Customer Questions & Answers

can you add casters to the unit?

Asked by: gr07
The correct answer is NO. I added 4" industrial casters and, as others have noted the thin metal with holes in the feet is not up to the task. I had the shelves assembled with nothing on them and the metal failed and the shelves tipped. Maybe with sturdy platforms the answer would be different but learn from my mistake!

What is the shelving weight capicity?

For example is it 1000 pounds per shelf?
Asked by: Gerald
Just purchased 5 shelve units for a storage room. The units are good quality and assemble very easily. I've noticed the wire shelves need more support bars. There is only 1 support bar per wire shelve, which is fastened in the middle of the shelve. The outside edges of the wire shelve bend very easily if you put too much weight. I probably have about 100 to 200 lbs on the edges, with the weight evenly distributed on the entire shelve and the wire is bending badly on the edges. I'm going to check with Husky to see if they supply more support bars. If not, I'm going to have to use 2x4 pieces on every edge.

Can this item be disassembled for travel?

Asked by: LGLL
This unit can be dis-assembled but for what purpose? This is more of a permanent fixture and you would probably only want to take it apart if you were moving.

How large is the box it comes in?

I'm trying to figure whether or not I can bring this home from in my SUV or not.
Asked by: James
The box is very large and very heavy. I have a 2005 Lincoln Navigator (standard length) and the box only fit length-wise after moving the front passenger seat forward allllll the way. I could lift the box by myself - but I am a very large man with heavy lifting abilities. I would recommend having an assistant no matter what.

The best part is that you can connect the shelves together. The problem I have found is that when you start connecting shelves together they leave you with extra legs. I have talked to multiple HD people trying to find replacement shelves so that I can use the extra legs, and not one could help me they all tell me to contact the manufacture. After lots of research and reading I finally found the shelve. To help you all out here is the Link to the HD Shelve so that the Husky Legs don't go to wast.

This product is a step above the shelving units they have on display on my store. This is really sturdy, very commercial, and really nice looking on top of it. It comes in one large and heavy box. One person can manage it, but two would be ideal. My only complaint is the packaging, the metal all comes on top of each other resulting in a lot of scratches on the metal. I contacted the company and they sent some replacements for the really scratched pieces. I ordered online and picked up in my store. The set up is fairly easy and can be tool-less, the only time a tool comes into play is if you install the cross bars on the shelf which I would do even if you don't max out the weight. I did a lot of research on the size of the shelf as I wanted to use 1 series of containers. I went with the HDX 17 gallon black and yellow containers. They are not as nice as the husky ones, but they are much cheaper and at the end of the day they are storage bins. I measured and wanted to do 4 shelves with 4 containers with a total of 16 containers. I also needed to make sure this fit right below my garage railing along the inside wall. I added the 5th shelf to be able to put miscellaneous items up top. Overall I highly recommend the unit. My one complaint is still the packaging, a little foam in between the metal would be ideal.

Pros - Once assembled, the unit is stable and certainly will make a major difference in how my garage looks. Also appreciate the shelf depth. Nice to be able to configure the shelf height to meet my needs. Cons - As noted in other reviews, the shipping box and nearly non existent interior packing material (a few thin sheets of paper) is really unfortunate and poorly conceived. While this unit is made of heavy gauge steel, it will still bend if other boxes are stacked on top and if mishandled via transport. I highly recommend before buying and transporting the box home that you open and inspect the contents in the store. I learned this the hard way. Loaded box in my minivan, got home and unpacked the parts of my unit to discover 40% of the pieces were badly bent to the point assembly was not possible. I took the box and contents back to my local HD and they quickly replaced. I know the included instructions say not to but I had taken time from work to complete this project so I wasn't going to wait days for a new shelving unit to arrive. Sorry Husky! Also regarding assembly, not sure where they came up with the assembly in 10 minutes ... no way! Not hard to assemble but 1. the included instructions are not very detailed so you will need to rely on the color pictures on the box and just think about what you are doing. And 2. the info page on the HD website infers this is a simple "click and lock" assembly so you can change the shelving high whenever you would like. Nope you really need to use a hammer or mallet to get the railings to fit properly (this is noted in the instructions). So net, I've only had this unit for 24 hours and I am still in the process of organizing my garage as the attached picture indicates!! I'd say I'm happy to have a sturdy shelving unit in place but not sure I would buy this Husky product again. I would likely spend a bit more and buy the comparable Gladiator brand shelving unit.

I bought 3 in total but brought them home in our mini-van one at a time. Because I had to unload it by myself, I just left the box in the van and removed the pieces as I put it together. It went together easily. The cross bar for the shelves (not shown in pic) are kind of tricky to install. I found that if I inserted and tightened all the screws on each shelf before putting the grates in things went more smoothly. The issue is getting your hands and tools in that tiny space. The shelves seem sturdy. The wire grates do not but they are holding up and doing the job just fine. I am using these in my garage and have quite a bit of stuff on them. Also, I plan to add plywood over the grates I will slide stuff on and off of because the product gets hung up on the raised bars of the grate.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Piece of garbage Sad to say that I purchased this shelving unit and 10 minutes later when I got it home and opened up, it was complete garbage. For starters, such a heavy item was in such a thin flimsy box that tore easy and offered no protection to the light aluminum framing. Once we got it opened and removed from the box, we noticed that one of the two sides was damaged. Whoever stocked/shipped this item damaged in at some point and didn't feel inclined enough to replace it or send it back before someone, like me, bought it. It's mighty convenient that the "do not return to store if damaged" slip of paper was laying underneath the bent portion of the shelf. If I could give it negative stars it would be -100. I don't have the time or money to be buying broken things.

I bought one of these shortly after Christmas to help organize Christmas decorations in my garage. I liked it so well once I had it up that I went back and got another one. The unit is sturdy and I like the 24" depth of the shelves. That enabled me to turn my storage bins long-ways in able to fit 4 on each shelf. When I assembled the second one I spaced the shelves a little differently to maximize the space. For the first unit, I spaced them evenly which worked fine. Just a little tweak on the second one. The unit is huge and very heavy in the box. I needed help loading in the truck, but just unpacked it from there in the garage. Once assembled, it's tough to move, so I suggest assembling it close to where you will use it. The only difficulty in assembly was attaching the nuts and bolts for the bottom shelf brace. Fitting my hands in there was almost impossible, so my wife had to step in and help there. For the second unit, I attached the top and bottom shelf first and then turned the unit over and attached the braces before assembling the other shelves. That made things much easier. All in all, assembly was pretty easy. I have to say, I'm very pleased with these units. They look good, fit great in my space and hold a lot of "stuff".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality product I bought this shelving unit for my basement to help get some of the clutter up off the floor. The box was too heavy for me to lift myself so I left it on the garage floor and took a few trips piece by piece. I assembled the entire unit in less than an hour, and it fit my needs exactly. It's very sturdy, no wiggling, and the shelves are holding up the weight of what I put on them. I'm female, 46 years old, and other than struggling a little to get my hands in tiny places to screw in the center support brackets, I had no trouble putting this unit together myself.

I would recommend this product with conditions. it assembles fairly easy, however one must be Very careful to assure that the dual clips are completely engaged before hammering into place. As with anything adjustable extreme care must be used otherwise the unit will not assemble plumb, level and square. also it easily gets out of square if moved. Otherwise the unit appears to be strong and well made. I used 1/2 inch plywood over the metal screens to store small items. I would also urge using bolts instead of the plastic clips provided.
