Customer Questions & Answers

Can I use this to replace a 3-way switch? If not, what model do I need? Will it fit in a double box with a single pole switch next to it?

Asked by: DIY
Hello, the EI500 is not 3 way compatible. The model you would want for 3 way is ST01, and as long as you have a decora opening in the wall plate for the timer it will work. Thank you!

I have two black wires coming out of receptacle to hook up. Do I need all 4 wires on this timer to hook up or can I just hook up to the two black?

Asked by: dt
read the directions, repeatedly if necessary to understand the full meaning. One of those black wires may be the line (hot side) so determining which one is critical - also is info contained in the directions

Can i use this to replace an older timer that is in my garage to control two outside lights?

The timer is indoors, but the lights are outside on each side of the garage door.
Asked by: Chico
Maybe - this timer requires a Neutral wire to operate; if you are not certain that a Neutral is available in the switch box you could use the ST01K, which operates entirely from a replaceable battery and therefore does not require a Neutral.

Can this switch be used w/a 3 way switch, in place of one of them?

Asked by: Buddy
No. This switch is a single throw, single pole. This means you only get "ON" or "OFF". It will not support other or more complicated or shared switching circuits.

I have LED lights and the current Timer Switches I'm using leave a constant glow, even when turned off. Seems to be enough power that stays. ???

Asked by: BarryG1
Barry, This timer uses solid state switching as opposed to a mechanical switch or relay. Solid state switching, typically uses MOSFETs to activate a circuit may have a very small trickle or residual charge present (when not activated). It is very small. In most cases most loads eliminate (or drain) this incredibly small charge. In the case of LEDs, they are extremely sensitive and use very low power. It is possible for them to detect and illuminate from this very small charge. You can eliminate this phenomena by placing a resistor load (100K Ohm, 1/4 watt) across its output. That should be sufficient to kill off that charge.

15-Amp Decorator Auto-off In-Wall Digital Timer is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Functional product with fair price Easy to install. Works well. However the screen is tiny and dark. Difficult to read the screen during set up. I had to use a magnifying glass with flash light to set the program. When set, it works very well.

It works well , I use it for for exterior porch light . I like the on and off buttons on the front so that I can over ride the automatic function at any time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Might be a good product For some reason, when used with my electric system, this device causes the light it controls to blink on and off. The first device I got, I called the manufacturer; and they said they had never heard of anyone having this problem, and the device was probably defective and I should return it to H.D.. I did, and ordered another one, which also had caused the light it controls to blink on and off. I concluded it must be a problem with my system, not the device. I replaced it with a simple toggle on/off, and all works perfectly. I might try replacing it with a device which does not require a neutral. I did connect neutral as instructed for this device. Have others had this same problem??????

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install I replaced a mechanical timer unit with this unit. The accuracy has been good, easy to program as well as easy to install. Digital accuracy versus the mechanical plus or minus ten minutes was the driving force for my change.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Turns lights on/off I tried to purchase a better Intermatic timer from HD but when I was ready to put in cart it showed out of stock. I choose this model as a distant 2nd. It works fine but is made in China and the lack of quality shows. HD was nice enough to send me an e-mail stating, "Did you forget something?" with a listing and pic of the timer I wanted. Thanks HD, maybe you should check stock before poking your customer in the eye!!!
