The door itself is a lot heavier than any of the other flaps I have seen while shopping around. The magnet holds well.
Out here we get 20+mph winds with some frequency, and occasionally the door will blow open, and once I saw the wind hold the door open, but that was a very strong wind, and it didn't last long.
Both dogs(that we have now adopted) came from a shelter that allowed them access to the outdoors via a dog door as flimsy as most I have seen while shopping around. I could tell this door was a bit better because all of the dogs we have had over here(4 so far) have been hesitant to go through the door at first, as if they weren't expecting it to have as much resistance that this one has.
I imagine if a big enough snake wanted in bad enough, or some other critter just had to see the inside of the house, they might be able to push the door open with some effort.
This door comes with a locking cover panel which works well. I have been putting the dogs out during the day and securing the door with the sliding panel which also helps keep wind and other critters out, and then letting them inside before dark. They sleep by the door, so I leave it unlocked at night so they can patrol the yard and do their business at will. Read Less

Answer:
You will need to add some extra framing for support. You could glue and screw the framing in place because the trim on the dog door would cover your screws holding the wood to the overhead door panel.

I installed the door through an outside wall which is thicker than a standard door. I want to have a flap on the outside of the house as well as the inside....

Has anyone used this on the inside of a wall? I"m considering using it that way and framing out the 4" opening and trimming out the outside wall. Wouldn't this work? I'm not liking the double door types.

Answer:
Howdy Lonnie,
This pet door is made to be mounted in the inside portion of a door.
If you wanted to mount directly to a wall you would need to have a frame of that opening built to mount the flap.
Happy framing,
Coach Dave

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 98 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Good for one old dog, not for puppies I bought 2 doors, one for me and one for a friend. I installed both and it was not very hard. One turned out to be smoke/tinted and the other clear. Wish I had know as I would have put the tinted one facing the sun. Anyway, my friend has big adult dog and his door is still in great shape. I on the other hand have 4 dogs and 3 of the 4 are puppies. I installed the door when the mom was pregnant. The now 9 month old puppies run through the door. They are in and out all day, so it gets lots of use. But after only 9 months and the door flap is falling apart. I have duck tape holding the panels together now and I see I can buy a replacement door for only $25. I do not need new panels, just the rubber "I" beams that hold the 3 flaps together. If I am forced to spend 1/3 the price of the door every 9 months, I am going to look for a better door. December 25, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Didn't last Door panels didn't last 8 months before they stared falling apart. Then they want to charge you to buy new ones. Other brands with the standard thick rubber flap last years or more. May 21, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Piece of JUNK!! It fell apart in less than three months and the company will not honor the warranty!! The flaps failed and the bar holding the door fell off! Do Not Buy Ideal Pet Doors!! May 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Terrific pet door - very quiet when used by the dogs, keeps out the cold This is our third pet door, and the second one of this type. Our other brand pet door makes a very loud sound when pets come in and out, a fact that was pointed out by the very knowledgeable store sales associate. He showed why the other type was so loud, and this one quiet. They were out of stock in the store, so I ordered online. Unit arrived promptly. Installation was a challenge in the metal exterior door. I didn't have my metal blade for my circular saw, so I had to cut the opening by hand with a small 10" Stanley mini hack saw with a dull blade in both sides of the door, at a rate of 10 minutes per inch. The cut took hours. June 16, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Dog Door Great experience so far. Purchased online, promptly shipped, clean packaging. Installation was easy. Our 3 month old puppy took to it quickly. Has stood up to strong winds very well. Writing this review has been the most difficult thing. March 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Dog Door Generally a good door. Better than my last one which was made of plastic, this has a metal flange. The biggest problem is that the flange is fairly narrow and screws go in very close to the opening in the door. This makes it difficult to retrofit an old dog door of a different size as the hole for the opening must be pretty exact. August 4, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best door for the money Very simple to install, no drafts and it looks great .I love it and my dogs use it. Can't be happier. July 28, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Better by Comparison The Flexible Hard Flap Door Frame is better than the other products I have seen on the market. A strong wind like what we frequently experience here in Pueblo West, Colorado can/will push the flapper open occasionally, and sometimes when our dogs enter/exit through the door the flapper, it will not seat correctly, but it hasn't been that big of a deal yet(but this winter has been VERY mild for us, so if it were colder out, this may have been an issue). Overall, I would recommend this door versus the other products I have seen on the market. I bought a replacement flap right away because I didn't know how this one will hold up. Our dogs are in/out constantly, like little kids. We have had the door up about 3 weeks, so the jury is still out on whether or not the flap will hold up worth it's price..... I bought this Hard Flap Door Frame to replace the door that came with the XL Vinyl Pet Door Panel that installs into the sliding glass door, for those of us that have nowhere else to put a dog door. The flap that came with the Vinyl Pet Door Panel was as flimsy as can be and completely useless, so I bought this XL Hard Flap thinking that I could just swap it out from the Vinyl Pet Door Panel because they are both from the same manufacturer and they are both XL. That was not the case. The XL from the Vinyl Panel and the Hard Flap XL are two different XLs. Height-wise didn't make a difference, but I ended up having to buy a Dremel and completely make a mess out of the Vinyl Panel to make it fit width-wise. Don't know why they can't/don't/won't standardize their own products. Irritating. In my mind, this should have been an easy swap. For the what I paid for the Vinyl Panel, I don't know why this Hard Flap didn't come with it in the first place! *NOTE - The "Vinyl Panel" and this product that they are calling "Aluminum Frame" ARE compatible. In fact, it looks like they are made to go with each other(not including the size issue). March 15, 2016
