I just returned the unit to Home depot. To answer your question specifically the ice begins melting as soon as it pops out of the ice maker. It melts into a reservoir underneath the "ice" and is used to make more ice. The ice at the bottom of the relatively small tray is just pieces (waiting to finally turn to water). The ice at the top will always be there (assuming water is in the unit), its just not a full tray of usable ice because it is in a continuous melting and reusing process. I felt the insulation was inadequate because the ice melted too quickly and I could only use the ice at the top of the tray.
My other problems were heat generated by the cooling process and the noise of the fan.
These problems are probably not unique to this brand. Read Less

The ice will make and make til the bin is full: if you do not empty the bin, it will gradually melt
and remake more ice, unless it needs water. it does not keep ice frozen for a long time.

Answer:
I always empty the bucket once it's full. I either store the made ice in a freezer bag or use it for drinks. The ice that is stored in the freezer bag last as long as ice made in an ice tray. The ice I use for drinks lasts about the same as ice from an ice tray.

Hard to describe. There are rods in the top and the ice forms around the tips. The rods leave a hole when they drop off.

Hello MoWhite,
The ice maker has an internal reservoir to which water is added. With water in the reservoir the machine just has to be plugged in. I hope this helps.

26 lb. Freestanding Ice Maker in Black is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 66.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad experience I order IGLOO Freestanding Ice Maker online... It came on date it was supposed to... The box looked as if it had been retaped, and I told my husband I thought it was a returned item.... He said it was supposed to be new, so try it.... The ice maker made one full basket of ice and then we turned it off... The next morning we plugged it up and it never made anymore ice... It just would not work... We were very disappointed because we bought it for our rv camper.

First, the unit generates a great deal of heat. Since the only place for me to put this was on the bar area, I felt the heat might effect the wine that was nearby. Second, the fan was loud and ran constantly. Since this unit was close to our area where we watch TV and entertain it became and annoyance. Finally the most important reason was that the ice melted too fast. It was melting when the ice popped out of the ice maker into the holding tray. The insulation seemed inadequate and the ice melted very quickly. I had hoped to make ice in advance for parties, pick nicks, tail gating etc. You can never use this unit for making and saving ice for later use. If the noise would not bother you, and you had no plans to make ice for later use, it does make ice quickly (and melts quickly), and worked as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completely Satisfied This product is an excellent alternative to an in-fridge ice maker. The only problem I had, which was a very minor one, was that the "cubes" are a bit wet when they are shoveled into the basket and tend to clump together after you transfer them to the freezer. This was such a minor a problem that I hesitate to mention it. That being said, I love the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE THIS PRODUCT We love our ice maker and run it about everyday. The ONLY problem we had with it was it never seems to freeze entirely. When we empty the bucket, there is still water in the ice so when we put it in the freezer it freezes to the ice, making an ice lump that we have to use the ice pick on. That is what we were trying to get away from. I looked and looked for a number to call to ask about this and never saw a number so maybe someone can answer this for us.

What a piece of garbage bought it brand new through home-depot on-line (paid an excessive shipping fee to get it by Christmas) and it did not work out of the box. Home Depot's customer service is garbage too. Went to return to the Bedford Park, IL. store and received even more horrible service. It was like the girl (Adrianna) didn't even want to do her job. Stay away from this store, they are not customer service friendly, returning this was like pulling teeth.

Yes I agree with others it does have wet cubes and when you put them in a bag and put it in the freezer they stick together, but it is easy to break them apart. I use it to brew my iced tea in an automatic iced tea maker and it is great. I cannot believe how fast it makes ice cubes! It has really added to our life in a positive way. I love our new Igloo ice maker!
