are these universal hinges?

Asked by: NavyBean
Navy, These are not hinges like the ones that hold segments of the door together; they are placed at the bottom left and right corners of a garage door. A roller on a shaft goes into that tube you see, and the "button" behind that tube is to hook up the cables that go to springs that make lifting the door easier. They will fit on a door that is 1.5-2 inches thick. Sorry to sound like a kindergarten teacher, but on this site it's more helpful to more people if I stick to basics. Hope it helps.

Why is all the hardware available online only when I need my garage door to open now not after delivery in a week and a half?

Asked by: BBBB
1. Because there are a great many different doors out there, and keeping two for every kind makes for a vast inventory that ties up money that may serve better elsewhere. 2. Because, like me, many will purchase this type of stuff with the best of immediate intentions, only, like me, to have weather and life in general conspire to delay you by 2 weeks to a month anyway. 3. If you're handy, work around it. For wood, drive a shouldered 1/4" screw with a washer at the fat end, right where the old bracket attachments were, loop your cable end over it and hook the door back up. Do the same for steel, except use a shoulder bolt with washers to stiffen the metal door against tear out. Replace with the brackets when there's more time and kinder weather.

Roller Shaft Size

What is the size of the Roller shaft. My old doors Have 1 1/4" inch rollers with a 5/16 shaft and the New Standard is 2" rollers with 7/16 shafts? Will these work with a 3 1/2" stem and 5/16 shaft? James in Lincoln, NE
Asked by: SpecialTOrder
1. The tube on the bracket that takes a roller (not included) takes a 7/16" roller shaft with room to spare. Not sure what the excess play a 5/16" shaft would do, but it would want to rack a lot promoting excess wear and possible roller pop-out. 2. 3.5 inches in length from the roller "head" to the plain end should be OK so long as there's not much side play in your door. I'm using longer. A little overhang on the plain end is no big deal. 3. Roller diameter: my biggest concern would be the size of the track. You need to leave a little clearance so the roller doesn't touch both sides of the track. I'm compromising at 1.75". Hope that helps.

Having an enclosed tube across the entire width of this bracket is much better than the one I'm replacing which just has a loop at each end and free space in between which allows the guide wheel axle to slip out and go way out of line. When that happens the door jams. These new brackets work much better. I did have to drill some new holes -not a big deal.

Severely rusted/corroded, mine sawed their way through the cable loops on my garage door. While they can be attached with the included bolts, (recommended) you can use lag bolts that are just shy of the total thickness of the door for a repair that doesn't show from the outside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As advertised Had to build a custom sized garage door. These were the only items (i.e. hinges, springs, etc) that had to be ordered on line. They are decently built and do what they are supposed to do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for the job We have a 30 year old house, which has it's original wood garage door. It's in great condition, but cracked, jolted, squeaked and popped when we opened and closed it. We installed a new garage door opener, replaced the weather-stripping along the bottom, replaced springs, cables and all the hinges. We bought these bottom brackets online since they weren't available in store. Don't wait until you're ready to do your repairs to order these. Plan ahead-they have to be sent to the store or your home. The brackets are great and worked perfectly. Instructions were clear. I took a picture hopefully so one could tell how it all goes together, cable, too.
