Customer Questions & Answers

Cann the 2" husky tube cutter also cut steel pipe

Asked by: mel
It can but you would end up placing excessive wear on the blade and end up dulling it quickly.

Will this cut conduit?

Asked by: twadd
This cutter would very easily cut through conduit and the release option would make it very easy to get to the next cut in a bigger project. It will give you a nice clean cut, and the deburring tool will help ensure to clean the edges as to not cut the wiring.

I bought this to use in installing central vacuum system piping, 2 inch PVC that has thinner walls than standard PVC. I am a DIYer and really wanted this to work. I tried using it twice, but when gradually tightening the cutter around the pipe, it began to collapse the pipe producing an inaccurate useless cut. I gave up and used my hacksaw and mitre box instead. I liked the quick adjust action, but it did not produce a good cut for my task. I am hoping that I can return it for a refund.

O.D. Tube Cutter, advertised and sold by Home Depot. This cutter performed extremely poorly on 17 gauge 1 1/2" Diameter brass tubing. The cutter tended to skate across the surface vs stay square and cut along the same line. In addition, the cutting action took extremely long as if the blade were dull. I would not recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not sure till you try it. When I ordered this tube cutter, wasn't quite sure why I would need the Auto release feature, till I went to use it on a PVC Pipe I was working with. It doesn't take long to see the advantage, so that when you have gone almost through the pipe, release it if not fully supported at both ends, and then finish the cut with a fine saw. Of course if you properly prepare to do the job right, won't be an issue, but when space is tight and you want to make the fix quickly, you don't take everything into account. But this tool save me the embarrassment of not making the job l0ook professional, even though I rushed it. Thank you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For home use I not disappointed with the quality or performance of this pipe cutter. It has performed well for the few applications that I have needed around my house. I would not say that this particular product would handle any heavy use. The cutter seems to be a little flimsy when you try torque down to rapidly. I believe it is because of the so called auto release function, which is very aggrevating and seems to me will be a place of weakness in the product. I have had other product that were simply screw type that never seem to have a problem cutting materials. Overall the cutter is surely a nice tool to have around the house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacing the plumbing Needed a pipe cutter that was adjustable to multiple sizes and this unit covers up to 2", making to easy to ensure that any pipe in the house I would need to work with would be covered with this one cutter. The quick release button makes it really easy and convenient to move onto the next cut without having to reverse spin the blade back to where you need it. The cutter is well constructed for heavy use, and the blade is easily swapped out for when the time comes. It is a bit heavier than other tube cutters I have used but definitely makes up for it with the different features it has.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as expected It works. The larger the pipe the easier it is for it to slip off a bit but in the end it does cut cleanly and squarely. It comes with another blade which is nice. The ratcheting feature is always nice since you can easily release it when you need to and also you can just slide it into place without having to crank it tight. Construction of the unit feels good too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A Real Fooler First Impressions: Heavy all metal construction, nice finish Description: This is a tubing cutter for all types of pipe up to two inches in diameter. Usage: The packaging comes with no instructions. I supposed it is assumed to be intuitive, but it is not. The package back states both “Auto Release” and “Quick Release”. After fiddling with the tool for a little bit, I was able to assume that it works in a particular manner. First, the red button allows it to be closed upon the pipe or tube by sliding the cutter bar inward while pressing the button. Second, pressing the button while unscrewing the knob allows a faster opening than with it released, but it does not work in reverse of the inward action. It states that it is made of aluminum, but it must be very heavy aluminum and feels more like steel. This is a very stout piece of equipment. The adjustment screw knob works very smoothly and has a fine thread adjustment. There is no stop, so the user must be careful to never tighten it closed all the way without material in the jaws. The package states that there is an extra bonus of a replacement cutter wheel, but I found no extra wheel and must assume it simply means that it is replaceable, even though the package states “Use caution when opening package. Sharp blades are enclosed.”. Go figure. The attached reamer/deburrer is of thoughtful design. In fact, it is the first one I've seen that looks exactly like this one. It is the standard triangle shape, but with a bent edge along on edge to better scrape the pipe end, and a file-like finish on the back side. It swings open and has a button to depress to close it. Very nice. Now for the bad news. It turns out the although the cutter is advertised as being for up to two inch tubing, it will only ream out up to approximately 3/8 inch tubing. It would not scrape out the end of a 1/2 inch pipe. Worse yet, the button stopped working and appeared to be wanting to fall out. I also felt that the reamer was too hard to open and close. I tried the cutter on PVC and it took a very long time to cut thru. Making it almost worthless was the fact that it left a raised lip which had to be filed to get a fitting on the end of the pipe. When I tried it on copper, it just squeaked with every turn. I never found any Auto Release or Quick Release mechanism working. I went back over the box it came in, but I never did find the spare cutting wheel, either. The tool comes with a life-time warranty, and replacements cutting wheels are available in a two-pack. Overall Thoughts: This is a very durable tool, and from the looks of it, one that anyone would be glad to have, except for the fact that it does not work very well at all. I recommend you skip this one.
