would become "stiff" in cold weather but this cord proved to remain adequately flexible in frigid temperatures. Quality of the cord seems quite rugged.

Good cord, except that for many purposes, using a 10/3 gauge cord is better. The price may be a bit more, but unless this cord is intended for a single purpose - ever - then bumping up to a larger cord may prevent aggravation later. For me, I purchased this to run power tools. It worked great - for ALMOST all my tools. My 15amp DeWalt air compressor, not so much. It gave it some power, but it wasn't enough to actually get compressed air, and it stopped trying pretty quickly. I returned this and upgraded to the 10/3 (different brand), and had no problems with any of the tools. So while this cord works well most of the time, if you're looking for a long cord for power-hungry 15amp tools, I'd recommend a step up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked perfectly with my electric snowblower. Just purchased this cord today to clear out about 100 ft of driveway with my electric snowblower and no problems whatsoever. This cord is heavy and kind of a pain to drag around while clearing the snow but I think its good quality and shouldn't have to buy another one for a long time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from If this cord is designed for medium duty use, I shudder to think what a light-duty cord would be like I have had other Husky brand indoor/outdoor extension cords, all with the black and red stripe and black terminals, and so far all of them, including this one, have suffered from weak contacts in the receptacle end. After only a few insertions (no more than ten), the receptacle no longer holds the plug securely, and I have to use electrical tape to keep it from falling out. The package says that Husky brand cords are for medium duty use (duty defined as frequency of use, but giving no numbers for the frequency); RIDGID cords are for heavy duty use; and HDX cords are for light duty use. I have also owned RIDGID cords, and they, indeed, are excellent, long-lasting, and very reliable. The package doesn't say what frequency of use The Home Depot defines as "medium duty", but if it's more than ten uses in a lifetime, then all the Husky cords I've had fail--and I shudder to think what a light-duty HDX cord is like (I've never owned that brand); I guess you'd better plug something into it and leave it there forever. I know these cords have a three-year warranty, and I'm sure The Home Depot would replace it, but why would I bother getting another one just like it? I've already learned from my own experience that it's a brand-wide problem. I thought this cord, made in USA (whatever that's worth) and 12 AWG, might be better constructed than a 14 AWG, made in Philippines, Husky cord I bought eight or or ten years ago, but the terminals appear to be identical. I still use that old cord, and I will use this one occasionally--securing the connections with electrical tape, and I shouldn't have to do that on a cord this expensive. It's a shame, because the cord itself is tough but flexible and a pleasure to use. But putting cheap, weak connectors on a nice cord ruins it. A few extra pennies invested in a high-quality receptacle would have made this a great product.
