I am doing an automotive restoration project, and use the grinder to prep the metal for welding, then grind down welds. I have a 50ft hardline system in my garage with an Ingersol air filter. I grease and oil my air tools regularly. Still, this die grinder only lasted a few months. The warranty has been a pain. I drove 2hrs round trip to the service center Ingersol Rand told me to go to. A few days later I got a call from them letting me know they don't service this model. I have to go back and get it, or pay more in shipping than this thing is worth to get it back and ship it again to Texas. I was hoping the quality behind the IR name would keep me in the garage working, and not having to deal with down time trying to replace cheap tools. I am disappointed with the IR customer service and quality.

I currently have two of these in use. They are 1/3 HP and stronger than most of the less expensive units. So my guys asked me for more (they fight over them). This is where it gets interesting, my supplier can not get this 3101G. It is a retail only item. IR considers this item a throw away unit and does not offer replacement parts or service for it. But I like the grinder, I have not had either of them fail, and we use these things constantly, two shifts 5 days a week for at least a year. If these tools were inherently bad, they could not handle what we put them through for this long. The "like" grinder that IR does support and considers repairable is at least $20 more. Because our tools show such abuse in the form of regular use, we tend not to repair them, because the time and parts to do it in house is very close to a new unit. My experience is that "throw away" tools are either good or not. It is a gamble. The quality is usually very good, but the quality control is sometimes an issue. I like them and will continue buying them.
