Customer Questions & Answers

We want to get this pet door, but aren't sure what kind to get.

We have a Pella aluminum clad wooden sliding glass door. 78 3/8 high 93 wide. The sliding/opening door is outside the stationary door. Would the door for aluminum frames fit better? Is this one adaptable?
Asked by: Phil
They don't recommend you mix plastic and aluminum. This one fits 76.75 in. to 78.5 in. As long as your sliding door rides in a 1.5" track, it should fit. Most Home Depot stores have sample doors for you to look at. I don't think it matters whether the door slides inside or outside the stationary door, as the dog door is stationary itself. Hope that helps.

Need vinyl dog door pannel for patio slider, 2 to2 1/4 inch deep door frame

Hello, my vinyl sliding patio door is standard 76.75 H, Standard width.. but the Depth (outside to inside) of the door at frame is 2 1/4 inches. Do you have a dog door panel that will fit. Or is there an adapter/ insert that is made to resolve "play" with a wider door frame? We have a standard aluminum doggie door panel 1 3/4 deep from our old house that fit, our old slider just fine. It fits height and width.. but just not thick enough (deep) way too much play. Need new vinyl doggie door for patio anyway so looking for replacement that fits correctly for year around use. Any help greatly appreciated.
Asked by: Deanne
This unit is 1.5" deep. If you door is any thicker, this unit will not fit snug. You could try getting filling in the gaps, but it may look cheesy. I'd write the manufacturer(s) and see if they have fatter ones, or can custom make one for you.

Can the current flap be changed to a SureFlap or other type of microchip flap?

The basic flap does not provide enough control of our indoor cats and dog and it seems that the SureFlap option is only available on aluminum frames. The mounting dimensions of the SureFlap door are 8 1⁄8" (W) x 9 3⁄16" (H) which is too big for the Ideal Pet medium door, but too small for the extra large door. Is there a way to install a microchip electronic flap on this pet door? Thanks!

How far up from the bottom does the pet door start?

My Newfoundland is 33 inches from the floor to his back. I need a vinyl door and I cant seem to find one big enough. Upon looking if I had a 23" door and it was 10" off of the floor I think it would work

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is there are some very small gaps around the flapper door. Very small it's really not too big a deal but I suppose if it was any tighter the door wouldn't flap or close right so maybe that's the way it has to be. Otherwise I really like this door unit with the thermal pane glass. I especially like I don't have to get up at 4 AM to let the dogs out

I watched the installation video which made the installation a breeze. I have experienced -15 degree weather since the door was installed and you could feel a slight draft by the dog flap and on the sliding door, opposite end from the Ideal door. The draft was minimal and overall I am very pleased with the dog door

Best idea, she is in and out of the house 40 times a day. Even lets herself out in the middle of the night. Other than the wear on the 10 plus year old Pella patio door it looks like it grew there. Having two patio doors I didn't use any of the lock hardware. One door for people and one for the puppy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good door, looks great Door looks great. The door is a bit thick for the channel of my door but it does sit in securely. This causes the header to be about a half inch short but that is not a big deal for me. Other than that he install was pretty easy. When I recieved the door the package was in good condition but one of the nylon "springs" was broken. I called the support number and they shipped me new ones which I received in two days. I've had the door two weeks, and it works and looks great. I previously had a dog door with a single flexible flap. It took a few days for my dog to get used to it, but now she loves the wider door.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Door I did a lot of research before deciding on this door. I needed the most weather tight and energy efficient door possible and when I saw that this door had those features and that it was made just for vinyl patio sliders, my decision was made. It fits beautifully and was not too hard to install. I am a 61 year old woman, who is fairly handy, and was able to do it by myself. Having another person to help would have made it easier, but I was able to manage alone. Honestly, the hardest part was the last step of trying to make my slider's lock work with the new dog door. It took a bit of trail and error to get it to line up and latch, but I was finally successful. This door is used by my 4 dogs ranging in size from a 9 pound Chihuahua to a 50 pound Australian Shepherd. The flap is definitely heavier and harder to move than their previous door, but they all quickly learned. The porch that the door exists onto is a bit lower than the house, so I did add a cement block as a step to help the Chihuahua. The door looks very nice and matches my slider perfectly. I am very pleased with it!
