Customer Questions & Answers

After 1 year, my InSinkErator Badger 500 is not working. It is not clogged and just "humms" so I know it has electric.

Any suggestions?
Asked by: Brent
I am a woman, but Mine is doing the same thing. I strongly suspect that a piece 0f metal may be the culprit. I suspect a soda pop top found it's way down there. That can be repaired. I had it happen twice...I seem to never learn my lesson. I am waiting on my handyman to come and make it whole again. Good Luck.....Betty

If i am replacing a badger 5 with this 500, can i reuse the existing mounting ring and drain assembly?

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Doug
Yes you can; practice with the new one on the unit so you know how it works.

My 5 is leaking out the bottom. Took apart-the "sealed" metal part under the blades is rotted through. Is it replaceable

Asked by: Jes
Jes, I don't believe it is replaceable. There is a part1 & 2 video clip posted on youtube by Zabba 501 who shows how he fixed his rusted unit with using that flex seal rubber coating spray to seal the small pin holes. Depending on the size of your unit's rusted holes you may need to use something else like roofing tar. Hope this helps, Carl

Hi i have a badger 5 in my sink and i want to replace it. Can i replace any badger model?

Asked by: Kix
I replaced a Badger 5 with the Badger 500 and it fit to the sink perfectly. The unit was a little bit wider at the top so I had to cut the drain pipe from the disposal to the main drain by about 3/4".

I've only had this installed for a few days but it is reasonably quiet and works as designed. The installation was uncomplicated if you're used to working in close quarters. Don't forget that you will need plumbers putty to install the new sink drain plate. You will also need a cable clamp to secure the hardwired electric supply to the new unit and may need two wire nuts. The unit doesn't come with either. I recommend that you read the instruction before attempting to wire the unit. The wires are tucked tight against the wall of the casing and the temptation is to remove non-removable cardboard shielding looking for them.

I was a little hesistant at first because the old Badger was somewhat noisy. But to my surprise after the easy installation I found this Badger 500 to be fairly quiet. It does not come with a power cord nor cord strain relief. I was able to remove the power cord from the old disposal and re-purpose it on the new disposal. The new disposal works well.

Ordered online, being just a cubical guy it took some time to get the old unit out and get this one in. At last it is in! Hit the switch and got that electric motor noise that means it is not moving. Took the disposal Allen wrench tool and tried to spin the blades, it was tight as a drum, sounded like the motor section was full of tiny shreds of plastic. Kept pushing hard back and forth, hit reset etc so it was DOA. Took it back to Home Depot and the Customer Service lady was nice and refunded me, got another Badger 500 and this one worked. Works real good so far. If not for the first dud I would give it a 5 star.

I've had it only a few weeks, but I have had this brand for over 10 years. This was a replacement. It does meet my expectations, that's why I decided to replace it with the same brand,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great disposer I purchased this to replace the contractor model that was in the house when we bought it. It was NOT an Insinkerator product and so I was surprised that it lasted as long as it did. The Insinkerator Badger 500 was easy to install for me as I have done this before in other homes we owned in the past. The only thing I want you to remember is it does not come with a power cord so plan on either purchasing one at the same time you get the disposal or plan on using the one that was on the old one - not something that I would recommend.as you don't know how good the original cord is and why compromise your installation with old parts.

This is probably the 3rd InSinkErator disposal I have put in over the last 10 years. Unfortunately, not much other choices in brands readily available. I had previously purchased the smaller HP units, but decided to go up to this 1/2HP unit this time. It has been in place a month or so and is working fine. But, who knows over time whether the higher HP will help the unit last longer than my previous units from the same company. On the plus side, these are a relatively easy installation. Since I already had the same collar installed in my sink, I just re-used it rather than put in the new collar.

The item was easy to install because we were replacing with the same item. The cost was more than I wanted to pay. I had gone to HomeDepot.com and the price was much cheaper and the clerk said that they could not offer the same price but if I had ordered I could return to the store if necessary. I found that to be ridiculous and felt that the price should have been honored. Home Depot offers price matching for other stores but not match their own ordering center. I was very upset but was caught between a rock and a hard place because I needed it immediately and could not wait for order to be mailed.
