Rated 5 out of 5 by Got this set for $99 Great set of tools I bought this 185 piece set & portable tool box today for $130! February 20, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by A nice set; know what you are getting I know a tool set like this is an important investment for most people, so I want to give some good info here (also to make up for all the product reviews I never write), but I also wanted to comment on some complaints from another review. First, the wrong photo is posted for the set being advertised here, which is model # ending in TSN. The photo Home Depot has posted is probably of the older discontinued 185-piece set. I have included photos of the actual set you would be getting. Notice that the ratchets are different, and the screwdriver is shaped and colored differently. However I’m pretty sure you are getting all the same functioning pieces, albeit with some cosmetic differences. If you buy at the store, the photo on the outside of the case is correct. My biggest issue with the set that I can tell so far is that you get no holders/organizers for the allen wrenches, like the grey ones you see in the old photo. They just come loose in 2 Velcro pouches. As far as the tool quality, I’m no expert, but it seems fine to me. Having not used the tools yet, my assessment is obviously limited, but really I think quality is virtually a non-issue for most tool sets these days (of all brands) since competition has made the lifetime warranty quite standard. I will say that the ratcheting action of the ratchets seems very smooth and tight. And speaking of, one of the other reviewers mentioned the release button on them. Yes, on the ¼ inch ratchet, when a socket is attached, the button surface drops to flush with the ratchet head surface, and on the 3/8 and ½ inch ones it actually drops to below flush. I personally don’t consider this an issue, but I suppose if you have abnormally large finger-tips it may be. But remember, a release button that sinks to at least flush cannot possibly catch or grind on anything when the ratchet is used in a tight area. What I really love about this set is the case. You are getting a 185-piece set in the size of a briefcase. If you are carrying it long distances, it will hang normally at your side and you don’t have to kill your delts like you will when carrying a fatter box with drawers or whatever. The pieces are consolidated very tightly in the case so that very little space is wasted, yet there is no organizational sacrifice (withstanding the allen wrenches), and the size of every single socket/wrench is labeled on the case. The above mentioned reviewer also says that none of the pieces snap into the case. I can assure you that this is not true. What’s happening is that the tools in the top half of the case all firmly snap into place, while most of the sockets and the 3 ratchets in the bottom half do not. So, unless you open up the case backwards, you will never have a problem; with the way the case latches together on the outside you will always know top from bottom unless you have a serious attention deficit disorder. Would you open up your briefcase upside down? Is this set perfect? No, it could use some minor improvements concerning detailed conveniences, but considering the market as a whole, and the number of tools you are getting in such a small space, I think you are getting nice bang for your buck. Rated 3 out of 5 by very useful First thing I noticed was how all the torx, hex, and smaller sockets fall out of their spots EVERY time you move this case, which seems to be the same with all cased sets. It would be nice if you didn't have to sort out the set before each use. The ratchets are a little heavy, but feel very strong, and all of the tools in the box are marked VERY well, and are easy to read. This is a great set for the average Joe looking to do general repairs around the house, or small jobs on the car. October 24, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Not made in USA First thing I notice the product made in China. Tool box design not good. Need middle cover. No detail for tool list, on box said the tool name is pd 1 to 5. but on the tool said ph 1 to 5. Confusing, start with pd, ph, pz. P for what. I do not know I got the wrong one or not. Rated 5 out of 5 by Quality at a much lower price 185 pieces is more then enough to get the job done. I can grab this case and go not spending a lot of time looking for the right socket. The star pattern is pretty standard in the industry on the sockets but I wouldn't be with out them. The socket wrench has 72 teeth so no matter how tight the site is you are working you should be able to crank down on the bolt. The chrome is easy to clean and actually looks great. But the most important feature is the lifetime warranty. You can take these back forever to get a replacement. That used to be only on the more expensive sockets sold by their competition. I had some problems with the sockets falling out of the plastic holders in the case but no big deal. All in all worth the money for all the tools you get. October 4, 2013
