Answer:
You can place the uprights at 24" apart, thus allowing installation in a 24" wide ceiling joist application.

Answer:
We did not design the product to specifically work with steel studs. It is likely that you can still mount the unit to a steel stud but you would either need to speak to a fastener company or the stud manufacturer to found out the proper fasteners for mounting to that type of stud.

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 103 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic item Super easy to install with one person, although two is even better. The product was mostly assembled right out of the box, so that sped up installation. I suggest, as others have, that having a drill/driver to sink the bolts into the studs is a nice thing to have on hand. It took about 30 minutes to install, and I'm very pleased with the product quality and price. July 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Does what it says, but get a nut driver for drill. Works well, and is a one person job. But. Get a nut driver for your drill. Trying to put in the 3" Lag screws into the ceiling joists with a ratchet is, literally, a pain. Finish was a bit scratched up when removing screws to adjust the height, but nothing you will notice after it's up. Would have been nice if the panels were marked, though. It doesn't really say, but 2 panels MUST go on the outer edges to be properly secured. Took me a couple of minutes to figure out why the bolts wouldn't go in like the pictures. But, it is up, and holding a 70 lb pre-lit Xmas tree, so was worth the hassle. Have a second to put up when I figure out where. April 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by BEST PURCHASE EVER I tried one and liked it so much I bought four more. I used two in my garage and three in my storage shed. The hardest part is finding the trusses so you get a secure anchor in wood. Once that is achieved, it's a simple matter of putting the pieces together. The installation in the shed with bare rafters was much easier. The height can be adjusted to accommodate different spaces. I can't recommend these highly enough, especially for the price. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Thumbs down New bracket design not good for weight should have left old design alone if it ain't broke don't fix it May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Only ceiling storage rack to have If you need a sturdy ceiling rack thats easy to install and will handle a load this is for you. And it looks good in your garage also. Gives a clean professional neat look April 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Storage I needed extra space for Christmas decorations, autumn decorations, etc. so I purchased these Ceiling Storage Units. It says they're 75% pre-assembled but that's not accurate, I don't believe. However, at 63 years old I was able to install them entirely by myself. It took me more that the 1 hour they propose, but I did not do either of them all at once. I would do a little on the storage unit installation, then go to class or do something else. Climbing on the ladder makes my feet tired. There was nothing difficult at all about the installation. The containers shown are the smaller ones, 10 gallons, I think. And each would hold 12. I wouldn't try to put a huge container up there by myself, so that's perfect for me. November 11, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good product, great price These are great ceiling mount racks. I used 4 mounted side by side along the front of the garage, above the garage door. They were relatively easy to install, but a bit time consuming. The instructions have you drive in a setting nail prior to using the lag screws on the ceiling mounts, but hammering in a nail around the bracket while on a ladder looking up is not an easy task. I found it easier just to measure, mark, and pre-drill the holes for the lag bolts. My studs were 24 inches apart, which makes it 24 inches between the support beams. I simply mounted all of the support beams, then assembled the shelves across, one by one. I was concerned about the shelves that met directly in between two support beams, but the zip ties included seem to work just fine. February 17, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Work as intended I bought four of these to span across my ceiling above the garage door. I first put up 2x4s so I could mount these in any location. They work great. I have already loaded them up with boxes. March 22, 2016
