Answer:
You are correct and that would be possible. Perhaps the engineers chose battery power so the unit could be used with more types of doorbells such and battery powered wireless chimes. Today's batteries last a very long time, however when they do go dead the extender will fail. You may not know it failed for awhile unless you detect the main chime sound while you are close to the extended chime.

Answer:
Batteries are required because it doesn't connect with wires to the existing doorbell, it uses a microphone to "hear" when the doorbell rings, then relays it to the plugged in receiver.

The inside unit, which responds to the inside door chime, uses batteries and the outside chime unit is electric.
I tried another wireless unit.... it just didn't work. This is better. No second doorbell button, the chime is loud enough not to miss, and works every time without fail.... Works great !

It's possible the two wireless transmitters could be on the same channel and interfere or the signal from the extender may possibly retrigger the original wireless chime causing a sort of feedback effect. Chances are very good everything will work fine but I would preserve all packing, docs, etc. in case it doesn't and you need to return the extender to the store. Read Less

Answer:
Definitely YES. Works great in our two story home. Place extender pickup on top or near original chime. When original doorbell chimes, the acoustic pickup of the extender picks up the sound acoustically which triggers it's wireless transmitter to signal the remote chime to sound.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 32 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Finally I can hear the doorbell Bought house where the front door is in the addition which is separated from the house by the old exterior cement block wall. Have been through 3 wireless doorbells but had to keep the ringer in the addition and I could not hear it from living room. This finally solved the problem. Since it comes with its own ringer, I now have a ringer at each end of the house. You may have to experiment with placement, but I could not be happier. You simply attach one part to your original ringer, then plug in the second ringer wherever you want it. December 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great after 3 months Installed extended chime in basement of two story home. Worked immediately out of the box. Very pleased. It has been 100% reliable. I am now going to purchase a second unit for the top floor. Some people complain about it not being loud enough. Mine seemed to be normal volume, just as loud as the chime that came with the house. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what we were looking for The door bell extender was just what we needed. We could not hear the door bell in our bedroom and bath. This was the perfect solution. So easy, put the battery in and place that part on the top of existing door bell box,and plug the other part in any outlet in our bedroom, it works great. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fanntastic purchase This is the second set, of this product, that I purchased from Home Depot. Love it's convenience. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works very well This unit does its job perfectly. All you have to do is stick the transmitter up next to your existing door chime and it "hears" the doorbell ring and repeats it. However, I wanted a strobe light as well as the extra loud chime. So I combined this with their wireless doorbell of the same brand that has a strobe unit. It turns out the transmitter from this unit and the receiver from that unit are compatible and work fine together. That meant I had to buy two units to get the one I wanted, though. I wish they packaged the strobe unit with the chime extender kit. August 11, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Didn't work, but purchased another on line that is fine. This was the only door chime extender available in the store. When we set it up at home, it did not work. I wound up purchasing the item on line and it performs well. We may have just lucked out with a broken one to begin with. I do believe we eventually purchased the same make/model as the one at Home Depot, so I can say that we are happy with the purchase. The "poor" rating only refers to the fact the original one did not work. We still shop at Home Depot and have every expectation their products and service remain very high, as always. There was no problem returning the item. I would recommend this item - as long as you don't get the non-working one! November 4, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by note for using multiple extenders This works great! The only thing I would like to note is that if you want to use several in your house (we have one for the basement and one for the upstairs), they all operate on the same frequency, which doesn't seem to be something that the user can adjust. So whichever one is slightly closer to the door chime will pick up the signal first, and the other will remain silent. The solution I found for this was to set them up like a chain, by putting the second extender's sensor next to the first extender's chime, so the main chime sets off the first extender, which in turn sets off the second extender. Worked like a charm! December 4, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Fix ! I needed a doorbell to ring in my back yard. This product is excellent. It Amplifies my house door bell, and plenty loud enough to hear. So when a visitor comes and rings my front doorbell, this unit relays to back yard unit and chimes. Love It ! September 8, 2015
