Answer:
Ideal told me to cut a 12 foot cable. Sounds like you should do the same or just buy the safety cable. Make sure you check the ends of the cables they sell. They have to be what you need. I have no clue why they make a 12' 6" cable with loops at both ends and then tell you to cut them!

The 12 foot extension cable description says it has a "Closed loop at one end...and •"Includes S hooks and brackets".. It appears that both ends are "looped". Is that not true?

And how is one supposed to make sure the connections at both ends are tight without cutting off one of the loops??

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Garage door works great. Repair company wanted $500 to replace my cables and pulleys I did it myself for $32. It now works better than it has for the 14 years that I've been at this house.. December 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by as expected for home depot The hinges are superior to the hinges that were replaced. Much heavier gauge steel. The cable was a good replacement for the frayed cable. October 18, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Garage Door Extension Cable Most garage door extension steel cables were 1/8 in diameter, these are the one they sell on the Store. I order this set online because they are stronger 5/32 in diameter, my garage door weights about 130 lbs and wanted to replace the exact stock extension steel cables. They are relatively cheap, very easy to install but you can only buy them online. April 7, 2015

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good quality cables These are good quality cables for your garage doors. They come with the loop on one end already which is a bonus and what's better is they are super strong so they'll hold up under pressure. January 17, 2009
