Customer Questions & Answers

how do you thread the strap on the tool? there are no visual or written instructions

Asked by: gordon
You have to either watch a U Tube video or look carefully at the back of the package and just follow the pictures of the strap. It took me a couple of tries before I got it right.

I actually had some difficulty the next time I used this wrench, not the fault of the wrench. Must have put my whole house filter housings on too tight, even though I used plumber's grease on the rubber gaskets. I couldn't get the filter housing off. The "trick' I found out that works was to use a metal pipe, about 2 to 3 feet long or whatever is close to that, on the wrench handle for "leverage". The instructions for setting up the strap wrench was a little difficult but following the picture on the back of the package you'll eventually get it right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great strap wrench Great strap wrench. I agree with others that there are no instructions for proper use, but as with any wrench, the manufacturer probably thinks that if you are buying the wrench, you know how to use it already. There are a lot of incorrect ways to use this, but only one correct way. When used correctly it grips even polished fittings well and the long handle provides plenty of torque. The more torque you apply, the tighter it grips. This type is far superior to the ubiquitous plastic handled/rubber strap wrenches most people are likely familiar with. If you don't know how to use this type of wrench, youtube "how to use a strap wrench", or some variant and you will find some pretty good instructional videos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works for whole house filters As others have stated, the instructions aren't the greatest. I played with it according to the instructions on the back of the package and finally got the strap together correctly. I'm using it on some whole house filters that are approximately 9 to 10 inches in diameter. The package says it's only good up to 6-3/4 inches, but the Home Depot sales person said he has one at home for the same use and it works. Worked for me and my whole house filters were on TIGHT.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple, well made tool I needed to tighten a 4" PVC threaded fitting. The cast aluminum handle and polyester strap are strong and should last forever. Wish the instructions were better, but easy to find a you tube video online.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy construction, works great, enexpensive. This is probably the best strap wrench I have found in this price range. The only one that would be better is made by Rigid and costs about 5 times as much. It works great on anything larger than about 1" dia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No instructions required I used these in the military, it's a very simple strap wrench and anyone with any amount of mechanical ability can figure it out. Very sturdy tool.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Acceptable Strap Wrench As the title says, this tool is acceptable. Nothing truly outstanding. It performed the job in the end, but the strap had some difficulty mustering enough friction. It could just need to be broken in before there is enough grip.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Made Well, Works - Terrible Instructions I was hesitant to buy this based on the two previous reviews, but I needed one, didn't want to wait to buy one with better reviews online, and this was all I could find locally (other than a plastic one). I agree with a previous reviewer in that the instructions are terrible. They provide two pictures on the back, but I have never used a strap wrench and wasn't quite sure how to make this one work. I found a video online and after that it easy to use. I used it on a union check valve that was supposed to be hand tightened, but it had been painted and I could not get it to break by hand. This, with some elbow grease, helped me loosen it. I didn't have any issue with slippage. I also used it on a container of PVC cement that I could not get opened. It was a little more difficult for that use (not sure it's really intended for it) because of the shape of the container. However, after carefully putting the strap on the lid and being able to keep it down on it, it broke real easy. This has some heft to it, so it doesn't feel cheap, like a plastic one. The nylon never slipped on me for either use above. If they would have provided better instructions I would have given it 5 stars.
