what kind of metal are these files made of

are these files made of heat treated high carbon steel???
Asked by: Simone
It is listed as hardened, but if they dull after the first use with common metal then I would take them back! As a general rule, a file needs to be a heat treated, high carbon steel if it is going to be able to do it's job.

Flat/Curve Assortment File Set (10-Piece) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 68.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Small Size File Set, Okay Value if that is what you need! These files are small, at least the largest ones are probably about medium in size if you are buying them individually and a name brand. The do seem to work fine, although I haven't abused any of them yet! Seriously, if you use them correctly and take care of them, I think any file should do fine. I was able to sharpen a lawn mower blade with the largest file in the set with fine results. A larger file would of done it faster though. Hard to say if this is a good value. If you only need one or two files, you will probably pay about the same as the full set and may never use the other files in the set! Only time will tell on how I feel overall about the set, but thought a photo showing the size and teeth may help?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Homeowner-grade - and that's not a bad thing These are not the best files you can buy. But then, the whole set costs less than one 'pro' file, and you are getting just about every size and shape there is. For infrequent 'homeowner' use, that is much more useful than having one really good file that doesn't fit the job. Likewise, for infrequent use, you could expect these to last a lifetime, and if they don't, at this price, you can't complain! Some of mine came with a slight bow to them, which I actually find useful at times. Otherwise easily straightened in a vise with hand pressure.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK for fooling around - but.... Before i bought this set, I had never used anything but Nicholsons. so i never realized that files could be warped. Each of the Mill files is non-planar (warped) such that it would be unusable to "level" a surface. They are sharp, though, and probably plenty good for knocking burrs off edges, sharpening lawn-mower blades, and axes, and so forth, but now I'm going to have to go back to HomeDepot and buy a couple of Nicholsons like I should have done in the first place. I'll keep these for loaners. I wonder what the people who wrote all the rave reviews I see above are using them for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable Value This is probably the best ten bucks you could spend on tools in the store. I am not an expert of files, but they get the job done and I am completely satisfied.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Handles are bad The attachable handles do not grip the file and fall off with the slightest tension. The files are sharp but the handle is a waste of time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for house work. I bought these for coping trim, the size assortment and especially the price was well worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good file set for repairing rifle stock Nice set of files for woodworking. The round file, it is coarse and sharp, does an excellent job of removing wood. The bigger half round file is very good for finishing and smoothing. The little half round has it's own handle and is good for finishing/smoothing. The two triangle files, the little one has it's own handle, work well for wood with medium bite from the teeth. The reason I bought the set was for the 4-in-1 rasp. Turns out that the rasp is the only one with a manufacturers marking and mine says Nicholson. A note on the handles: there are two loose handles for the majority of the files, the two smaller files have their own handles cast to the file and are not moveable. The fine toothed flat files are better suited for finishing metal, such as putting a new edge on your putty knife. There are no teeth on the edge of the flat files. If you want to dress your shovel or lawn mower, get a more aggressive file.
