Product Overview

HydroPickers makes it easy for the average consumer to get started with hydroponic gardening. There are several advantages in hydroponic growing with Hydro Pickers. First, by allowing control over nutrients, Hydro Pickers can lead to higher yields due to concentrated plant nutrition. Higher yields can also be achieved because hydroponics shortens the growing cycle, essentially doubling the number of growing seasons. Hydro Pickers can be used in places where in-ground gardening isn't possible. Hydro Pickers provide the plant roots constant access to oxygen and as much water as they need - no over or under watering. Lastly, since the Hydropickers planter has built in wheel casters, it enables moving the planter to take the best advantage of the sun's solar rays on a patio, deck or any other location. Indoor growing necessitates the need for indoor lighting (not included). The resin used in this product is a food safe High Density Polyethylene. It is chemically inactive, BPA free and Phthalate free and is perfectly safe for growing edible garden vegetables. The resin also includes chemically inert UV additives to prevent long term degradation from direct sunlight.

  • Proven to produce higher-yield growing
  • No soil needed
  • Needs only nutrient-treated water, nutrients included in kit
  • Water stays in system no constant watering
  • Eco-friendly nutrients stay in system
  • Little maintenance, no weeding, easy to harvest
  • Can be used where in-ground gardening is not possible
  • Plants not included
  • Warning: Will grow tomatoes and other vegetables and plants extremely fast and easily

Answer:
Put a stake in the ground as close to the tub as possible. On a hard surface use something that can support a stake maybe thick Styrofoam. I put a stake between the wood boards on my deck. Good Luck.

Size and circulation

I have been studying hydroponics for awhile, but have not done more than dabble. This kit looks interesting, but I am curious about water circulation. Most hydroponics have a way to circulate the water to keep the nutrients moving and to keep the water from getting stagnant. Does this kit come with a pump of some sort?
Also, I do not see any mention of the dimensions. Can someone tell me what size it is? How many "seedlings" will it hold? Does it have a drain plug?

Answer:
There is no pump and the water stays stagnant. I haven't had a problem growing my lettuce and tomatoes though. There is no drain plug so when I change out the water, I have to dump it out. There is a tube on the top to add more water to the the tray below. It holds 5 pots. I like that its on wheels so I can move it as the sun direction changes throughout the year.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy set up! I found the HydroPickers Hydroponic Grow Box really easy to set up and prepare for my seedlings. It comes with everything you need as shown in one of my pictures. Just soak the coconut bricks, fill the container with water and add the nutrient to get the right ph, fill the baskets with the water soaked grow media (coconut bricks) and plant your plants! Or seeds! This is great for people in apartments, small or no yards, or horrible dirt like mine which is clay. Great too for people who are physically limited and cannot dig. Also, you can move it around for the best sun and shade during the day or week. Very easy to maintain. Water fill tube makes it easy to keep check on your water level. I'm really excited to see the progress of my plants in this! :O) April 1, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dead on arrival This grow bed a good idea but when it arrived it had cracks over the floor of the box I determined this to be direct cause of poorly set plastic stress marks near the cracks indicate plastic density changes and likely missed inspection process so I speak of my unit alone so I have repurposed some of the parts like the soil amended a soil round a tree the baskets coin storage and the tub tool storage I did attempt to fill the cracks but failed to hold water..... Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hydroponic Grow Box I was excited to find this kit offered by Home Depot. I have always wondered about but never taken the time to actually own and use a hydroponic growing kit. I received this grow box and figured that I would need to purchase the growth medium, nutrients, Ph testing kit and of course the seeds. Well, the kit comes complete with everything minus the seeds or seedlings and water. It is simple to put together, maybe 5 minutes. The longest length of time for setting it up was filling it with water. I started the set on a Friday evening and it is now a Tuesday and no germination yet but I am certain the seeds I planted, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, beef steak tomato, spinach and lettuce will germinate and grow. This is great teaching project for families with children. April 1, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Interesting Project! I had never attempted this sort of gardening before. The entire thing is plastic and light weight. The assembly instructions were simple and it was great to have everything but the water and the plants in the kit! I had a friend assemble and plant with me - we also planted 2 traditional planters with soil to compare growth this season. The only down side would be that despite instructions instinct was to add more water- other than that the process was easy to understand and easy to follow. April 9, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy growing for small spaces The grow box is easy to put together. It is made out of sturdy plastic. The top part is made out of thinner plastic. You do have to soak the coconut bricks for a couple of hours. I soaked mine overnight. The coconut material is what you will plant your seeds or plants in. There isn't a need for soil. The hardest part is getting the fertilizer combination correct. This grow box is great for small areas and dry climates. June 21, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Basic Hydroponic Gardening Kit Being an avid gardener, but never trying hydroponics I was pretty excited about the prospects of this system. Upon receiving the kit it was pretty basic with very inexpensive parts. For one, the grow box shouldn't be abused because it could crack also one of the casters wouldn't snap into the grow box. Taking instructions literally can cause problems and this is what happened to me. The top deck doesn't snap into the grow box. Then there's filling the grow box with water, 2 options here, either fill the box with the 7.5 gallons of water and add the nutrient and wait till you have soaked ALL the grow media in a 5 gallon bucket/pail over night and scoop it out of the pail and into the pots, the instructions say “Grow Media” not "Grow Medias". Or add 2 gallons of water to the box, then slowly pour the soaked medias into the pots. Somewhat less messy and you're not wasting water. Then add the nutrients to obtain the proper pH by lifting one of the pots and stir. On the second option you do have to move the “Grow Media” to make room for your plants, which to me is a lot easier than having water spilling all over the place. Keep in mind when looking at the picture these plants were brought in 2” pots so they were already big. I also live in Upstate NY where it seems winter doesn't want to leave, still dropping into the upper 30's (5/5/2014). After 2 weeks the plants are healthy and I saw some growth on the broccoli and the pepper. With careful follow up on the ph and the water, the plants will grow. May 6, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It works! and makes urban gardening easier. We are actually seeing results utilizing this sytem. The best part is that I did not have to lug 17 bags of soil to our fourth floor patio. The set up was simple and we had to overcome some serious rain after setting up the system but things are moving allong. We are growing cucumbers, peppers, and lettuce. Makes urban gardening easier in a small space. We would buy again. Things Ithey could improve upon: 1. See through water level on the side marked with suggested water level 2. Easy access opening to test water 3. Drain to lower water when you get a hard rain. June 24, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by should hold water One would think that a self contained hydroponic system would be able to hold water right? Wrong, this one leaked .... in two different places. The instructions provided were not accurate or vague and led to me water logging the coconut coir that I had to strain to use or wait for it to dry out enough to use. I got around the problems and will see how it will do but not worth eighty bucks in my opinion. July 23, 2014
