The wire is to connect the sensor to the receiver. This way you can put the sensor close to where water may be detected and the receiver can be put higher so as it does not get wet.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by So Far, So Good I've installed one of these flood water & overflow alarms over a sump pump. The sending unit is on the sump pump cover with the long, attached wire running up to the 9V battery-powered receiver which is simply setting on a concrete shelf. I used a lithium battery so I don't have to change it for a while. As the instructions recommended, I tested the unit before doing anything and it worked fine. It can be set to sound "a tune" or an alarm sound...whichever you prefer. Either way, it's plenty loud. I've rated nearly everything as "good" only because it hasn't sounded the alarm by itself for any reason. Either way, It *looks* like it'll work fine. We'll see. April 1, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job but with a notation This was easy to install and works as advertised. The only little issue is that the sensor is to be placed at a level to detect a water level such as a wall. I have it under the sink and want to know if any waters leaks on the floor. It the sensor is placed with the suction cup on the floor it won't detect water until it is higher than the sensor base. To solve the problem I put the sensor pads face down on the floor (suction cup up) and taped it down but so water would hit the sensor pads. Works fine. May 19, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for my intent , A Mcguyver type project. This was perfect for the price and how I intended to use it. Washing machine drain overflowed into unfinished basment. Not alot of water hit the ground before I shut down the machine. Placed a narrow tall plastic trash can below the drain trap( which is on the wall behind the washer) area. Placed sensor unit into bottom of trash can. Issue solved . November 11, 2014
