Aluminum Door

In the video, a wooden door was used. I have an aluminum door. Can I use a jigsaw to cute through an aluminum door? If not, what do I use?
Asked by: Sandra
It may be too late for you Sandra, but not for others with this same question. I also have a metal door, but I do not know if it is steel or aluminum. I was able to use a jigsaw to cut the door, but I had to do one side a time. I purchased a metal cutting blade for it and it got bent because it was hitting the other side of the door, but then I just cut it at the bend and straightened it out. It takes pretty precise measuring on both sides to get everything aligned properly since you should be cutting one side at a time, but it can be done. I removed the door and put it on wooden horses which made the task much easier. I tried to make the cuts while the door was still installed like the video shows, but that is not easy with a metal door like it would have been with wood. The instructions say not to place the bottom of the template below 4" from the bottom of the door, but I think with a metal door you can place it lower like I did. Mine was 2" from the bottom since I have two mini pigs (about 80 lbs each now so not so mini anymore and with their bellies only a couple inches from the floor) but their legs are very short so I am glad we had a metal door that I think supports a lower installation than is recommended. We also have a boxer who is much taller than the pigs, but his doghouse door is the same height so he is used to bending his legs to get through a door so I was ok with installing the door at this height.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Templete was off by 1/8 of an each all around We used the templete that comes with the dog door, we taped it to the door. We cut the opening and the dog door was to big, the opening too small. The templete was off by 1/8 all around. We had to file down the difference to get doggie door in, it was installed in a steel door, a little dangerous, sparks were flying. We had purchased two dog doors and both templetes were off a little. Double measure do not count on the templete and you will be fine. Now its in and works great, our extra large dogs are very happy with the new freedom.
